I hit the gym first thing in the morning. It's been tough since I need to be on campus by 9 am a few times a week, but I'm also more alert and productive when I fit in activity early.

First thing in the morning for me as well.

I like the idea of walking around campus when you need a little mental break. I keep some small hand weights in my desk drawer. If I just can't stare at the computer screen anymore, I try to get up and so some bicep curls or wall push ups or lunges or something. Not the most rigorous of strength training routines, but better than nothing.

bluegrass - what a great idea! i'm going to have to incorporate that one into my routine!

for me, i have to do my "at home" work outs (right now i'm doing p90x) first thing in the morning. i think it's because i'm too bleary-eyed and brain-fogged to be distracted by how much other stuff i need to get done. if i'm going to do a class at the gym, it's generally easier for me to do it after work, as i have to drive by my gym on the way home!

Before this semester, I did it in the evenings as soon as I got home. I've learned that no matter how well intentioned I am, I won't get my butt out of bed to work out before school. To make sure I got it in, I would get home and immediately change into my workout clothes-if I sit on the couch the chances of me staying there are just too good...
Now, I am 14 days from submitting my dissertation. I didn't finish working last night until midnight. No way I'm going to work out then! So, I've found an alternative. It's not ideal, but it's something for the next few weeks. My school has a fairly small campus, and all the buildings are connected. I can walk around the school in about 15 minutes. So, any time I get stuck with my writing, I take a spin around the school. Often, just walking away from the keyboard for a few minutes will help me get past whatever I'm stuck on. In addition, with a few of these walks each day, I'm getting in a little activity at least!

Generally, early mornings before the day really begins. Though lately it has been after lunch.

Yet there was a man within me
Could have risen to the clouds,
Could have touched these winds,
Bent and broken them down,
Could have stood up sharply in the sky.
--Wallace Stevens

Just curious: how/when do the rest of you incorporate regular exercise into your daily schedules? What works best for you?
