I like the idea about the stability ball for a chair! I am just setting up my "study/exercise" room. I do not start classes until October 4th, until then I have some work to do as far as organizing my bills, workouts, and family time. I should add that this is my very first semester in grad school. Any advice people want to throw out there is appreciated.

Fall quarter starts for me at the end of this month. While I'm not quite looking forward to it, I will be glad to have access to a gym again!

I find it really hard to read on a treadmill or an elliptical. I guess just because your head is moving around a lot. I like to use the recumbent bike if I'm going to read and exercise at the same time. Your upper body is stationary (maybe not the best plan if you are keen on toning your upper body!) and I find I can absorb information and read okay.

Where I teach, 70% of the students are student athletes. I often tell my students specifically to read on the treadmill because they are kinesthetic learners and need to move to retain information.

I like audio books when I workout and often record my own of texts I need to read more than once. Reading and retaining info works for me with light cardio but if I'm working hard I don't retain the information.

I've actually never tried reading for academic purposes on the treadmill. I usually stick with my celeb gossip and such :) I don't know if I would be able to retain while working out?

do you guys actually grasp the concepts if you're doing both at once?

I wanted to try a treadmill desk - but I feel like I would also need a regular desk, because I'm just not that coordinated.

I am a huge fan of garbage reading and TV viewing at the gym (read: fashion magazines and reality TV). I've tried taking course reading a couple of times to the gym - but I'm not very coordinated for highlighting and notetaking and such. Instead, I tend to go for the stress reducing, fluffy stuff - because if I skip a paragraph on the latest Angelina scandal, I'm really no worse off.

I think the treadmill desk assumes I am far more coordinated than I actually am. I have tried using a stability ball instead of a chair. That seems to work pretty well since my abs actually get tired after a long day.

I just read an article about a treadmill desk, and now am kicking myself (half kidding) because I just bought an expensive desk. But, then again, I don't own a treadmill, so I guess it's not that big a deal.

What do you think? Is anyone actually doing this?

Also: I'm looking forward to loading tv shows I never get a chance to watch on my ipod, to watch while I workout at odd hours. I'm not the kind of person who's eyes are glued to the screen while watching a show, so this would work for me, especially for shows I'd like to catch up on, such as In Treatment.

I love both of those ideas, Girlbot. The two things I never have enough time for are reading and relaxing. I'll have to try doing both at the gym.

I am excited that this semester more of my time will be spent in a clinical practicum, and to accommodate that I am moving closer to my clinical site. The great part about this is that the new apartment is only a short distance away from a number of gym options. My plan is to bring my reading for the week to the gym, or to spend my evenings on the equipment there while I watch my favorite tv shows... Wish me luck!

Classes start for me tomorrow, at least the two online ones I am taking. Last, in person class begins next week.

I am excited/anxious as I usually am. It is going to be one busy semester, and to that I have added exercise and weight loss.

A busy life is a full life.

I'm in the dissertation-writing stage & I'm not teaching or grading or anything this year -- so this week is pretty much the same as last week! The only difference is that there are more people around, and there are all sorts of "welcome back" dinners and parties and lunches and the like. So in general I'm trying to be really careful about planning my days with respect to food. I do that anyway, but now I'm having to work in all the "extras" that pop up. I can't go to a department dinner and not eat, so I've been doing my best to work all these events into the plan. The same goes for the generous amounts of alcohol that seem to flow at most of these events as well. It's been a bit of a challenge, but so far it's been going pretty well. I hope the rest of you can say the same thing!

I'm *just* working on the dissertation, so I am suffering a bit from withdrawal.

Actually, since I work at a college but am not teaching this year, I'm participating in the madness. Our classes start Thursday, and I'm trying not to obsess about the technical stuff that is not done and probably won't be ready. No one will die from it, although it doesn't do to remind either faculty or students of this fact.

Good luck, all!!

The usual way - overwhelming panic coupled with lethargic apathy ;-)

Actually, I'm working hard on syllabi and trying to reorganize my workout schedule to fit the additional *three* sections my dean added to my load two weeks ago.

There is no rest for the wicked or for graduate students!

Classes start tomorrow for me... or possibly Tuesday, I'm still debating my schedule.

I could have sworn there was a break in between summer and fall classes - but for the life of me, I don't know where it went.

How are you guys getting ready?
