Thanks!
Sounds like fun but definitely something to attempt with a friend if possible.

FRANCLYN said, "Is it at least clearly marked so you can do all that and rediscover the trail?"

The lower parts are pretty easy, though you need to be aware of the part from about the 4 mile-marker down to 0 and over towards Old Sac. Some scary people hang out there.

The top part is all well-marked, with the except of what happens when you cross over the dam. That's why I gave that detailed description-- on the "cliff" side, it's easy to stick to the trail until is peters out just below the Rainbow Bridge. On the Hiway 50 side, it's the beginning that's confusing (at the Aquatic Center Parking Lot, and then after you pick it up briefly there's that access road/shack part that's mysterious). From that point onward, the trail is marked all the way up to Rainbow Bridge.

I haven't been up there in awhile, but the fact that it ENDS at the Rainbow Bridge didn't used to be all that obvious. On the Hiway 50 side, you'd cross under the bridge, and there'd be a pink slash across the path (which I guess was "NO"), and then suddenly you're riding on the gravel...

Thanks so much for the post. . . .
ESPECIALLY FOR THE ALERT that some may not be aware of regarding the lower end of the pathway thru DISCOVERY PARK. emoticon

I ride the bikeway from Old Sac to the Sunrise bridge regularly - did so yesterday, in fact. I tend to stay on the main trial which switches sides of the river at Goethe Park, but is pretty easy to follow. I have taken the trail as far as Folsom Lake, but I am not sure how much further it continues beyond that point.
Be aware that riding the lower section, through Discovery Park, can be risky if you are riding alone at dawn or dusk. I recommend finding friends to ride with.
If there is interest in getting a group together for a meetup and ride, I would be happy to help get that going.

Is it at least clearly marked so you can do all that and rediscover the trail? I've only ever done the parts of the trail between Sac State and William Pond. I'd love to see the bit that goes to Old Sac.

Going up above the Dam is the tricky part. On Highway 50 side, you lose the trail in the parking lot, then move over to the right for awhile, and then the trail disappears and you bike onto an access road and turn left after a shack. (!) The rest is easier, though it would be better if people would stop walking/standing on the trail.

On the cliff side, it's pretty clear until nearly the very end when it sort of peters out in a parking lot.

I tried to do that as a loop a couple of times going up the highway side first, and while it's easier to pick up the trail at the top after crossing over the bridge, it still isn't very well marked. Mainly, you head downriver, and suddenly you see some cyclists over to the left and that's the trail again. :0

I had no idea that it went all the way to Old Sac. That means when I get really ambitious I can ride there all the way from home in Davis.

I haven't been that direction yet on the trail. I tend to ride it into Old Sac then take surface streets home. I'm looking forward to trying that direction, maybe with my husband! Thanks for the tip!

I did that last summer/fall when I wasn't in as good of shape and the ride back just about killed me. I'm hoping that I'm in better shape now.

I biked the AR Trail from Watt to the Folsom Dam. The trail was beautiful, although a little hard to follow on a couple of turns.

It was a good hard ride. I'm glad we went up hill on the way in. I'd hate to do that last hill at the end of the ride.
