Hello! I am new to both Spark and quilting, and I thought I'd poke my head in to say "hi!"

I started my first quilt about a month ago in response to needing to find a hobby. The last couple of years my time had been pretty full with working and finding a job. Praise God, I have a job with my degree as of a year ago :) and have found myself with extra time and decided that quilting would be wonderful to do.

My first project is a rail fence quilt. I started with a star pattern but then realized I needed to do something much simpler! :) I had 6 blues picked out for the star, and settled on 4 for the rail fence, and it is turning out great – I finished the first block two nights ago and I am *very* excited. My husband of six weeks and I moved into our house a couple of weeks ago, and painted the master bedroom a very light shade of blue (very refreshing!) so the quilt will go wonderfully on our bed. I’m thinking about bringing the other 2 blues in as boarders depending on how I frame up the blocks… it’s exciting to think of all the possibilities for the quilt.

We just bought a sewing machine so the next blocks are coming much more quickly. :)

Nice to meet you!

Hi Pam and Diane --

Thanks for the warm welcome! The unfinished project I am currently trying to finish is a block of the month quilt I got through my local quilt shop -- The Little Shop. It was a dozen different really complicated (for me) star blocks in red, white, blue, and gold. I am going to give it to my stepson and his wife for a sofa quilt. He is in the US Coast Guard and they like patriotic things.

Two more borders, then the quilting, and then binding. Maybe I'll finish by the end of the summer..... Finishing is a new thing for me. I tend to quit when the project gets to an ugly stage.
I'm learning to work through this part and I am usually rewarded with something beautiful in the end.

I am going to take this same attitude toward eating right, exercise, and losing weight.

Have a good day. I read earlier that someone was weeding in the rain because it was easier. I'm going outside to give it a try.

Pamala,

Every month they give you a different block pattern in 12 months they will show you how to put them all together. Block is 8 inches square when done. Its fun 3 time I have done this. Different blankets when all done.Enjoy. Beautiful day in Ohio today.

Hi, Folks!

Can I join in? I am celebrating the end of my first month with Sparks. I've lost 18 pounds, and now I have so much more energy to quilt! Even if I weren't losing weight, the dramatic difference in the way I feel would make "healthy living" all worth it.

I am completely in love with quilting -- and my new goal is to finish some of the many unfinished projects I've already started. I've managed to finish 5 UFO's since February -- only another bazillion to go!

Happy Quilting & Sparking,

TeaBird

Hi Pam,
Block swaps are fun. A group of people will make blocks for everyone else's quilt. The blocks can have a theme, or size requirement. I have Spring 12" blocks that had a color scheme and Christmas blocks that are 6" and no requirement other then Christmas and size. These where online swaps. I had to make 12 blocks, send them to the organizer and she would send you 12 blocks from 12 other people.

Curly-welcome to the group and sounds like you have a plan going their-what is a block swap? I've only been quilting for around 6 months and have two tops that are almost done and one that I just need to finish putting together about four that I want to down and a block of the month that I need to do two blocks to be caught back up. Hi my name is Chris and found sparkpeople a month ago. What a great website, I am down 12lbs and it does not feel like a diet. This is the first time I feel like I can do it.
I was so excited to find this board. I just picked up my quilting after not touching it for a while. I am currently finishing a table runner and a stain glass wall hanging. I have a quilt for my daugher that was supposed to be finished last year, that I will start working on tonight. It just needs to be quilted. I have enough completed squares for 4 quilts, all from block swaps. My qoal for this summer is to get at least 2 of them done. No quilting them, I think I will just tie them.

QUESTION?

Frist time using THANGLES when you use two materials and cut them and iron so you have half and half together. The plain blocks are much longer and the row comes out to large when I put the 5 blocks together. When 5 blocks are joined and the five rows joined the pattern is way off??? Every happened to any one else? I will take it to class but one whole block I have to do agin and I do not know how to correct it. Thanks for listening.

