I'm in my third year of the actual dissertation phase of my doctorate, which I'm doing in health psychology. I expect to hand in my dissertation by April or May next year (keeping my fingers crossed!). My thesis is about body image, using qualitative methods. I've finished data collection, and have written most of the opening chapters of my thesis.

My summer goals are (even though it is winter here!):
By August 31
*Finish data analysis
*Finish the first "findings" chapter for my thesis (of an expected 4 chapters of findings)
*Be down to 76 kg
*Go to the gym for at least 45 minutes, 4x a week
*Stay in my calorie range at least 6x a week
*Bring down my overall sodium intake! Under 2300 mg 4x a week.

This is a great idea!!

I am in my 5th year of an Industrial-Organizational Psychology program. It is the psychology of the workplace. When I finish, I will be teaching in a Business School. Basically, my research deals with diversity and discrimination issues in the workplace. I have conducted research on a variety of marginalized/stigmatized groups (e.g., obese individuals, pregnant women, gay men and lesbian women). My dissertation is an extends my earlier work, but really looks at gender issues in the workplace. I have already proposed my dissertation and I am hoping to tighten up my methodology and collect some data over the summer. That along with working on about four other studies!!!

I've been going to the gym daily, but for the last few days the scale has been stuck!

Well I was in NY from Thursday to Sunday. I did not workout, but we walked all over that city so I got some sort of workout. I am proud to say that I stayed within my calorie range with the exception of Saturday night when we ate at Tony Dinapoli's where they serve family style Italian food,(it was soooo good) but I am proud to report that when I got back to the hotel that night I got on the treadmill emoticon .

Sorry for being confusing. :-) I am studying the extinction of the woolly mammoth by serially sampling from tusk samples to determine paleovegetation and paleoclimate.

I am finishing my 3rd year and really need to kick my butt in gear after a very emotionally challenging last 6 months.

I am glad to see some more people putting their goals up for everyone to see.

Synchroswimr's post had me confused (tusks?!!) until I remembered that everyone doesn;t study the same thing I do.

I know there is another post asking what our majors are, but I thought maybe here we could post a little more in depth, to get to know each other and better understand each other's academic goals for the summer.

I'll start:

I am in my second year working on a PhD in Marketing. Although it sounds businessy (and is in the business school), I study Consumer Behavior, which is closer to psychology than business. Specifically, I research how people use the products they buy to express who they are (their personalities), and how people make inferences about other people based on what they consume.

This summer, I am working on my Conceptual Paper (our form of Quals) where we have to summarize the extant literature in our little niche of the field and then try to propose studies that would fill the gaps or address conflicts in the literature. FUN!!

How about you guys!! I want to hear about those tusks!

Since the 14th I've done well staying in my calorie range - only two out of 7 days I went over, and one of the days I went over it was only by about 10 calories.

Still doing good with the water and exercise. It's hard to keep increasing my running time since I'm trying to also walk a lot of miles as preparation for a 3 day 60 mile walk I'm doing in August to benefit breast cancer. That takes up a lot of my workout time although I try to get variation in.

I will join you! I will do a combination of your suggestions and add some of my own.

My goals:
Cardio 1 hour, 5 days per week
Strength train 2 days per week

I would love to be out of the 190s by the end of summer.

Current weight: well... unknown. 2 weeks ago, I was at 191.6. This morning I was at 199, but my new pants (down a size since December) fit fine with extra room in the waist. *shrug*

School Goals:
Finish the two tusks I have in hand
Write one chapter (extinctions)

My reward if I make it? A new stability ball. :-)

I'm interested! Although I haven't actually STARTED grad school yet.. but it will help me reach my goals and lose weight so when I do start I will be close to or at my goal weight!

I have orientation on August 20th and my first day of class on August 25th.

SW: 137.5 lbs.
GW: between 120-125 lbs. by Aug 19

I weigh myself once a week on Tuesdays. I've been doing really well with sticking to this and it helps me to not let the scale affect my mood.

It's exciting for me to think I could possibly reach 120 by August 19 although I think it'd be a stretch.

My goals:
1. Stay in my calorie range most of the time, but it's okay if I go over a bit just once a week.
2. Keep getting 8 cups of water everyday - I'm doing better with this now but it's still good to make a conscious effort.
3. Work out at least 60 minutes a day 5 times a week
4. Continue to increase my running time to a length of one hour (currently up to 41 minutes).

I'm interested!!!! This summer I will be working on my dissertation. There is some tweaking that I have to do with my methodology. I've also got to rewrite some of the first three chapters based upon feedback at my proposal defense. That way, I won't have to worry about it in the fall!!!

Here's my plan:

Cardio: 60 minutes everyday
Diet: Stay within range
Strength Training: start strength training (3 days a week) once I break 159 (July 2)

SW: 173
GW: 147 (August 13)

Well, I guess there may not be much interest, but I will post my starting point and goals anyway.

Right now, I weigh in every friday, and I tend to fall off the wagon on Friday and Saturday. So, my goals follow from that bad habit:

SW: (05/9) 265.2
GW: (08/22) 229.0

Cardio: At least 45 minutes, 5 days per week
Diet: Stay within calorie range 6 days per week, do not go over by more than 500 calories on 7th day.

Hello,

About goals: I was thinking maybe staying within calorie ranges 6/7 days, or getting in 30 minutes of cardio 5/7 days, or, more ambitiously, some sort of informal contest to see who can lose the greatest % of body weight during the challenge period (a la Biggest Loser).

I was "competing" with my roommate, but she has sort of fallen off the bandwagon lately, so I was looking for some new competition until she starts up again.

I like to join challenges. Which kinds did you have in mind?
You could have the team leader set some team goals we could try to meet.

I am overly busy this summer. I have one class, a summer internship, a job and my daughter's wedding so it isn't slow for me, but still interested

I think that would be great! I know in the past we have done challenges where each person sets their own goals and we just post how we are doing... what would you guys think of that?

Hey guys,

I don't know if your grad school experience is the same as mine, but things slow down a little bit in the summer because subject pools are smaller, I don't take any formal classes, etc. To keep up the motivation, and not give in to the lazy days, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in starting a challenge to last the summer semester and end when Fall semester begins.

We could do an individual challenge or group teams based on major or college or type of program, etc.

Even if we can't get a large group, we could have a small group of similar individuals to be accountable to/share successes with......let me know!
