Hey all,

Just checking in. I turned in a first draft of my qualifying exam question. We work on a two semester process here, so I'm hoping that after I work with the committee my question gets approved. Then I can focus on writing and passing!

Has your motivation come back PRIESTESS? It's so hard to stay focused when real life gets in the way.

I'm hanging in there. Totally eating my stress, but working out to get my brain going in the morning. So far, my weight is staying the same. If I could stop the stress/late night eating, I'd probably be in great shape!

Hope you're all doing well!

Rosie-
Good luck on your qualifying exams! Remember to breathe. And congrats on staying on track even with the stress. I'm rooting for you!

Thanks so much for showing up and checking in with everyone. This was my bright idea, but I haven't been around much. Sorry folks!

I've lost a lot of my motivation for everything, except sleep. I blame it on financial stress. Things have taken a back seat to job hunting. But I've been working towards my thesis, and while not moving at the pace I'd like, chapters are getting written. I'm graduating this May come hell or high water! I'm adding the need to apply for internships to my to do list, as well.

As for my wellness plan- iffy. I have good days where I log my food and walk away from the Taco Bell near my train stop. Then I have the days where I pay no attention and eat junk all day. My exercise has consisted of taking the stairs and running for the bus. Or dancing in my chair at the office when nobody's looking (Fine Young Cannibals "She Drives Me Crazy" was playing. I couldn't resist). But I found a belly dance class really close to school, so I think that will help with fitness.

Good luck everyone!

How's everyone holding up?

I'm still doing well with my workouts. Helped that I was training for a 10K that was a week ago, so now the real challenge begins. My eating has been okay and I've stayed near the top of my range most days. Only a few major slip ups, but I've been losing weight so I'm still on track.

The stress is kicking into high gear now that I have a first draft of my qualifying exam question due in two weeks. I'm prepping frantically, and I'm hoping it's enough to get the go ahead to write next term.

Hope you are all well!

Unfortunately, my progress has been less than ideal. My roommates, though I love them, are still quibbling over what internet to get. Therefore, we have no internet. This makes logging my food tricky. I have not gotten my 15 min. in everyday, although I have been walking more.

As for school, I've been reading about 50 pages a day instead of 100, but I've doing my research and I did write my 5 pages for the week. So, not perfect, but not bad either!

Hey all,

Here's my progress from last week:
1) Work out 5x week - Made it! Also managed to squeeze in a long run and added mileage.

2) Stay in my calorie range at least 4x week
Still at the high end of the range, but was in there 4x

3) Prep for my qualifying exam 4 days/week
After reading my syllabi and looking at our research agenda for the term, I think this is more realistic to do 3x week. So far, I'm only reading or researching for the exam 2x week so any increase would be an improvement.

Hope you're all off to a good start!

I waited until I had syllabus in hand before forming my semester goals. So here we go. . .

School Goals

Read 100 pgs./day
Research 1 hr./day
Write 5 pgs./week

Fitness Goals

Plan and track my food every night for the following day
Exercise 15 min./day

Good luck everybody!

I'm in too -

1. workout 60 min, 5x per wk (m-f, the wkends are bonus)
2. stay within calorie range

That sounds so easy, doesn't it? :)

Rosie - I have to study for a test that's on Oct. 3 - I probably should add that as a goal for myself too!!!!! ..Since I haven't even started yet. boo.

After the first week of classes, here is my progress

1) Work out 5x week

2) Stay in my calorie range at least 4x week
Made it! But was at the high end of my range each week.

3) Prep for my qualifying exam 4 days/week
I did this twice this week. Now that I have my class schedule settled, I think it's going to be easier to carve out days to read.

I want to ACTUALLY wake up at 6am every weekday and get in a 45 minute workout. I will excuse myself on test days, only to make up for it with an afternoon workout. On the weekends, I want to do my 7:30am workouts.

...taking it one day at a time!

Orientation today, class tomorrow. My goal is to keep going to the gym 3-4 times per week even when it gets busy with exams/papers. I want to remind myself that I feel LESS stressed after I exercise a little. Goodluck this semester, everyone! emoticon

Ladies and Gentleman,

It's about that time again. It's almost September. The new Fall semester/quarter is looming in anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Perhaps you are excited. Perhaps you are nervous. Perhaps your summer was so busy you didn't even notice. But for all of us it is that time of year when we must once again find a way to blend classes and homework with health and fitness. So I'm inviting anybody who wishes to join me in a Semester Start Challenge. This is an opportunity to think about your goals for both school and health.

Here's how it works: Pick a goal (or several) and state it boldly. Could be # of pages written per week or doing 15 min. of cardio every morning or simply tracking your food every day. Then, come check-in and say how you're doing. Exceed your goal? That's great, and there'll be other people here to say Yay! with you. Fall behind, there will be people here to commiserate and encourage you to get right back to it.

I've been in several of these challenges in my slightly-longer-than-it-should-have-been graduate career, and they're a great way to start the semester and you'll be surprised how motivated you'll feel.

So, go ahead and tell us your goals and have a great Fall Semester!
