Social media / networking is a major shift in the way we communicate with each other. This video on social networking is worth a look ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFZ0z5Fm-Ng )

I don't understand how people need to inform the world every time they use the restroom, however it can be fun to connect with old classmates and people you haven't seen for years who you know in RL.

I don't use Twitter. I think it's stupid and pointless, so I can't help you understand that. Maybe someone else can help both of us understand it.

I met my husband on MySpace back when it was still cool to go there. I had no clue why MySpace was interesting and so didn't do it for awhile. Then my friends bullied me into it and I liked it. I didn't intend to date anyone I met there, however my husband seemed to sweet and interesting, I decided to give it a shot. Look at us now- we're married and celebrating our 3rd anniversary in December.

Overall, as I said before, SN sites can be fun for touching base. It is kind of strange to me when people have a million friends who they've never met though. There's also a site, LinkedIn, that is for professional networking and actually leads to jobs and contracts. So it's not all bad. There's a good reason to use LinkedIn, even for people who hate social networking on other sites.

I'm likely not the most sociable person around (sparkpeople, school, and my few errands are about as sociable as I generally get), but I just can't bring myself to get into the facebook or twitter thing like everybody else seems to. Sparkpeople I understand because we're all here for a shared purpose; general SN sites I can't wrap my brain around.

Every day there's grumbling from students about not being able to get into their facebook pages or whatever, and the weird need to just go and constantly update the site, like what you're eating or what you're about to do.

I just don't quite get the big attraction to that, and the whole having oodles of friends you've never met or talked to ever that just click to your site. Granted, there's a smaller contingent of that on Sparkpeople, perhaps, but its on crack on those other sites. I mean, can you really consider somebody a friend if you've never talked to them and probably never will again? how can somebody have 10,000 friends? I just don't get it, is it really that good a thing?

I'm trying to understand the appeal. I don't internet date (skeptical and i'm old school about being friends and meeting people face to face first), I don't text (my calls are quite short) and i don't have social networking pages. I don't have anything to say, and from some pages and texts i've seen, they don't either (my students love trying to show me their pages when they find a way to get to them--its just pointless from the look of it).

One of these days, i might get a page, if i had it well thought out and set up to do things i wanted it to do (like for educational purposes and whatnot), but i might choose an alternative if I just can't wrap my mind around this obsession. help me out, please?
