Glad to hear you are having some success with St. Johns Wort. Two others that I have come across are: Sam-E and Rhodiola rosea. Check with you doc about them to see if they may also be viable alternatives for you.

Ok just in case anyone is wondering I have been feeling pretty good since I started the ST. Johns wart. moods been a lot more stable. I have actually been able to stick to my diet more. I just got a scale the last week and found out I had gained allot of weight went up ten lbs from the last doc visit. But this may have been due to the IUD I had put in to try and help balance my cycle and slow down the flow, who knows. I am happy to report I have lost 3lbs since starting and getting use to the herbals Yay

Maybe your husband could go to a couple appointments with you - Doctor AND Nutritionist. Perhaps THEY can give HIM a list of what is NOT suitable for you.
I'm glad that you are having a close eye kept on you. Unfortunately a lot don't get that :-( Nice SparkPage, too :-) Kris Co-Moderator Dealing with Depression

i don't know about that stuff, but have you ever heard of the bach remedies?
they are made from flowers and plants which are left under the sun in clean water to distil their essence. there is a remedy for every condition. i haven't tried them (yet) and I don't know if they can go a long way and really help with depression or stuff, but I'm sure that just by smelling that liquid you get a better mood. I'm doing a 21 days no binge streak. FOR ME, it's been TREMENDOUSLY helpful to be accountable to other people and to compete against myself. St John is used by some for mild to moderate depression, but there are many people for whom this is not a viable option.
Your Psych Dr has suggested it, so as far as I am concerned, I would be inclined to give it a go. Keep a daily diary re your mood, including in relation to various events. They can be very valuable in helping decide with this form of treatment is right for you. Where it comes to medications, I wouldn't be inclined to allow other people's experience with a p.med affect me with my choice. We all respond in different ways to them, and what may be lethal for one person, may prove to be 'just what the Dr ordered' for another. Have you been given medical advice re the Fatty Liver? ..... including being referred to a Registered Dietitian to help you avoid the foods that can aggravate it? I went to have a peek at your SparkPage but you don't have one. If you like to create one and have it open so that other members can drop by, you will find that you get loads more support. We can then leave encouraging little messages - even the occasional goodie and THEY are always good to get :-) Take care, and don't be a stranger - let us know how you are getting on. Thank you all for your responses. As I have mentioned I have what is called fatty liver disease at least once on my profile. It was actually my sphyc doctor who recommended it. I do not take any other medications other then daily vitamins and melatonin occasionally to sleep. Because of the liver though and the fact the few drugs I was allowed to take not working he thought that this might help with less effect on my liver. I am not fallowing the bottles recommendation for dosage I am fallowing his which is way less. The bottle says 2 pills with each meals, i am taking only 2 one in the morning with breakfast and one with dinner. I have 4 kids that i love deeply so staying alive as long as possible is something I plan on doing. I do not just change my meds or think because its herbal its safe. Probably should have elaborated a bit more. I was just hoping for some insight from others that might have taken it. Thanks again for taking the time to respond it is much appreciated. So sorry if this came out sounding rude wasn't meant to be.

Hi, from what I understand some people do take St. Johns Wort for minor depression, but the results of the efficacy of the drug is still mixed. Since you have researched the herbal remedy's use you are probably aware that it is recommended that you not start any herbal remedy without consulting your doctor and that St. Johns Wort can interact with other drugs, especially heart medications, as well as have side effects of it's own. A recommended dosage is mentioned in this WebMD article that I found online as 300 mgs. I have included the link to that article below.
www.webmd.com/depression/guide/st-jo hn s-wort The article is just a brief overview of the herbal supplement and outlines it's possible side effects. I hope that you will find the information useful. I have never taken St. Jon's Wart but I have a friend who swears by it. But be careful, check with your pharmacist regarding interactions with other meds you are taking.

I have heard of it only as an old remedy for almost whatever ails you but not depression. I have also done some research on the meds that I take and didn't care for what I saw but I know that without them I don't do as well as I would like. I hope you find some release / relief from it. if not keep trying, you will find something that will assist you.
Finally motivated.

I was just wondering if anyone has used St. Johns wart for depression. I don't have allot of options as far as medication because my pcp doesn't want me on anything processed through the liver. The chemical produced products are limited on what I can take and from the four or five I can take none have worked, or have undesired side effects. I have done some research on the product and started it today, but was wondering if anyone has taken it and what results, good or bad, or any they had from it.
