The problem could have been cross contamination. A lot of people forget how much gluten is still in the pots, pans and grilles. They should have cleaned the grill top in the area they were going to use to prepare your food.
I am very sensitve to cross contamination and this is actually one of the first things that I learned as a newly diagnosised Celiac. Keep a gluten free cooking/serving area to prevent being glutened. A crumb of gluten or a smear of soy sauce based ingredient can be the culprit in your case. I am so sorry that you weren't able to enjoy the rewards of your lovely meal out. The mongolian cafe here where I live understand about gluten free and the needs of cooking "cleanly" as long as you let them know in advance.
