We have WATER! Under mandatory restrictions, but flowing from the tap and supposedly potable! Not that we are drinking it yet! DH shared his experience today -- he showered. I mean he TOLD us of his experience regarding taking a shower today. Unfortunately, he forgot that our water heater is gas-powered -- and we don't have gas restored yet. It ended up being a super-short, way-too-cold shower. I showered also -- but I did it at the gym after exercise -- TWO good things for me today!

Low cal day 2 which brought me back to my base weight.

Delighted to be back to baseline after the lovely celebrations I have had over the last couple of weeks.

I meditated
I walked 600 steps

Looked on the map today. I was not sure where Boulder was. Now I have it in my mind's eye. News reports seem to differ as to whether lives have been lost? One I read says hundreds are unaccounted for, and another report says 1 dead, 3 missing. I guess we don't get an accurate picture of what is really going on.... or maybe it is just too difficult to tell from outside.
So pleased you have power Koshie and can let us know how you are going. Hoping things will come back to some semblance of normality before long.

Today I ate low cal 870
I walked 300 so far and am going to do another 300 right about now
I am going to meditate after that

Koshi you should write a book.
When you were describing it, the old Jack Nicholson's movie popped into my head, that scary one from years back. The abandonment and isolation would be terrible. My gosh they must have been terrified. I often wonder how the early pioneers ever did it. Tough folks and determined.

Hopefully will get back here to share over the week end, it helps me to stay on track. I best be trying real hard then eh?

Koshie all I can say after reading that is WOW! We are still praying for you and those in CO suffering. I saw last night a precious father's car was swept away, it took several days to find him. He was not alive. We cried. It hurts to see people so far away suffer. Thank goodness we can at least donate.

You asked ---- no... nobody here ever talked about flood preparedness. Most people here don't have flood insurance either. Too much water? Ha! Before these last 10 days, we (all of Colorado) were in a VERY bad way for lack of water. Colorado has suffered through a drought for the last 20 years.
I did learn about flash floods in canyons: If you get warned in time, don't try to out-drive it -- get out of the car immediately and CLIMB as fast as you can! But as soon as the water is out of the canyon, it spreads and the force dissipates... And typically, it is only ONE canyon. THIS time, it was EVERYWHERE. Up high in the mountains, on the slopes, and on the plains.

But there is always talk of getting snow-bound or getting your car stuck in the snow. I remember asking our real-estate agent why the mountain houses we were looking at always had so much storage (compared to our home states). He was upfront about the need to be well-provisioned. 10 years ago, we got 12 feet of snow over 3 days and just about the whole state was declared a federal disaster area. We were snow-bound for 10 days. The snow-blower was useless. There was no way I could dig out the driveway to get to the road. Well... honestly, it took DD and me 3 days hand-digging a 3-foot wide path about 50 feet long... She was a little girl, and I had shoulder injuries, and DH worked out-of-state and we knew no one to call.... it HAD to be done. I was terrified the walls would collapse on me. But I had provisions! Let me tell you, I had provisions! At least a month's worth of canned food and toilet tissue and a huge fire hazard of wood for the fireplace stacked next to the house that no one could get to because it was buried under 12 feet of snow.... And that was when I realized the power had better not go out because I had no water stockpiled (we had well-water, but the pump runs on electricity!) and no way to heat the house if we had no gas.

My sister was vacationing in a remote cabin about an hour's drive away with her family and some friends... she called me to rescue her, but I couldn't help. The sheriff there was swamped with calls for rescue. They had NO food and they still couldn't get help. Finally, one of the little girls fell and got hurt so badly that they were finally all rescued and taken to the hospital and none of them have yet to return to Colorado. And I couldn't help them at all. Maybe the memory of my helplessness then is why I've been so obsessive about being careful and conservative this time around. DD was just a little girl -- I didn't burden her with my concerns; DH wasn't there to experience it so he doesn't understand either.....

I am getting tired of myself! I'm tired of obsessing! I want a long hot soak in the tub with water that is sanitary!

