Good luck with the event, hoping it can turn out well. It would be cool if we could organize these kinds of events and be able to offer vaccines along for the ride, right?

Happy Thursday morning, which is my Friday -- or faux Friday as i call it. I've had better sleep the last couple of nights so celebrating that!

We are trying to organize a Pride in Pittsburgh that is one day in-person (properly distanced) and one day virtual.

I think it's easier for an old, out, loud queer like myself.

I worry about the kids - they needed the parades and visual reminders that they are not alone.

OTOH - we have so many more ways to connect online, now! I follow some LGBTQ+ Reddit communities and see more and more young folk being brave, bold and connecting with others online - and getting lots of support, even if they are stuck in scary small towns with families who don't understand.

A little sad that Pride has come and gone. Our city celebrates it in July because there's less chance of rain.

Now, even July is over. I will just have to carry Pride in my heart as we move through the rest of this crazy year.

That was some rare, good news! Also, trans and trans People of Color awareness is growing, too. Hopefully more protections will be put into place.

Which reminds me! The Equality Act has passed the House and is now before the Senate.
"This bill prohibits discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in areas including public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system."

Can we all take a quick action to support it? It's in the Judiciary Committee so please do reach out if your senators are any of the following:

REPUBLICAN MEMBERS
Chuck Grassley (IA)
John Cornyn (TX)
Michael S. Lee (UT)
Ted Cruz (TX)
Ben Sasse (NE)
Joshua D. Hawley (MO)
Thom Tillis (NC)
Joni Ernst (IA)
Mike Crapo (ID)
John Kennedy (LA)
Marsha Blackburn (TN)

Dianne Feinstein (CA) - Ranking member, super important, Cali!
DEMOCRATIC MEMBERS
Kamala Harris (CA)
Patrick Leahy (VT)
Dick Durbin (IL)
Sheldon Whitehouse (RI)
Amy Klobuchar (MN)
Christopher A. Coons (DE)
Richard Blumenthal (CT)
Mazie Hirono (HI)
Cory Booker (NJ)

If you know like-minded people in any of these states, please ask them as well. This would increase protections from the obvious, as well as stopping states from enacting "bathroom bills" discriminating (and creating abuse opportunities) for Trans People.

Calling and tweeting them really helps, but you can also sign one of several petitions in favor of the act. Here's MoveOn's:

I seem to have escaped the flu so far, but whenever I've had the flu, it has been March or later. This past week I've been mostly out of commission because the Myasthenia Gravis is acting up. I think I missed a dose of medication and then over did on the gardening but, whatever, I went to bed on a Tuesday about 3:00 and got up for supper on Wednesday and have been taking it easy most of the time since.

I've been interested in the Jain religion. I also admire it greatly - but don't think I will give up root vegetables like onions and garlic. I understand that it uproots the entire plant, but the entire plant does not have a nervous system! If plants feel pain, it is in a way that we cannot even begin to grasp.

Hope everyone is enjoying the last days of summer....or winter, if you're south of the equator.

Yes, dreamer, I second the caring, loving heart part. There are some people in India that follow the Janus philosophy/religion and don't believe in killing anything. They eat roots of plants and wear masks so they do not accidentally kill an insect while inhaling. I commend them too, though I could not live that kind of life myself. We all make the best adjustment that we can and that has to take into account our physical needs, our level of development, and probably lots of other things too many to mention. If all actually do as best they can, tremendous strides would be made toward improving this world.

Hey Dreamer!

I'm vegan and hear your pain and struggle around this issue. While I believe that a vegan diet is the very best choice for almost everyone in the nutrition-rich developed world, I understand that there are rare forms of disease that make plant-based diets almost impossible.

I know you will make the best choices for your health while continuing to have compassion for animals and the environment. I don't think that ever changes!

As to your roommates, I feel their pain. But reducing pain and death of our fellow beings is something we strive for - eliminating their bodies from our lives is impossible. Cars, shoes, vitamins and countless other products use parts of dead animals and are destructive to the environment as well.

