With my first I totally wanted a natural birth without drugs. That didn't end up being the case because after they induced me his heart rate would drop every time I had a contraction, so they ended up having to do an emergency c-section.

I have been told if I have any future kids, they will be c-section.

Baby number one, I went in open to either way. I labored for 12 hours after my water broke before my contractions petered out and they started pitocin. As they slowly increased the pitocin rate, I was writhing in pain with every contraction, and finally got an epidural 3 hours later. It was wonderful. I was able to still feel my legs and feet and got to nap to revive for pushing.

Next time, I will probably go the same way, go into it open and see what I feel needs to happen. However, if pitocin is involved, I will have an epidural, no question.

I asked for one with my son, and it ultimately had to be removed because it hit a nerve going in causing a lot of shooting pain. I had my son naturally as a result and honestly, it wasn't the horror story I was lead to believe even with him being almost 10 pounds.

I can't honestly say what I would do should we have another child. I had a lot of complications with that pregnancy so it's been recommended that I have a c-section. But I also don't plan on being so overweight which will help lessen the possible complications... hopefully!

Maybe my thoughts will change once this is closer to being a reality and I have done more research, but right now I would 100% go with an epidural. I have always been scared of the pain of childbirth, though that fear has lessened now that we are getting on the track toward starting a family!

I wanted to go Natural with my first, but once I got to 6" dilation, I couldn't take the pain of the contractions. As soon as my hubby left the room to greet his parents, I ordered up my Epidural and was so grateful for the relief. It made my birthing experience very comfortable and a happy memory. Now, I am not afraid to do it again. Before my first, I was really afraid of labour.

The Epidural was nothing. The only thing that bothered me was an allergic reaction of itchiness that lasted about 2 hrs after it wore off. That wasn't nice, but it was just irritating, which is better than burning hot pain in my books.

I think that I would go natural as long as possible again, and then get the Epidural later into dilation. I think that it made everything go smoothly.

Natural I pray!
Although I do want to deliver in the hospital in-case of emergency situations. Hopefully though I'm out of there soon as possible! I

I'm inspired by my mom and my mother-in-law to go natural.
My mom went natural with all three of us and same with my husband's mother. My husband's mother actually had six of her seven children in her home!!! (Blows my mind) All healthy! Such a blessing.....But yeah that's the plan =) Praying everyday for a safe pregnancy. May all our pregnancies be safe! AMEN!

Ideally I'd like to have a natural birth without epidural. But it is so hard to say without ever having been through it. My sister and mom both had natural births so I'd like to think I can do it too... but we'll have to see! A friend of mine recently had a baby and she had natural birth plan, but ended up having to have a C-section after 2 days in labour because the baby's head was tilted upwards and she wasn't able to push her out. So I guess as much as you can have a plan you also I think need to go with the flow...

Just joined so I'm late to the party. With DD I had an all-natural birth and would definitely go that route again. Easy peasy!

I think I would just prefer not to be in labor. I know there is the possibility of complications either way and a longer recovery time. Mainly I think I'm afraid of labor and just want the baby out. There is certainly plenty of time for me to change my mind as I'm not even pregnant yet!

I had an epidural the first time around and wouldn't hesitate to go that route again. My contractions went from nothing to practically on top of each other and the epidural gave me a much needed respite. It wore off by the time I needed to start pushing though so I felt all of those.

QT: Just out of curiosity, what is the reason you would prefer c-section?

I had a natural birth at an extremely supportive hospital Kaiser Redwood City (one of the lowest C section rates in CA). The midwives, OBs and L&D nurses were so wonderful. I don't think most hospitals are like that since at the end of the day, having babies is still a business. My husband and I took the Bradley Method classes, which I recommend if you plan on having a natural birth. My labor was 14 hours and I had contractions every 30 secs to 2 minutes the whole time. If you want a natural birth, also consider getting a doula who will advocate your needs/wants.

For me, why natural birth? 2 of my coworkers got horrible migraines months after the delivery with epidurals. Also, epidural babies come out dopey. Seriously, there are videos of just born epidural babies versus non epidural babies. My son had an APGAR score of 9 - they almost never give out 10s. So alert.

Ok, for this one, I have to admit, I would have loved to have a home birth like my mom did for both of her children. However, my husband and I were more comfortable in a hospital setting. I also really wanted to go unmedicated, but I was not prepared. I did not take any birthing classes or look up techniques very thoroughly and I should have. If I get to do it again, I will look into that a lot more. Unfortunately, I also was throwing up every third contraction before I even left my house. Long story, but I made it to 5cm before we got to the hospital, but i was very dehydrated because I couldn't keep anything in my stomach. I'm a rare case, do not let that scare anyone. I ended up getting the epidural around transition which gave me about an hour of respite. I used it to nap, on my side, and it all went to that side, so for the rest of the time I was half numb. good times, funny story. Honestly, if I'm throwing up for a day if I get to do this again, I might get it again, but not laying on my side...

I've had two. Csections. The first was not by choice but the second one was. It wasn't great but not terrible either. If I have another I will most likely have to have another section. But I would try to go as natural as possible.

I like the idea of natural, but have gotten advice to let the doctors/nurses/midwives/doulas help with suggestions. A friend had two fantastic birth experiences with epidurals which is making me re-think my earlier stance.

My sister is going as natural as possible, hoping for a home birth, is thinking about a water birth, etc. so I'll get good perspective from her!

To echo the rest, though, the very most important thing is ending up with a healthy baby at the end. And since we're having trouble TTC, we just hope we get to experience it at all!

Well since I would prefer to have a C-section, definitely medication! If I end up going into labor before I make it to the C-section part, I would definitely want drugs.

had two previous epidurals was considering going without with this one but just can't decide so will probably just leave it for an in the moment decision. Not planning seems to be the name of the game for me with this baby.

ANDCOWSFLY it just numbs you doesn't make you loopy or anything like that I have full memories of both my previous births whether i'd like them or not ;) and was up and walking around within half hour of both births taking care of baby

I have toyed with the notion of a natural birth but I'm probably going to have an epidural. I just worry about being too doped up to remember and enjoy my first moments with baby.

Definitely want to be in a hospital for the birth, but I think I'd prefer natural birth with a midwife. If I can do seated birth instead of lying down, I'd like to try that (I've read that it's easier on mother and baby because gravity can help somewhat). Of course, I haven't had a baby before, so if I need that epidural, they'd better give it to me!

The ultimate goal is to get through pregnancy and birth with both baby and me healthy, so whatever enables me to meet that goal, I'll do.

Just call me La. Most everyone else does.

I've had both and would rather an epidural. But if things don't work out that way like with #2 them that's fine! As long as baby and I come out healthy in the end that's all that matters. No home birth for me though. Definitely want the hospital!

Question of the Week for September 22nd through 28th.

Did you have or do you plan to have an epidural? Planning on going a more natural route? Home birth? Undecided?
