there is a lot of evidence pointing to something called "SIPE" swimming induced pulmonary edema. they are looking at constrictive wetsuits, prerace hydration, increased heart rate at the initation of the race as things that contribute.

we had a drowning in early august in a local tri. very sad and hard to watch. 34 year old male, first tri. best friend, wife and 2 young daughters on the beach while fellow triathletes and specators performed cpr. i still cry about it.

i think some are from undiagnosed heart conditions effected with the increased cardiac demand at the start of a race.

i think time trial starts vs mass starts would help. there has to be an end to this.

I wonder if it carries over from the fact that some research indicates that marathons may damage the heart. Half Ironmans certainly more than equal out to a marathon. Researching marathon athletes is just cleaner than triathletes since it's only one event to assess the impact.

Another athlete died a couple weekends ago during the age group nationals for the olympic distance.

From what I've been reading, it seems like the swim is the piece where athletes are most likely to die compared to the other parts of the tri.

Very sad. I wonder if she had some existing heart condition that was unknown.

Yeah, the fact that she was an experienced racer who had really properly prepared... well, there's just no peace in that for us for protecting ourselves.

Very, very sad

Molly- I'm a Buckeye (Ohio)

"I'm a running contradiction....I am a runner and I am lazy. I know that running allows me to enjoy my down time to a greater level. I am a runner first, lazy second. For me, these aren't mutually exclusive terms. Without one, I couldn't enjoy the other."

Thank you so much Bob Schwartz (I Run, Therefore I Am- Nuts!) for this lovely, funny insight into my life.