Might be good to remind your roommates about that, eh? Us conscientious folks do what we can to make the best choices possible.

Hugs to you and thank you for your caring heart.

So far my body has been adjusting well to my dietary changes, and my roommates have mostly gotten over it. I was afraid that after 14 years of veganism, animal products would completely throw off my system, but that hasn't happened. I'm introducing things slowly (this week I introduced fermented dairy and a small amount of seafood... next week I'll add eggs and a little more seafood.)

Thank you! It's really refreshing to have some support.

I live with two vegans, and they're both very upset with my decision and are trying to find ways for me to increase my albumin levels without resorting to animal products. I've tried to up my protein intake with vegan sources, but it hasn't worked for me and my body.

I don't want to turn my back on veganism, but at the end of the day I need to care for my body and listen to what it needs.

take heart, spirited dreamer. I, too used to be a vegetarian, though never a vegan. I grew up in a meat loving family and during the 11 years I lived in NYC and being mostly a graduate student, it wouldn't be unusual for me to eat a pound of meat as part of my dinner. After moving to Wisconsin I eventually got into Hatha yoga quite seriously and I gradually became a vegetarian. This wasn't a planned or intellectual decision--I just "knew" that my body didn't "want" beef--and then pork--and then the idea of chicken became quite repulsive and finally fish were safe from me!!! When I stopped doing yoga, gradually I returned to eating meat.

It is difficult to really listen to your body and eat what it needs. Spark tells us to do this in terms of learning listening to when we should eat or when we are hungry. But I think finer tuning is quite possible. It is easier to do when we are ill--we may be temporarily repulsed by the thought of eating some specific or general types of food. It is harder when we are well and engaged in a life "too busy" to sit and listen to what our body wants us to eat that day.

Sometimes I think we damage ourselves by eating what our mind has determined is "right"--maintaining any specific diet is probably not physically very healthy, even if it is a "good" diet. Whether the "diet" is vegetarian, South Beach, USA pyramid, or whatever, over time it is a way to simplify our decisions about when and what to eat that does not take our body and its current and changing needs into account.

Perhaps this is a good thing for you--to get unlocked from your vegan image and spend some time personalizing your diet to custom fit it to your real self.

Honestly, if I hadn't had that drug reaction, I doubt I would've ever figured out I had mono. I had been a little sluggish lately, but nothing extremely bad.

Also, through some blood work, I figured out I have low albumin levels. As a vegan, it didn't surprise me a whole lot. Try as I might to keep my protein intake high, I can never seem to keep on it fully.

I have a medical condition that responds very poorly to low protein levels... so, I'm ditching veganism for the sake of my well-being. I'm going to be adding seafood, eggs, and dairy back into my diet. It pains me to do this, but my condition has slowly been getting worse and I can't keep living like this.

dreamer of spirits, it is amazing that the idea of exercising even entered your head if you have mono!!! I had it when I was a first year nursing student and could barely get to my classes. I slept most of the time for a couple months. The worst was nutrition class, located on the fourth floor of a building without elevators. I had to rest at every landing and well as between landings in order to make it to the top. Classmates covered for me, as if they discovered you had mono, you had to take a 6 month break from school. since courses I was taking were only offered in the fall, I would have had to start all over!!!

I hope things improve, Tweety!

I just got home from the hospital. I thought I was having a very bad reaction to one of my meds, so I went to the ER. After some blood work, they determined I have mono... which can apparently mess with the way your body reacts to some meds.

It looks like it'll be a little while before I can really work out again. For now it's just rest, hydration, and lots of miso soup.

Sounds like we all need some down time to recover. I had bad news from a doctor and need pt myself. What a way to end out a month, right?

Ughh... so I'm probably going to lose some weight this week, but not the way I'd like. I have a horrible stomach bug, and can't seem to hold anything down...

I'm for that!! I'll join in the dance if you let me know the time and date. In fact, you could do a wonderful blog for every Sparker to read with the request at the end that on (mm/dd/yy) at
____ AM/PM please stop whatever you are doing and sing YYYYYYMMMMMMCCCCCAAAAA as you dance, dance, dance!! (Be sure and include the time zone.)