Like you, Wispy, having the computer is what is keeping me sane right now. Look, it's tomorrow already! After midnight! End of story and a non-sequeteur: I snuggled down with a good book and started reading.

Hi there ladies

I meditated
I ate low cal
I walked 450 steps

Well I checked my gas bottle yesterday as inspired by Koshie and it is solid rust where things need to turn. The burner will not sit on the top for some reason....so I will get rid of that and buy myself a gas BBQ for the back deck. I refilled all 7 water bottles with fresh water, checked the torch batteries to get me to the supply of candles and all is well. Loads of canned food - something I always have and also skim milk powder, tea, decaf coffee. Guess if needs be I will have to dig a hole in the garden for disposing of rubbish and also bodily functions. lol.
All cans and bottles can go in the recycling bin which is very large and should last at least a couple of months, or more.
Hoping I will never have to use these things as of course we all do - but it is a comfort to know that at least there are some steps we can take to prepare. I wish we had underground shelters here like those of you who live in the tornado areas. I've only seen them on TV. See the kids hurrying home from school and the whole family going under ground and shutting down wooden lids. I guess there is food and water down in those little houses. :)

Love my crockpot - so easy to cook - so succulent to eat.

When we have cooler weather I do have 2 8 qt crockpots going! LOL! One upstairs, one downstairs!
When we go up north to our lake property we live with so little and such tiny spaces (29' 5th wheel, 12x24' bunkhouse, satellite toilet for 15 of us) We are outside 99% of the time! So much fun, but here in the city we think we "need" more!

Crockpot on, pork loin, kraut, caraway. I use to serve this with a dumpling, instead I am sautéing cauliflower in butter for the dumpling. I would be lost if I didn't have my crock pot, I love it and wish at times I had room for two of them.

We are mobile most of the time so we adapt pretty well. Many times we stay (when we travel) in places that have no power, for a quick stay or to rest. We have a generator and can contain water and waste water, but only for a short period of time. Gas is our main source for so much. It makes a person think and plan ahead. But even with these inconveniences it is not hard.

When we had built our home we lived very rustic, hauling water from the lake to do all of our water needs. Of course the water was crystal clear. I enjoyed this time in our lives. The following winter, we were without power for 10 days, huge snow/ice storm. Generator and gas as well as fire places kept us going. I actually look back and what I found troublesome and it actually was enlightening and as well very heart warming. We as a family got closer. But with all disasters there is a price to pay. Some didn't survive. Many had costly damages as well.
We are hearty people and we move forward, no matter what we are faced with.

I watch Surviverman off and on and as well think of my wilderness training, how would we cope in a situation like this? I as well have been very impressed by many homeless people, how they can survive. Many lessons to be learned from so much that is occurring in our world today. We need to pay attention and stop taking so much for granted.

I shopped well last evening. I hit all the local farmer's stands, the local butcher shops to gather the menu I am planning for the next week.
I am seeing progress and am very pleased.

I'm with Erin, Koshie, venting with those who will understand and not judge is what we need to do in times of stress. You keep right on sharing whatever you need to. If I suddently found myself having to use gas (I only have electric), I would be in the same position as you in reverse. In fact I got a gas bottle and ring over here as we have all been advised to do with the earthquakes and volcanos. I bought mine several years ago and have not tried it out lately just in case it has a leak. lol. DS says its fine..... but I just don t trust gas. So we are similar.

Crockpot is wonderful I use it all the time and mine boils as well. Germ free you will be my love. I don't have a rice cooker so don't know about that.

In fact you have made me think I really must do something about this gas bottle and I will try it out this morning and see if it is functional and I will also replace all the water in the water bottles, so you have helped me to actually do what I have been too lazy to do. Thank you.

It is so easy to think it is not going to happen to "me". Where ever each "me" is. And we are living in a time when all these natural and man made disasters seem to be at a premium.

Do you know what I would miss the most is the computer and TV.... good golly what a thing to admit.

Come to think of it I also need to get a new can opener that actually works first go......... I had loads of canned food, but of course would lose everything in the fridge and freezer. Do you have a gas fridge and freezer Koshie, or have you lost all that food as well.

