For my independent study, I picked the topic and created a tentative syllabus with the books (books are better than articles) that I wanted to read. I meet with my advisor once every two weeks for about 2 hours and we discuss the books I have read. (Normally, that's 2-3 books every 2 weeks). Since he doesn't read them, the night before I write a 2-3 page paper outlining the main arguments of the books and more importantly, my reactions to the books' arguments and ideas. Though it is a pain, I have found that the more I read the better it goes when meeting one on one.

The best aspect is that I can change the syllabus whenever I want, letting me follow interesting topics that come up.

I'm taking an independent study now. Technically, it is an independent study that I got an incomplete in over the summer, that I need to finish up by the end of the semester so that I don't fail the course, but you get the idea.

I had a "contract" that I signed with my advisor, basically stipulating the work that I was supposed to accomplish over the semester. I've had to go back to my advisor because I need faculty sponsorship to submit an IRB application for my study, but otherwise, I have been on my own.

Probably bi-weekly check-in meetings would have been a better approach, but live and learn. I'll do it better for my dissertation.

...or something like that? i mean, i know each school and degree plan usually has something different as far as how they do it, but if you did have one, what did you do with it? i mean, how did teachers hold you accountable for what you did, or did you lay out your own timetable or whatever? how does this plan work out? i'm wondering if an idea i've got in my head for next spring might work out, but I need to know about this first.

any help would be great.