Maybe, though, if both of you go, you could sing the YYYYMMMMMCCCCCAAAAA song at your old gym if you sang it in harmony!!!

My partner wants to start going to the gym with me, so I think I'm keeping my PF membership (since it allows me to bring a guest, whereas the YMCA doesn't.)

I found out that the YMCA near me has a special membership rate for low-income folks. I'm debating switching from Planet Fitness to the YMCA, since price-wise there's not much difference (since I qualify for the low-income rate.)

On one hand, Planet Fitness is open 24 hours, so I can work out whenever.

On the other hand, the YMCA has a pool, and I LOVE swimming!

Hmm... now I just need to decide...

I feel you, DreamSpirit.

I can't change the world nor singlehandedly remove the leaders who promote hatred.

I can look at ways to be loving and kind toward others, particularly toward others who, like us in the LGBTQ community, are targets of hatred.

That's maybe not much, but seems particularly important right now.

I am heartbroken. Been up most of the night.

Yesterday was Friday in New Zealand which is the day of Jumu'ah, the most important Muslim prayer of the week.

I plan to stand outside of our little Muslim gathering today at noon in solidarity and for protection.

If you know of Muslims or have a Muslim community, this would be an important time to reach out.

We are all stronger together.

Thanks for being open and revealing your courage to be yourself in a world that is swinging more toward intolerance lately. Our church was picketed again by those who "know" that God hates homosexuals and now the massive attack on Muslim places of worship in New Zealand.

Thank you both for sharing your stories.

Sometimes it takes major upheavals for us to really grow, learn, and challenge ourselves.

I'm also polyamorus, so don't feel like the two partners thing is weird! I don't have any real relationships right now, but I'm not exactly celibate either. I'm trying not to take anything too seriously, and just see how things develop organically.

Julie, I love the story you told! What a joyful moment. It makes me sad to read about the pain and distancing that brought you to that point, though I'm so glad you are connecting with new and more like-minded people.

I won't go into the long, twisted path that brought me into being with two partners. Suffice it to say that I feel you both in the hardships that come from people changing in their relationships.

What's been really hard for me is two friend break-ups from people I had long, long bonds with. The emotional fallout was harsh, but I'm finding that the newer friends in my life are people whose ethics and worldviews are more in sync with my own.

May we all connect with others who are kind, decent, like-minded people.

My situation is a little similar to yours, Dreamspirit, in that I have been in a relationship that began in 1973. Although we share the same house, the relationship seemed to end about eight years ago when my partner became increasingly distant from me, blamed me for not having sufficient financial means, became severely depressed and forgetful, and decided to move away. Currently her suitcase is in the garage, where she left it after nearly driving off a couple days ago.

The experience for me during all this was to become depressed and increasingly isolated. Although we used to entertain and go places, there became fewer invitations and I became increasingly reluctant to invite people to the house. This was because when we were around friends, my partner got one or two of them off to the side to relate her story, with a lot of tears and blaming of me, which did not lead to a pleasant experience .

Eventually I decided that I had to find a life of my own--my own friends and my own way to grow and become me. This is the part, Dreamspirit, that becomes similar to your experience. As I became more myself, the trans part of me emerged. Also the loving, caring part of me broadened and I discovered pleasure in getting to chat with people that I had formerly only nodded to. I also became quite immersed in social and organizational aspects of my church which did a lot to boost my self esteem.

The other day a gay man and I were talking with the pastor about who should make their announcement to the church before the other. He asked, "well, should we say ladies first?"
The three of us all had a good laugh--he in his pink suit with rose tie, me in my jeans and plaid shirt, and the pastor in his suit pants and gown. It was a particularly warm moment for me, when I felt valued for being myself and at home for being who I am.

Sometimes it takes a big change to help us find a new path to find out who we can be in life and to discover who we may be. Take some time and try to figure out who you can be, we can get behind you here whoever you may be. That is why we are here after all.