Loving thoughts going out to you my friend.

Today
meditated
ate low carb
walked 450
got my gas bottle and ring sorted
refilled my water bottles.
got disinfectant and plasters for first aid.
got all my meds up to date

So I am in for the siege now............ Imagine having to eat pasta and rice all the time(something I never eat but the kids love so I have lots and also baked beans which I seldom if ever eat. :)

Koshie were you prepared for all this - do you have those adverts on TV like we do over here all the time telling us what to do in case of an emergency?

...there is absolutely nothing wrong with you! My gosh this is happening right now to you and your area, your community, your state....it makes it real and it is real! This is too close to home, not to be scary, not to be a huge impact on you and your life. Take a deep breath because I think you are experiencing relief after holding your breathe for so long having this all breathing down your neck, your life and to close to home. Reality is, it could have been you and in your life. Koshi, it is happening at your elbow, in your face and in your life. This is extremely important. Never stop sharing what you need to, to get through this. You are safe and you are trying very hard to share all of this, so you can make sense of it all.
PTS effects us all in a different way, even if it didn't happen to us, directly.
Never apologize for taking care of yourself and your family. Your instinct is totally healthy and wise for you doing what you are lead to share here.

I know it SOUNDS awful when I describe it, but really, we (personally) are merely inconvenienced. I am NOT going to complain about pouring rain-water to flush a toilet when other people have no toilets, no homes at all! I am NOT complaining about trying to figure out how I'm going to cook food for my family when others are figuring out where they are going to get ANY food and how they will afford it and where will they sleep tonight and what will they wear tomorrow when they have no clothes.... NO! It takes awhile (apparently) to stop protesting and start figuring things out. It takes awhile to make the mental adjustments. Thank you God, thank you God, thank you GOD! My mental adjustments are few!

Yesterday, we gathered as much water as we have buckets. And I found and set out (on top of my useless stove) my electrical appliances: the electric skillet, rice cooker, tiny deep-fat fryer (completely forgot about that one!), slow cooker, blender, a panini press (potential grill?), and blender -- to stimulate "proper" thinking. I feel MUCH better! If I can boil oil, I can boil water in a deep-fryer! Or the rice cooker! And that means I can clean dishes! And countertops! OMG! Am I actually EXULTING to be able to do dishes and kitchen-cleaning? OMG! What is wrong with me!?!
emoticon emoticon

And if anybody KNOWS what else besides sandwiches one can use a panini press to cook, please share. Have you cooked anything other than rice in a rice-cooker? I HAVE found various sites online for unusual things to cook in a slow-cooker (and once cooked a ckae in it myself), so I'm good with that appliance.... Oh, wait! My slow-cooker actually is a "chef's pot" capable of boiling water! And it is big enough to boil a good quantity, unlike my tiny deep-fryer. I can fix pasta for DH and DD (their favorite meal!)!

Life is Good! You know, you get SO set in your ways... it is embarrassing how difficult it can be to "think outside the box"! I grew up with gas, I've always had gas... and those electrical appliances have generally just taken up kitchen-cabinet-space after the first year or two. They will finally earn their keep!

Oh Koshie, you are taking it very well indeed, under what must be extremely trying conditions.
So hope the electricity stays with you so that you can have hot food. I always think hot seems much more satisfying and filling.

Eliz, chatted over on your new thread about the CAD. I loved it too.

Hi Erin, I too am gently walking. Did much more than 450 yesterday because the
family and I were out for dinner. So much fun I love dressing up and eating out. We had a great thai meal chicken sate to start followed by tiger bay prawns and cashew nuts for me.
Sooooooooo good.

Thank you all for all your prayers! I don't say that idly... how can I not try to do my very best when I know I have all that power behind me?

Yesterday, we got out of the house and found a way into Boulder. There was important stuff to do -- TAKE A SHOWER! The gym we haven't been using enough has abruptly become very important in our lives! I laughed and told DD that NOW I know she'll be coming to the gym at least twice a week! It is GOOD to feel clean and to know that I can have a hot shower!

