How are people doing? I'm turning in a huge qualitative research project today, which will be a relief. After that's it's just one last big paper and work for my research team and I can finally enjoy the break!

It's funny, this semester I'm making sure I work out so I'm not feeling all that panicked. Unfortunately, it hasn't changed my desire to eat just about everything in sight.

Hope people are hanging in there!

MRSBISON- I feel for you and your chapter deadline. My thesis (the whole thing) is due at the end of January, and major holiday travel and a friends wedding in between. As Dory says, "Just keep swimming"

Yippee! I finished writing the first chapter of my dissertation! It's *way* too long and will need a lot of revising. My advisor honored my achievement by saying that the next chapter shouldn't take me this long to write... I have a deadline for mid-January, which is... well... insane, since there's this holiday coming up and I'll be with my in-laws for three weeks! So, that's driving me a bit crazy. Mid-January... that's six weeks! For a chapter? Mmm...

Anyway... I'm glad I found this group of grad students! Happy typing, reading, grading, researching, computing...

UGH! What a stressful assignment PRIESTESS. At least you'll have an extra reason to be thankful once you turn your chapter in. Good luck!

Hey all,

Thought I'd check in since I haven't posted in a while. Things have been tough between traveling for conferences, research, and classes, but I'm hanging in there. The end of the semester is getting closer and I'm trying not to completely freak out. Hopefully, I can get motivated to finish strong! Trying to make some time to work out to clear my head as well. It's getting harder to do, but I know I'll feel better if I work out. The toughest part is not snacking while I read and write. It's the death of me!

Suzanne,
You've come to right place. School is stressful, and I also have a career I could just walk into if I wasn't going to school full-time. It's enough to drive anyone up a wall. I've found that taking time to vent and to set-up mini-goals for a week or a day does a lot to soothe the crazy. There's a phrase I repeat to myself daily: "Just for today, I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision."
Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving.

So I am sitting here at work and thinking how school is driving me crazy. So I thought I'd peak on over at my fellow grad students team and found some people that feel the same way... in a forum no less!! So... I'm not alone. I have to say.. the fact that I have my RN sometimes makes me just want to run away and simply work... that's it... I am so tired of working and going to school full time... But I am just about halfway done with school... This year is definitely harder than last year and I can feel it in my body. I need to take it one day at a time... something that is hard for me to do..I need to be better with sweets and snacking. Somehow I need to get motivated. I think my sleep deprivation (from working the night shift) is causing some depression and preventing me from being more active. May 2010 cannot come soon enough!! Sorry to ramble!!! Hope everybody has a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

Priestess-
As crappy as the need for a job is at least you need it at the right time. Even in tough economic times people are still very willing to pay someone to help keep their own stress level down. If you can shop, run errands, wrap presents, babysit while moms do these things... you're golden. A few fliers, a post on craigslist and a few mom-centric boards advertising ''Feed the hungry college student" should get you some biz. While you're getting that rolling, in the meantime lots of cafe's/retail need flexible hour help.

1st Major Goal: To be under 200lbs (I DID IT!!)
2nd Major Goal: To be a size 14 (I DID IT!!)
3rd Major Goal: To have lost 35 pounds (I DID IT!!!)
4th Major Goal: 185 (Gotta do it again)
5th Major Goal: To actually be 180 (what it says on my license)

Hey All,
I'm definitely feeling the November stress, although for different reasons. Most of my stuff is due in December, so while November is definitely a hunker down and get to work time so I'm not scrambling in December, I'm not losing my mind in work. Actually, I have the opposite problem. I'm losing my mind because of lack of work. Grants and loans only go so far, and if I don't find a job soon then I am going to be broke, possibly too broke to pay rent in December. I'm keeping the panic down (it's only the 4th, lots of November left), but I need a job. Soon.

Hey, guys.
I'm with you...struggling with the month of November as well.
I'm glad I have this forum with you guys where we can vent and encourage one another. I'm only going to one conference, thank God! It'll be amazing, but there's a lot of work before I get there.

