I absolutely love my 310XT!!! I use it exactly the same way that MLMILLER77 explained, complete with the quick release kit and all.

One important thing to realize is that during the swim, the unit will really only collect GPS data when it is placed under your swim cap. If it is on your wrist, the data will be inaccurate because the GPS doesn't work under water. I was terrified at first about putting it in my swim cap (for fear of my $300+ toy ending up at the bottom of the lake), but it seems to stay up there just fine.

Oh and I love the little tune it sings at the end of your multisport workout! :)

Enjoy! :)

If you have the quick release kit for it (sold separately).

Ok, either I've not read enough of the manual yet, or mine is different - I wasn't aware that you could separate the device from the armband?

I've been using a 310xt for over a year now, and I love it. (I named mine Conrad.) Conrad #1 stopped acquiring satellites after 6 months, but Garmin was excellent about replacing him for me. Conrad #2 has been perfect.

I'm kind of a dork. I read manuals cover to cover, and I did this for the 310xt. It helped a lot, learning about all the cool stuff you can do with this watch. It's not a bad read, I swear.

I also have the foot pod, cadence sensor, and the quick release kit. I highly recommend ALL three of those.

Here's what I do at a triathlon:

- Put the HR strap on (it's water proof, so you can wear it for the whole race), then I put the wrist band on (without Conrad attached), set him up for multisport with transitions, and stick him in my swim cap at the back of my head (no need for plastic bag, he's waterproof).

- I can feel the start button through my swim cap, so I keep my finger on that at the start line and push it when my wave begins. (puts 310xt into "other" mode, which is your swim)

- Push the lap button when I cross the swim exit (puts the 310xt into T1 mode)

- I leave my swim cap on until I get my wetsuit off, then take off my cap and goggles and I click Conrad into the wrist band so I don't loose him while I finish up in T1.

- Push lap as I run my bike out of T1 (puts 310xt into bike mode)

- After catching my breath and settling into my race pace, I click Conrad into the bike mount so I can keep an eye on my speed and distance data fields easier. I don't watch HR, I just go by RPE.

- As I near the bike finish, I click Conrad back into my wrist band and hit lap as I run the bike in (puts 310xt into T2 mode)

- Get the bike stuff off, the run stuff on, and as I run out, I hit lap again (puts 310xt into run mode)

- During the run, I keep an eye on my HR at this point and pace myself.

- Click lap one last time as I cross the finish line (don't forget to smile for the photo), then Conrad sings me a little workout complete tune!

Have fun with your new toy!

i DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE 310XT, BUT I HAVE AN OLD SCHOOL GARMIN (301) AND I JUST LOVE IT. I USE IT FOR BIKING, RUNNING AND X-COUNTRY SKIING, AND IT IS A GREAT TRAINING TOOL. i CAN CHANGE THE SCREENS WHEN I DO INTERVAL TRAINING, SO IT CAN TRACK MY SPEED FOR EACH INTERVAL. i ALSO LOVE WWW.GARMINCONNECT.COM FOR DOWNLOADING MY DATA AND REVIEWING IT. LUCKY YOU FOR WINNING IT! CONGRATS!

I won a Garmin 310XT with the heart rate monitor this evening at our WIN for KC Triathlon Finisher's party. Just wondering if anyone else here has one, or has used one, that can give me some inside scoop or tips.