I knew I had to "tweak" things. I've been at a stall way too long. So I'm going to do Carbohydrate Addicts Diet. I did it years ago and it was incredibly easy. But then I got lazy and carb creep took over. Now with ALL the support from SP- I know I can do this!!

Thanks everybody! You are the BEST!!

I am cleaning up my act this week, focusing on low carb instead of lower carb. I am allowing those" in between" things way to much in my diet. Things like, flax crackers, flax muffins, to much fruit and not enough fat, meat or greens. I didn't drink my water or teas this week end, with all our boating. Didn't exactly know if or when we would have a potty break. That really caused issues. But am back on track and doing better.
Walking gently and doing light weights.

You all sound happy, even with the situations you are all dealing with. Compromise is healthy, finding options to stay the course. Great job!

Congrats on increasing family members, always a blessing, well in most cases LOL

Prayers coming your way ladies for blessings, health and happiness. Hoping everything works out Koshi, you are a strong woman and I am sure embracing all you can, to deal with the challenges.

I mostly use electric small appliances to cook. Years ago a power surge during a storm killed my good stove- I replaced it with a cheap one that I hate!
But when we had no power for 4 days in June I tried "frying" cat fish on the grill- ugh! It was more like "boiled"! But still tasty!

You are in our thoughts and prayers Koshie. emoticon

It has been difficult to stay on diet as cooking is tricky. I gained a pound over the week. But I managed to fix a good, LC meal last night. E-mailing a friend, I realized that just because I don't have a working stove/oven and you can't get good results with meat in the microwave oven doesn't mean I have to do without -- it just means I have to haul out all those electrical cooking appliances I've ignored for years! I know I have an electric skillet somewhere! This is as excited as I've felt all week!

We are still accustoming ourselves to what is required. And I am trying to plan ahead for what is to come. DD is understanding. I wish DH was.

Hi there ladies,

Eliz so sorry to hear about the 'bugs' that kept you away from the wedding, but delighted your daughter has found such a great guy and wishing them every happiness. Great news that DH stepped in and took control. :)
Feel better soon.

Just off to read your blog on Boulder Koshie, I knew when I saw the flooding on the news last night that it must be close by where you live. So pleased you are OK and that you have power again.

Today I am going eating low carb
I am going to walk 450
I am going to do housework

Got up early to watch the America's Cup in San Fran Bay live. Man the second match was exciting - loved every second. My youngest DS and I are great fans of those races.

Have a happy week all.

Yesterday, I watched some TV -- have been deprived of favorite shows for a week!

Well it was not supposed to rain yesterday until evening. But it started at noon. So no wedding on the deck. It was in the living room. My 9 yr old son was sick, and husband and I weren't feeling well either. It was odd, we weren't sure why the three of us who had travelled to pick up puppy got sick? By 4 p.m. I was too sick to help with anymore preparations and joined my 9 yr old who was laying in our bed. We missed everything.

Thank goodness husband was able to carry on. The groom had 5 people and our daughter requested the kids stay upstairs during the ceremony- which I understood, because the boys would not be quiet as the vows were read. They don't understand.

I hate having health issues. (I refuse to say I'm disabled) My daughter is so loving and understanding, and the grooms family knew a man with MS and could totally understand why I was not doing so good. And the groom is a very kind young man, wise beyond his years. I am blessed. He comes from nice family too.

Koshie, I train my Service Dogs. She is 8 wks. My last SD boy was put down 5 years ago for a knee disease. I saved my pennies for my new girl- a yellow British Labrador. I have a trainer who helps me. Puppy's name is Mary, AKC name "Mary Queen of Scots" for the Buchleuch kennels in Scotland that have bred British Labs since the 1800s.