Hey Rosie,

It sounds like my schedule is just like yours for the month of November. Everything major is due pretty much before Thanksgiving and I've got 3 conferences to attend too. My goal is to work on something everything day and try to get things done before the deadline so I'm not sweating right up until the last minute.

We can do it!

Hey all,
I felt good last week about where I stood, but I just got really sick. It's making reading and writing a miserable process. The bummer is that I was just starting to feel good working out again and now I know I have to rest.

As for school, I see everything that needs to get done in the month of November and I'm completely overwhelmed about everything I need to get done. It doesn't seem like there's enough hours in the day, but I'm going to do my best.

I'm not sure that I am keeping it to a manageable level. I'm so overwhelmed. I have been making fairly good nutrition choices, but definitely don't have my exercise where it should be this week. I haven't been able to get done even half of what I had planned!

Hey! How is everybody doing this week? Staying sane? Or least keeping the crazy to a manageable level?

I have a chapter of my thesis due today, and I'm actually feeling okay about it. It's not as long as it should be, but what I do have is good, solid writing. I'm spending the rest of today (when I'm not in class) putting some finishing touches on it. It's a little rushed. I swear, where does the time go? I had all this time, how is all my stuff still not done? There's always an answer when I look back. Sometimes it went because I procrastinate like a fiend. Sometimes it went because I chose something else as more important (like spending the day being a girlfriend and not a grad student). And sometimes it went with the unavoidables, like getting stuck on the train for an extra 20 min. But hey, after I turn in this chapter, I've got another 2 weeks to write the next one, and I can improve upon my time management and get the other one done with a little less last-minuteness.

On the up-side, I did make good time management choices with regards to health and weight loss. I've been exercising (learning belly dance- great fun and really gets me out of my head) and planning and tracking my food. I'm almost looking forward to my weekly weigh in next Sunday.

So I guess my current goals are to keep up the good work in health and fitness, and to manage my time better so I can get this next chapter written, as well as maintaining all the other constant school work (Heaven! I miss the days when I only had 100pgs. of reading per class).

Where's everybody else at this week?

JKLEISS,

I have been avoiding SP for a few weeks but think of you and your efforts all the time. This idea of getting some reading and writing done matches mine so much. There never seems to be enough time and other people and things get in the way - like visiting a parent and your children who live 100 miles away. I think I will steal your goals, if you don't mind, as my own for the next few weeks. emoticon

I love the goals that everyone is posting. That's inspiring me to set one of my own. Ok, I want to get one paper finished for a class (almost there just keep doing other things instead) and get started on another paper for a different course. I've got some articles read, just need to start typing it up!

It's reading week, and I have a great deal to get done while I don't have class, but because I don't have class, my brain is in vacation mode. So I'm setting some strict goals to keep me on track. I've already planned my food for the week, and with a really unstructured schedule, it's easy to plan for a half hour to 45 min. of exercise. Now I just have to crack down on work.
My plan for the week: internship application, 15 pages of thesis writing, two chapters of thesis research.
I also think I'll take this week to clean my house. Sadly, it's gotten a little neglected :(

Hi, I'm late to join in this thread as well, but I can definitely relate to what everyone is talking about. Actually, Redsinner, I'm also in the midst of grading (just over 70 papers), and just taking a little breather from that right now.

The big challenge for me these days has been my fitness habits-- I'm about 5 1/2 months pregnant so I know that is just one more reason why I need to keep up with my great summer workout routine! I'm doing fine with stretching, but the other areas (cardio and ST) are definitely lagging behind what I had been doing.

So... how do you convince yourself to go work out, when you have to set priorities with school and teaching as it is, let alone getting outside or to the gym?

Dee

Hi everyone,
Yep, I'd love to join the conversation, too. I started taking a spin class at 7am on tuesdays and thursdays, and it's kicked me into a nice morning exercise routine - I've never been a morning exerciser before. Disappointing that the weight isn't budging after 2 weeks, but I'm feeling better about myself. Unfortunately, I DO have less time - exercising every day does take time.

