Your dinner sounds amazing! I love ruttabega, but as you found out, it's a pain in the a$$ to deal with. My favorite is to boil it and mash it like potatoes (no butter or milk or anything), and then add a copious amount of black pepper to it. Mmmmm-mmmmmm!

Revamped my DH's Sunday fave Roast Beef & Potatoes. Tonight I did bison instead of beef. I had gotten a bunch of root veggies from an organic farmer at the Farmers Market this past week, so it was organic beets, carrots, pearl onions, turnips and rutabaga (the last two I had never tried before) instead of the white potatoes & baby carrots from a bag, like before.

We both agreed that we liked the turnips but the rutabaga wasn't impressive. Firstly, I'm sure I was doing something wrong because it was impossible to peel and it was a brute to even cut! I kind of liked the taste of it raw, but after roasting it really didn't have any flavor and was sort of tough?

But hey, it was a clean meal, my hubby said he'd enjoy it again (sans rutabaga) and we both tried something new!

Are "greens powders" clean eating?

I've been using sgnnutrition's "Emerald Balance" total nutrition drink mix in my smoothies. It claims to be "the ultimate whole body superfood!" w/ antioxidant power of 8-10 vegetables

Hi there,

My name is Melina, from Canada. I have been trying to lose weight a few months after I gave birth to my third child so I started around February 2010. I have lost 27 pounds since improving my diet eating as clean and healthy as possible. I would like to lose another 23 pounds. I am always trying to make improvements and learning new things. I don't eat a lot of red meat or dairy. I try to eat a lot of fish chicken, turkey beans and lentils.

My ultimate goal is to become a vegerian or a vegan but I am not there yet.

I will like to learn from all of you and keep eachother informed and motivated.

Glad to join you,
Melina :)

Another thing I just considered...why would you sous-vide an omelet in 13 minutes when you can cook it in a pan in like 2 minutes? Why would sous-vide be considered more "clean" than cooking in a pan?

I'm pretty sure ziplock brand bags are BPA free (I'd wager that most food-grade plastics are BPA free nowadays). They are pretty popular for sous-vide type cooking in home kitchens. However, boiling water is a bit too hot for sous-vide.

Chemicals from soft plastic leach into your food with temperature change, especially when boiling because of the intensity of the heat...much healthier to cook in pans and skillets minus the plastic.

A friend gave me a neat idea for quick healthy breakfasts!!

Take a ziploc FREEZER bag, put in your eggs (or for me one egg and 3 whites), veggies, cheese, meat (whatever YOU eat in an omelet). Close up the bag with very little air in it and drop it into a pot of boiling water for 13 minutes!

Ziploc bag omelet! Made as clean as you want it to be! Mine this morning had some farm fresh eggs, peppers, onions and jalapenos in it! Actually I made up 7 of them! One for each morning of the week! Now I have breakfast ready (just have to heat them) and I know EVERYTHING that is in them!

Acorn Squash - I had the BEST I've ever had Fri. PM.
I usually cook it in the oven, & never manage the right amount of time--either not cooked through, or dried, or something.

This time I cut the whole thing into 3x4" pieces & put them in a glass bowl w/ a bit of water on the bottom. Then I covered it & placed the whole thing in the microwave for 11-15 min. (checked it at 11 min & removed some done pieces).
It was easy, delicious, sweet & quick! I didn't add a single other thing and loved it! (ie. no salt, no cinnamon, no butter, no brown sugar!)

I find it funny how I am slowly getting everything changed over to clean food and have been doing good. But the one time I have a processed item I hate the way it tastes and gives me a stomach ache. Funny how that works LOL

Rinse quinoa under cold running water and drain. Bring 2 cups water to a boil. Stir in 1 1/3 cups quinoa and a pinch of salt into water. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, until quinoa is tender and all the liquid is absorbed. It should be lightly and fluffy.

PLEASE don't take offense, but I was reading today in the Reader's Digest (Nov.2010) that with all the warnings out there, we are guaranteed to be in danger of dying of SOMETHING!

Please think of life in moderation or balance!

...will a microwave kill me? - doubtful
...will we get brain cancer from cell phones? my dh thinks so
...does everything that goes into our mouths affect chemical changes? YES! Our bodies are a very unique chemical unit.

Think of the changes you want to make for health, and do so a little bit at a time. I for one am moving "single ingredient" foods to the top of my list of things to eat!

I got so excited recently when I found quinoa at our local grocery store.
We used to buy it at our grocery stores in Alaska all the time but I hadn't found it here for some time when I moved here.

Today at Krogers in the health food section, I picked up an all natural sea salt with no additives called Red Monkey seasoning grinder all natural sea salt. Most of the other sea salts, like Hains, have additives to prevent caking. You can see that this sea salt is granular and the container's top is a grinder.

I closed the article when the screen went dark saying it was loading a picture. I was hoping it wasn't a virus. I never used a microwave (or owned one), but my sister said that the newer ones were safer-that they had gotten the bugs out.

Hey, team!

Yep, I know I've been quiet on these forums lately, but I hope to get back on here more frequently!

Many people are asking for tips on making clean eating easier. 2 things:

1. Preplan out your menu the night before.
2. Precook as much food as possible.

Seriously! Preplanning and precooking will allow you to incorporate more and more clean eating into your daily menu.

When we go into the day without a plan or without the food we need on hand, we will typically grab processed foods. A bag of chips is easy, right?! So use things like your crockpot and get creative with spices and seasonings. I'm bringing in alot of Asian flavors into my cooking --Wasabi paste and Chili paste, for example-- and am amazed at how these simple additions change everything!

Keep it simple and have that plan in place.

Morning! I have ordered the Recharged book and the Cook book, but they have not arrived so I am trying to read posts here. I eat pretty clean now but tend to eat out of boredom and I need an exercise strategy. Just need to lose 20 pounds, tighten what I have and build up my strength.

FITBUG, have you tried Mrs. Dash's spice blends. They are made of only spices with my salt or chemicals. I find they are great if you are learning how to use and mix spices together. Hope that helps.

Welcome Heather!!!

I need advice...pls help me.
I have been eating good and take vitamins, fiber pills and all. I have been feeling like I am going to explode...my tummy is full of air. Why? I feel so fat! I am not sure what is wrong... it has been off and on for 3 weeks. Thank you!!

Hello everyone, my name is Heather and I'm new to this team. I've been eating clean for about 8 weeks and I love it. My only problem is that sometimes I'm not sure how to season food so I usually just eat it plain or with some pepper. Any suggestions for salmon? I'll be cooking that tomorrow for dinner. Thanks!

I must have the same recipe. I was going to try making the relish with less sugar. Maybe 3 cups, but if there is a better choice, I too would like to know!

Hello, Any advice on sweet pickle relish my husband has been requesting it. All the ones I've seen have HFCS. I will be making some this weekend, but the recipe calls for so much sugar 5 cups to 10 cups of shredded zucchini. Any suggestions. Thanks.
