My house is by no means as clean as it was before I had kids, but here's what I do every day. The kids have a bedtime of 9 and they can watch one hour of tv before bed. Every day I ask them to please clean up their messes before they can watch tv. It's really their choice how much tv they actually get to watch because it's directly affected by how much business they get done.
Dishes get done, because every morning before I leave for work I unload the dishwasher and put the dirty ones in, starting it if i need to.
Laundry gets done, because every night when I get home from work I do one load, INCLUDING folding and putting it away.
My kids are responsible for putting away their own clothes each night (they are 9 and 5).
Beyond that, on my days off I usually spend 1 to 2 hours while the kids are busy, doing deep cleaning, like the bathrooms and whatnot, but I get compliments on my house being "so clean for a single mom"

Love yourself!

I have five kids; 9, 7, 6, 4 & 2. My motto is, "Cleaning the house while the kids are still growin', is like raking the leaves while the wind is still blowin". It is SUCH a difficult task to keep the house 'picked up'. My standards have lowered by far from before I had kids. I make my kids pick up things if they move on to different toys, or before they go outside to play. They can't watch a movie or play video games unless their rooms are clean. This really helps. To me, it's all about easing up on my expectations (a peaceful family is more important than a clean living room), and being consistent with house rules. And I love the Fly Lady!!

Problems are to the mind what exercise is to the muscles, they toughen and make strong.

I started what my mom did when I was a kid. Anything left out in the house - not in my daughter's room - without permission (like her backpack is okay) gets taken away for one week. I would put them into a box and write the date and the item on the box so I knew when she would get it back. Her room is still a mess, but the door is closed and the rest of the house is picked up. Now, after many years of this, she looks before going to bed to make sure that things are taken care of.

How's it going? My boys are 5 and 7 and I feel like all I do is to scream at them to pick up.

That sounds similar to what the Flylady suggests doing. I agree that it works, but I just have to be consistent about it.

Okay.. I am only one person and can't do it all. My girls are 7, 10, and 14 and it is like pulling teeth to get them to pick up. Well I came up with a plan based on something I found on a Spark Message Board Challenge. The challenge was to set a timer and clean as much as you can for 15 minutes. Well I did this for a while but then gave up, even though it worked great. Today I decided I needed to make this a "family" event. We worked on the kitchen, playroom, and living room for 10 minutes each. The children got marks for hard work. The person with the most marks at the end of the week gets to do an activity of there choice (nothing expensive) with me. Of course they are all tied as of night one. It worked beautifully. I hope this wasn't a one time success. The house isn't spotless but I don't want to cry when I look at it. LOL If you try this idea let me know how it works or anything you did to improve it. Sorry so wordy.. I am a babbler.. lol
