Great article! I love Dove and what they stand for!!! I have teenage daughters that are 15 headed towards 16 and they definitely struggle with their body image but not because they are overweight. They actually get people telling them that they look anorexic even though that couldn't be further from the truth. They are very healthy and have a healthy relationship with food!!!

It's a tough world out there for women of ALL ages and Dove goes above and beyond to teach us what that means.

I don't know that there is anything wrong with wanting to look better in clothes and in wanting to wear a smaller size. In honesty, it is primarily vanity that got me off my butt and eating healthy. But, I would never tell my child that. I have a 2 year old son, so it isn't an issue at this point... but if I ever had a daughter, or if my son ever has a weight issue... I don't know that I would completely discourage vanity as a reason to get healthy. BUT... if he were to ask me why I was losing weight, I think I would answer him honestly... within reason. Would I tell him that I wanted to look better, to be told that I was pretty, to have nice legs? No. I would tell him that I wanted to be fit. To be in a healthy BMI. That I want to have more energy to do the things in life that I want to do. And to be able to wear the clothes I like. They are all true.

But, the thing that really gets me off my butt? The vanity? I think I would keep that on the DL.

I think that size acceptance is important and it is important to feel great at ANY size. I fully support Dove in their efforts of recognizing beauty in all shapes and sizes. But, to negate vanity as a reason to get off our butts and get working, you take away a major motivator.

Personally, I think that the media should start embracing women in all shapes and sizes, recognizing their beauty... but also their health. Lets start having size 6-8 models be the norm, not size 0. I want everyone to be accepted and to feel beautiful.

But, I just can't get away from the fact that vanity was a huge motivator for me. Maybe it is a "bad" one... but if a "bad" motivation got me healthy, is it that bad? I am healthy now... when I wasn't before and that is because as an adult, I acknowledged my vanity and took control. Without a doubt we need to be careful in what we tell our children about size, weight, etc... but if as adults, we can be honest about our motivations, then I don't know that any of them are "bad".

Imperfection is important. If we were all perfect, then there would be no such thing as growth, and everyone would be extremely boring, which is, paradoxically, not that perfect.-- Dr. Matt

Good article. I am losing weight because I want to be healthier. But knowing that if i keep working in a year or two I'll be at my ideal weight and i'll improve the numbers on my lipid panel is not motivating enough to stay on track each and every day. Thats why I look to short term incentives-like fitting in my clothes better, being able to ride a roller coaster, etc. But that is not something I share with my kids. They know I want to be healthy so i can spend more time with them doing fun things. They don't need to know that I'm also looking forward to getting out of the plus side and into regular sized clothes.

Its all about how you act, what you say. If you complain in front of the mirror, your kids are gonna get that, if you are concentrating more on a healthy weight instead of 'getting skinny' they will get that too.

Yeah, I know what you mean BlueJedi. Health may be my reason, but it's not what gets me up off my butt. Unlike wanting to wear a pretty smaller size dress (sleeveless with great looking arms to show off would be awesome) at my sister's June garden wedding. A difference between reasons or motivations and incentives, I guess. It's definitely something that would need to be made clear to our daughters as we diet, because they may only be seeing the short term "showing off in the great dress" and not the ultimate reward desired of health, strength and endurance, etc.

Very good article, thanks for sharing! A lot of what is being said goes right to the SP principles. Eat to live, eat healthy...its not a diet, it has to be a choice for your own life.

I'd say your sisters wedding was extra motivation. I think if your trying to loose weight not for the wrong reasons-like making your ex boyfriend jealous at your 25 yr high school reunion, you want to loose 20 pounds to win back an ex or to gain the approval of someone, that's the wrong reason to.

Losing weight to look good for a loved one's wedding, to feel better about yourself, because you want to look good and feel good are the right reasons.

This is really worth putting some thought into. Many things motivate my desire for weightloss. Health is primary, but is it wrong to use my sister's wedding this summer as an incentive? an external motivator?