And yes- she wailed thru the ceremony upstairs in her crate by me! LOL!!

no coffee. I was wise enough not to go most of the week. People really don't know how to drive in rain around here; and it rained constantly all week. They'll drive like insane madmen in the snow, but even a sprinkle of water has them making the strangest decisions in a car.... This is a disaster area. Most businesses closed. People evacuated to the north, to the south, to the east and even to the west of us -- that is higher up in the mountains. Buildings destroyed by boulders pushed down by the raging creeks. Lost the gas, but still have electricity. Am beginning to appreciate just how lucky we were! It will be hard to find a gas station high and dry enough to trust the underground gasoline storage tanks weren't compromised by water intrusions. I'm not going anywhere as I am very low on gas and the only place I could go is Longmont which is hard-hit by flooding also.

Betty what fun, I love garage sales and all the excitement that goes with them. When I used to do them on a regular basis I would get home about lunch time exhausted. I think for me it was as much the excitement. I used to buy stuff to do up and sell. Especially toys and dolls houses. So much fun. Hope all goes well for your friend. When I had clots on my lungs they started me off on something they injected into my belly for the first five days in hospital, then when I came out I had Warfarin to thin my blood for six months. You sure need a relaxing weekend now to renew your strength.

Eliz, yes, yes, yes, when I was walking last month I ended up with a really bad night of cramping. Have not had it in years. It was right up one leg and went from my thigh down to my calf and my foot. At one point I got quite scared because it was bad. I had not eaten any salt that day so had some chicken with a good dose of salt and pepper, also hot water bottles and doing the ankle and foot stretches I was taught many years ago when I used to get it all the time. I slowed down some after that, but some days after that experience I found there was a lot of pain in my thigh and knees which is how come I am back to 400 steps a day.
I do not want to aggravate the conditions that I have. Thankfully the pains - at least the worst of them - have gone and I am doing my daily walking.

The Big Day is here. WOO HOO. What are going to call the new puppy? I too hope she wont yowl all the way through the service. :)

Koshie, being trapped with flooding must mean it is quite severe. How did the coffee morning go with the new girl friends?

Today
I am eating lo cal. Have soup prepared and a vege dish
strawberry mousse for dessert.

somewhat at a loss, NOWYOUDIDIT.... are you raising an untrained puppy to become a service dog, or did you just get a service dog?

Having been trapped at home due to flooding, I've been catching up on paperwork and pleasure reading.

We drove 2 hours to pick up my new Service dog, a British Lab, and 2 hours back. I was so stiff from sitting that long! ugh!

No weight loss from my exercising, but I feel muscle building in my legs. Bad part is they cramp now since I started walking. Wispy do your legs cramp if you over do?
I had not walked for exercise in 3 years- my longest ever to not walk/exercise. :o(

So no walking today. Daughter's wedding is at 6 p.m. Hope my puppy doesn't howl through it as we stand on the deck to watch! :o) Puppy has to wait in her crate. :o)

Today there were garage/yard sales in several houses here in the MHP where I live - my friend came over this morning and we walked all around in and out and zig zagged around and went to all of the sales here. She had a little carrier like people take to the store. it was a fun day. It's about a mile around my park just walking on the perimeter, so we probably did close to two with the back and forth stuff.

But, I'm really tired tonight. I had to get up at 4:45 this morning because I had to pick up a friend at 5:30 and get her over to the hospital where she was scheduled for a angioplasty. Got that done, she now has to have surgery Monday since she has 3 blocked main arteries in her leg because of a clot, they are going to put stents so the blood will circulate. I don't quite understand, and not sure what they'll do with the clot, maybe block that vein off - not sure yet. They said she'd be in the hospital for 4 days. She's had a big boatload of problems here lately and is diabetic on top of all of it. Anyhow, bottom line is I've been up a lot of hours today and it's time to go to bed.

I just got back from 1.5 miles. I haven't been able to do a straight 2 miles as of yet. I can break it up and do it, but outside on pavement I can't.
Leslie I can do two and maybe I will try her again the next rainy day.
I plan on rowing again today.

For me it is routine, and schedule. Fall I am more organized and as well have a schedule I follow. Summer for me is a free fall. Of course then I get off plan and gain weight as well.