I have been working in my garden alot and terracing the rows between my grapevines and berry rows with rock walls. I collect the rock from the hill above my garden. While lifting rocks we (my sister and I) found a scorpion, gopher snake, blue tailed skink, alligator lizard, potatoe bugs, and wasps. Quite an exciting day. Then on our walk to the lake and around just after crossing the highway we saw a mother mallard and 4 tiny babies following her all lined up in a row heading for the lake too. So we herded them all the way to the lake. It was amazing how such little ones could trek the steep, rough, slopes of some of the areas. When they got to the water they all drank in quite a lot after their long, hot, dry walk. It was such a nice day for nature observation! Yesterday I heard a flopping noise in the grass about 2 feet away from where I was walking by on the road so I stopped to look. It was a red tailed hawk which then flew up into a tree with a large gopher hanging from his talons. It was awesome to be that close to it. When I'm outside alot it helps me to completely forget about food.

no progress at weigh in this week, actually went back eight tenths to 210, but I am probably retaining water. I did get out dancing Saturday Night, and my feet still hurt emoticon

The Quilts for Kids group that met on Saturday sandwiched and tied four quilts for kids. A good day, except it looks like we have lost one member. I don't know how I am going to break it to the other longstanding members of the group, but lives and priorities change :-/

Hugs -- Edith Started at 220, made goal 160 now I have to get there again :-)

Keep Dancing. Joy is the best exercise.

Thanks for the encouraging words. We can all do it. I ran this morning 5 miles and then pulled weeds for 5 hours in the rain until I was shivering cold. Then took a hot shower and went out to dinner with my husband. The weeding is so easy with the ground wet but I have 230 acres and my garden area is so in need of work. It will take me days and days before all the weeding is done but I really made progress this last week and today. I love outdoor work. Housework can always wait. (I hire it out) But weeding is great exercise. I'm sewing some curtains and a comforter cover for a girlfriend and hopefully will get in some handwork on my quilt this evening.

I did it this week and lost my pounds 147!!
It is good that I'm enjoying the process because it sure is a lifestyle and not a quick fix. I think I enjoy getting closer to being my ideal weight. I feel great now. Still have 20 more pounds to go.

Hi All,

My Linus Project quilting group meets tomorrow (3rd Saturday) to sandwich quilts. We use a large conference room at my workplace in the San Francisco Bay Area. If you want to be involved, my home email is edith_maverick at yahoo dot com.

I do find I don't eat all that much on these quilting days because I get absorbed in the work :)

Happy quilting!

I finally dropped the next pound, 148 today. I had to go to 1200 calories for 2 days and quit cheating on my calorie count allowance to make the scale change.
My husband was funny when I was stuck at 149. He seriously asked me "Are you sure you didn't make a number mistake?" The day I ate 1500 extra calories I didn't want to talk about. I finally admitted it and determined I wasn't going to be able to faux anyone or myself out on this one. Either I'm in or I'm out when it comes to being committed to getting to my ideal weight and be on a healthy lifestyle program. No cheating is worth the stagnet feeling!
We must be accountable to ourselves. It is awful to have someone else try to help us be accountable but it is sometimes necessary to make us realize we are fooling no one. Our choices SHOW loud and clear.

Quilt Post cards sound fun. Also tying quilts is nice too! I also like your trade off in time. That way there is not too much sitting in one place too long. Way to go all you quilters. I'm going to work on mine for a while now.

The quilts my group makes are traditional, but quick, because we tie rather than stitch the top to the bottom. A couple of the ladies, who do more intricate quilting as well, find this quick quilting a refreshing change of pace.

If you go to sewing/quilting shows, you can get special feet and gadgets to make machine quilting more convenient. And looking through the shows can add a lot of walking, but bring an apple or something to combat the temptation of the faire food there :)

Do any of you do... non-traditional quilting? I mean, not making quilts or wall-hangings but quilted things nonetheless?

I got distracted from my tablerunner (which is STILL giving me problems) in favour of making fabric postcards. I like these little bite-size projects, though I'm not so hot with the machine applique.

I've been making myself split time between quilting and treadmilling - half an hour of one in exchange for half an hour of the other.

Short term ticker (less daunting than long term ticker):

Hi All!

I just do simple quilts for kids, but I have fun at it. Working at the sewing machine can get taxing on the shoulders and posture though.

