yeah, you're right--"bullying" doesn't seem enough of a word or word part. what would be more accurate, though, especially since bullying is incredibly vague and what's going on seems to hit a pretty broad area? i've been thinking about this the past couple of days and can't quite come up with anything.

That's a good point about the name of the issue. I think too many people dismiss bullying as "kids being kids"

Sadly, there are some truly malicious people out there who take physical and verbal assault way beyond anything that "sticks and stones" could address.

This page offers a rundown of current laws, though they seem to be focused on schools: http://blogs.findlaw.com/law_and_life/2010

or-cyberbullying-laws.html
While this page refers to Canadian law, I suspect it is similar here in the US: http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/reso
urces/educational/teaching_backgrounde
rs/cyberbullying/cyberbullying_law2_h4.cfm

For cases where the person commits suicide, I would think it would be possible for the local law enforcement officials to bring charges of manslaughter, at the very least. Though, all things being political, that may be problematic.

In the recent case I would guess there are a number of different laws that can be applied. The problem with bullying is that the person who is being abused has to come forward first. If the victim doesn't, there is nothing the law can do.

I would also like to see the name changed, bullying does not have as serious a sense as the crime warrants.

Yet there was a man within me
Could have risen to the clouds,
Could have touched these winds,
Bent and broken them down,
Could have stood up sharply in the sky.

Amazing how i'd just finished a 4 hour workshop at the campus on understanding personal and other attitudes about diversity and how every person counts, every group counts--then I come home and see the news. HLN reported about a gay college student who killed himself because of crap posted on the internet about him, including video of him having sex, taken by his roommate through the webcam. I'd also read yesterday in a magazine about a young high school girl who did the same a few months ago, only it was because the girls were terrible to her and calling her names left and right, flinging comments out in facebook and twitter. They apparently thought she deserved it because she was dating boys that they thought she shouldn't be allowed to date.

How responsible should people be for the lives of others? how should they be held responsible for their deaths, or should they? Its amazing how much the issue is out there, then quickly buried. I don't know enough about the laws to know what should be done or can be in this issue, but i'm curious what is out there or what kinds of punishments can and should happen for people who cyberbully, cyberslander, whatever you can/will call it.

Any ideas or bits of knowledge you have would be wonderful to know. something needs to be done--what, though, is the hard part. its making me sick just thinking about it.