Totally impressed! What's gotten into everybody? Is there an exercise flu going around? No, it must be the approach of Autumn. THAT'S what's in the air! I didn't notice it when I started this thread, but I've certainly noticed it these last 6 months ----- in late spring, everyone started concentrating on their diets (as reported here); in late summer, all I hear about is exercise! Do we go in cycles? Oh, I'm not COMPLAINING! I'm delighted that so many of us are thinking and feeling and seeing that diet and exercise are good.... even....REWARDS in and of themselves!

It started raining 3 days ago. Yesterday, I thanked God for the rain. I expressed my gratitude. And since I was trapped inside, I cleaned house. LOts of house-cleaning. I cleaned the inside of the fridge even! This morning, I'm tired of rain already! What a selfish sissy I am! I want my sunshine! No more house-cleaning! Please! (My plants are happy though!)

Thanks ALL for the encouragement!

Wispy, I tore my shoulder rotator cuff in my late 20's. It never "healed" and always was weak. In my forties, I tried to strengthen my shoulder by doing recommended exercises, starting with TINY weights. After FIVE YEARS, I had built up to SIX POUNDS (I think this verifies I was NOT rushing things!) -- and the 6 lb weights were making my shoulder hurt. So I complained to my doctor and asked him what I should do. "Don't lift weights!" was his (sssstttupid!) reply!

Now, I want to be as strong and capable and fit and healthy as possible. I do what I can, but my right shoulder has limits that don't respond to my will; and that is all there is to it! I understand your frustration, WISPY. "Start where you are; do what you can." Give yourself time to grow. Nurture yourself -- don't try to beat yourself into shape!

Yesterday, I went to church and saw a movie with DD.

Koshie my love, thanks for that. You are not alone. Others are saying the same thing. It just seems such a small amount, I never thought of increasing so slowly. But I am definitely taking it on board. In fact I did 200 this morning and had to rest. I'm thinking maybe doing my walking as soon as I wake up is not a good thing for me. I was recommended on a walking schedule, seems it is when we get most benefit, but I'm thinking I may need time to get moving first. I had a lot to do today and have only just finished - its now just after 4.20. I'm delighted I got it all done, and of course there will have been quite a bit of walking involved. Guess I don't think of counting the steps, unless I am actually doing it specifically.

I'm away in the morning for my mini vac and legs are feeling much better. Will not walk much while I'm away this time as everything is close by. See you all later in the week.

Have a good one ladies.

Wispy, adding 50 steps EVERY day is a LOT! It really is. Many physical fitness experts would recommend that you implement goals over a week's time, or even monthly, rather than daily! You may be at your equilibrium point now. Why don't you back off 25 steps, and then later in the same day, deliberately take those 25 steps? (Or maybe, you'll feel better breaking your steps into 2 groups of 300, then 50... I'm sure you'll find what works!) And do that for a week. Then see if you can't add TEN (10) steps more to your 325 for a full week, while still taking the other 25 steps later in the day.

Muscles grow more slowly than your WILL evidently, Wispy! By breaking up the number you do in a day, you'll still make progress in endurance, but be gentler on your body. And I expect you'll feel less fatigue.

Yesterday, I went to aerobics and after class, I invited the ladies to join me at the local coffee shop for some conversation. I plan on issuing this invitation every Saturday until it becomes habitual! Only one lady took me up on it this time, and we really enjoyed each other's company. Turns out we have a LOT in common -- even the same last name!

I ate well today, but didn't do much of anything else - spent some time out on the deck with coffee and a book. bought a new pair of walking shoes, took a little nap for about 30 minutes..

Exciting day, huh???

I want to get myself back in my habit of getting up and doing something every 45 minutes or so that I sit here at the computer doing useless things (games, scrabble, etc.) I've got my timer sitting right here in front of me - so what's my excuse??? I guess I just get too involved sometimes.

I meditated
I ate low carb
I actually slept early as well - dead beat though, no other reason
Have been doing that a lot lately, not like me. I usually need very little sleep
I walked my 350 steps. Legs felt very tired today, no idea why.
Was so grateful to sit down when I had finished.
However now, a couple of hours later they are feeling much better.
Tempted to do some more walking BUT DID NOT DO IT. WOO HOO.