BTW, when did the needle eye get so small anyway? emoticon emoticon

great to see there is a message board here for quilters. I've been quilting for about 7 or 8 years and I love it. A fantastic creative outlet. Right now I am working on finishing up a quilt that I have lost the love for, but I want to finish before I start something new. All the blocks are done and partially stitiched together. I hope it doesn't take too long because other projects are calling my name.

Yes! I'm for drinking water! It is usually my only beverage! I easily drink more than 8 glasses every day. I start my day off first thing with 4 cups of very warm water which I learned at a health lecture once about re-hydrating when you wake up. Plus your body retains water is if thinks you won't get enough and you get puffy ankle. YUCK! It is so important. We can all take your challenge and benefit by increasing our water intake.

Good idea. Do a few stretches also to keep you limber. The tablerunner is a challenging pattern but well worth the effort. Keep plugging along.

I've finished my am walk and exercise program and getting ready to reward myself - lol, I get to go into my sewing room.

My challenge today for you gals is to drink 8 glasses of water. I've consumed 40 oz so far and am on my 5th glass of water. Keep with the Spark!

Take exercise breaks often, even if just to do some leg abduction circles etc. You'll be surprise how good it feels. Set a timer and every hour stand up and do a little bit "just for your health"

I've been working today on sewing together a tablerunner with a double wedding ring pattern. It's driving me crazy! I can't get some of my points to match up and... I think I need a punching bag to work out some frustration. Hm. Would be some good exercise after sitting on my bum for so long today...

Your quilting guild classes sound so much fun! Wish I could quilt all the time. I'm down another pound 149 today. Spark people is the best! Healthy lifestyle is the key. I started phase 3 today. Had a water aerobic class for an hour and ran 3.5 miles. Will walk tonight with my sister another 3 miles.

Good morning,
Just finished the one mile Walk Away The Pounds with Leslie Sansone. I have several different exercise videos from beginning to challenging. How is it going with your exercise program? What are you doing?

I attended a quilt guild meeting yesterday where there were several mini workshops offered. One demonstration showed different methods of making triangles; another demo on easy no-bias flying geese; then English paper piecing method for making hexagons for grandmother's flower garden, paper pieced triangles for tumbling blocks, mini dresden plates etc. I'm always looking for easy piecing ideas for community quilts.

Get with the Spark!

It's been a few days. The weather has been so warm and sunny. I've been out doing yard work instead of quilting. I have gotten to 150 pounds. I have stayed with the tracking and planning and exercise and just love the results. I'm into size 10 now! Going to continue and lose another 20+

Good morning,
I just finished my morning walk and will have a cup of tea ... green tea. I've been trying not to drink so much coffee all the time. I also hope to get some quilting in today. I'm working on the pinwheels and posies and am getting ready to sew the rows together and begin the borders.

What's everyone up to? Keep on with the Sparks!

Good to hear from you quilters. Always something of interest to learn what others are up too. I'm hoping to get my exercise in first thing today, my sister is coming over to do our walk around the lake (3 miles) Then quilting would be nice!!!! Hope you all have a wonderful day tracking and streaking. I have not missed a day since I started on March 17. It is so worth it. I'm 25 pounds less than my highest weight. Getting to my ideal by summer!! I feel so much better!

Just stopped in to say hello to fellow quilters. I've just completed a stained glass sunflower wallhanging and am working on pinwheels and posies started in a workshop class last month.
Spark's hobbies are walking daily, riding my bicycle, and seeing how I can get out of exercising LOL. I usually exercise to videos ... favorite is called The Firm Maximum Body Shaping with Tracie Long.

I see we've got a proper group now! This is nice :D

I've been working today on putting a blanket stitch around the rings on a double wedding ring table runner that I'm struggling madly to finish before Mother's Day (it's going to be a gift). I wish there was some way I could manage stitching while on the treadmill :D

Wow! nice to have someone who got us in the right spot! Quilting is my passion. Fitness and my ideal weight are my goals so I can quilt way into the next 50 years. Must stay active and on my streak and fit in quilting as a secondary activity. I have 20 + quilts started and it is my goal this year to finish a bunch of them and not start more until I do. I always want to start every quilt I see.