I'm not feeling the groove today - been avoiding work for 1.5 hours now. I like your idea, goofballgrl, of having a goal for the week. I know it may appear ambitious, but I also think it's reasonable. Here's my goal for the rest of this week (Tues - Sat)
1. exercise every morning for 30 minutes.
2. spend ~ 3 hours reading and/or writing.
3. spend ~ 3 hours working on my data

OK. I'll check back in later with progress on these goals...

Be gentle, kind, and loving to yourself.

Hey guys-
I would have loved to join this discussion earlier... but I've been buried under 55 essays and 60 tests that all need grading. I think this support is fantastic. I know everyone is slammed but I hope you all can take a little time for yourselves this weekend!

Hey all,

Just checking in. I've had an okay week working out, but am not doing so great with my eating. Definitely stress eating at night while I read and write, but I haven't see my weight shift.

I have a big paper due tomorrow, so it's going to be a day full of writing!

I'd be delighted for some sanity buddies. My goal this week is to do the research for the next chapter of my thesis. Likewise, I'd like my thesis to NOT help me gain weight, again. Up 3lbs., mostly stress induced eating.

I think that this would be good for all of us. I would like it, as well.
I need to be writing my dissertation proposal. My goal for this week is to do at least an hour of research on this a day this week.

That sounds good to me. I'm working on my dissertation proposal and it has been dragging. I am hoping to finish the latest draft today, except for the methods section. Then, hopefully I can test some of the data this weekend so that I can talk to my advisor about what my model should look like.

Let's just keep trucking along, and remember what our long term goals are for school and life.

Would you ladies be interested in keeping up this conversation for the rest of the semester? If I talk to other people, I tend to be more honest about my areas of success and failure.

I know what you mean Rosie and I agree with your one day at a time idea. There's so much to worry about it's very easy to get overwhelmed. I'm just glad I have people I can turn to to vent and then get back on track. We can do this!

It's been nice to read this thread. I've also been feeling really overwhelmed and haven't been as good with diet/exercise lately. I'm still doing coursework in my doctoral program, but am definitely feeling the pressure to publish, present at conferences, and think about a research agenda that will help be begin a faculty career. Sometimes it feels like it's just so much that it almost distracts me from enjoying the opportunity to learn. I'm just trying to take it on day at a time.

It is really tough. I know it helps me to have someone to talk to about things. I'm starting to realize how important it is to have good relationships with others that support me in my goals.
I'm trying to turn over a new leaf by getting out my slow-cooker, so I don't have excuses that I don't have time to cook, etc.
I hope that your day is going well.

It's good to know I'm not alone in this mess! I just needed to vent some of my frustration/worry to someone who understands everything you have to do to be successful in grad school.

Yeah, this is the semester I'm supposed to start working on my dissertation, and I haven't done a lot yet. I don't graduate for a while, but I'm committing to spend the next 2 years of my life on this project!!!
It's scaring me I think, too.

I feel for you both. I'm suffering from the same apathy. I think I'm panicking about writing my masters thesis, and finally graduation and getting on with my life. I'm scared, so I procrastinate. It's not healthy. Something in my thinking needs to shift, and soon!

I don't know about suffering, but I've been having a really hard time this semester. I'm having trouble getting my schoolwork done, and I haven't been paying attention to my eating and exercise lately either. I've not been doing homework or getting stuff done on my dissertation...my overall apathy is somewhat apalling to me and I really need to get out of it.
I'm definitely going crazy!

Hey Everyone,

Well there hasn't been much activity on our board and I'm guessing it's because everyone is swamped or feeling overwhelmed like I am. It's definitely creeping closer to midterms! It's at this point in the semester I question whether this is worth all the work, but then I remember my goals and just suffer through it. Just wanted to see if anyone else was "suffering" too!
