From the SPARK PEOPLE motivational calendar...

"Take a breath, Slow deep breaths can help conquer stress and lower blood pressure. With your eyes closed, practice inhaling deeply into the belly and exhaling slowly. Try this several times throughout the day."

I have been recommending this for AGES... Here is a link on how to do it.. www.deepsloweasy.com/html/intro.htm

Enjoy - Stay well

Sorry Robin, I can't be of any help to you.
Enjoy your rides, and your walks and do the best you can until you find an answer.

I would love to get clarification on something.I went biking today on the same route that I usually walk. It's about 4 miles. It takes me about 50-55 minutes to walk it and the calculator says I burn about 400 calories. I know my heart rate gets to about 120-140 on the walk, depending on my "BPM" on my iPod songs that I keep paced with. On my bike ride today, I did the same route that my walk usually is, and I KNOW my heart rate was about 140-150. It took me about 25 minutes to do the route but the calculator says I only burned about 150 calories. It's strange because if I put 60 minutes for the same route on the bike it says over 300 calories burned. That doesn't make sense because I'd hardly be moving if I took that long. So I need clarification, and maybe some suggestions on a monitor to get and wear on my trips to make tracking my calories burned more accurate. (Right now I check my heart rate manually. So that is the only thing I am using to rate my level of cadiovascular activity. And the "map your route" on SP is the only thing I'm using to figure out my calories burned.)

Thanks in advance to ANYone who can help.
Robin :-)

FROM THE SPARK MOTIVATIONAL CALENDAR
MONDAY JANUARY 17 -
Wear a pedometer. This handy tool counts your steps and motivates you to get more active. Aim for at least 10,000 steps daily (thats about 5 miles) for good health, but INCREASE your steps gradually TO GET THERE.

My note: You cannot step out to 10,000 steps from 0.
Start slowly and build up. If you wear a pedometer, it will be easy for you to see how many steps you take without even trying... emoticon

CAN DO ATTITUDE - - - - HERE IS AN ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT OUR UPCOMING MEET UP WITH SACRAMENTO SPARKLES TEAM.
copied from MIMULUSBUG SPARK PAGE...

Tuesday, January 11, 2011
Winter in Sacramento is usually cold & wet and sometimes keeps some of us locals from getting out and walking. This month the SacSparkles team would like to meet-up at the Arden Fair Mall Monday Jan. 31st, at 6PM. Below is announcement we've posted on the SparkSacramento.com site and other local team sites.

-----------------------
Spark Sacramento: Fitness Walk - Even when its cold & wet!

Monday January 31, 6-8pm
Arden Fair Mall, Lower level entrance
Next to Sears adjacent to the parking garage
1689 Arden Way
Sacramento CA 95815

Join Spark People from around the Sacramento area for an informal 1 mile (2 loops) "Walk for Fitness & Life-Even when it's cold & wet" inside the Arden Fair Mall Monday January 31, at 6pm.

Please use the lower level entrance next to Sears adjacent to the parking garage. The SacSparkles team will have a small check in table set up near the "Inside Track Mall Walker" news & info display.

Folks living and working in the Sacramento area know how cold and wet our winters can be. So the Sacramento Sparkles team wanted to instigate an impromptu Spark Rally, or meet up, at the Arden Fair Mall to inspire people to get out and walk at the mall when the weather is cold and wet outside.

After the walk, we'll head up to the food court tables on the second level for refreshments and to hear how everyone is doing with their New Years resolutions and personal fitness goals.

Please send RSVP via "SparkMail" to: MIMULUSBUG, SMASHY1, & JAY75REY if you think you might be able to come, if you would like additional info about this event, or might be willing to help us with set up on the first level or with refreshments/water at the food court. An RSVP will also give us an idea of how many people to prepare for.

We look forward to meeting new Spark Friends!

From the SPARK MOTIVATIONAL CALENDAR

Say NO to negative goals. If your goals say don't, never or STOP, reward them. Focus on what you CAN do (like eat 3 fruits daily), not what you CAN'T DO. (eat sweets). You'll be more motivated and successful.

That is a wonderful tip!

Last year I used SP to log my food, however, I wasn't using it as much as I should have. However, this year I decided that I'm going to jot everything down in a little notebook that I am going to keep in my purse. Today is day 2 of using the food journal and I'm excited of what is yet to come!

DAY 6 from the SPARK PEOPLE Motivational Calendar:

Start a food diary.
Before you can improve your diet, you have to know where you stand.
Record EVERYTHING you eat and drink for five (5) days.
Then find small ways to improve your diet each day.

(I'm starting this RIGHT AWAY.)

Taken from THE BEST OF SPARK DAILY -

Stop Dieting and Start Living!
Have You Made the Change?

You've heard it so many times that you probably say it in your sleep. "Diets don't work; if you want to lose weight and keep it off, you have to make a lifestyle change."

But what does a lifestyle change look or feel like, and how do you know when you've made one? The way some people talk about it, you'd think there's some sort of mystical wisdom you get when you "make the change" that tells you when and what to eat, and how to stop worrying about the number on the scale. Does this mean you'll finally stop craving chocolate and start liking tofu?

The basic difference between a diet mentality and a lifestyle mentality is simply a matter of PERSPECTIVE. Having the right perspective may not make tofu taste better than chocolate, but it can make all the difference in the world when it comes to achieving your goals, avoiding unnecessary suffering along the way, and hanging onto your achievements over the long haul.

The new year is upon us and we are probably thinking that there are those 'resolutions' to contend with. Now is the time to firm up your plans for 2011................

First Steps to setting your intentions:

1. Get clear about something you want and write it down.

2. Share your intention with someone in a way that will supportively hold you accountable to taking action.

3. Do something today to demonstrate your commitment to your intention.

4. Acknowledge that you did what you said you would and then, take the next step.

By setting an intention, you make it clear to yourself and others, just what you plan to do.

Set an intention to redefine what it means to be serious about your dreams.
