Well, I didn't have to continue shopping. I won a Garmin 310XT with the heart rate monitor at the finishers party for the WIN for KC Triathlon. I was THRILLED. Now I'm enjoying learning how to use all of the features!

Ray Maker is a triathlete with an incredible blog. He's a huge gadget guy and reviews all kinds of stuff thoroughly, as in every single possible feature a product has, he'll try it.

He's reviewed both of those GPSes. Check it out: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/p/product-revie

I personally love my 310xt. I swim with mine all the time, and I race with it too. I don't find it gets in my way at all. I love downloading my data and comparing my workouts/races.

Have fun shopping!

I have the Garmin 310XT and love it. It has yet to let me down. It is good to 500 meters in water but I've been swimming indoors so there is no use for it. All it really does in water is give you GPS distance. I have not had an issue with the heart rate monitor. You have to wear it snug but I don't notice it when it's on. I've even used it during personal training sessions just to get a heart rate reading. I also use the pods for my bike and the foot pod when I run indoors. I'd recommend getting them if you ever do any workouts indoors.

People wear HRM's and GPS devices for a variety of different reasons. I'm like Motoguy. I never wear one when I'm racing, because, well, I'm racing! What's a HRM or GPS going to do for me? Tell me to speed up or slow down? I should be going as hard as I can, and from my training, i should know how hard i can push myself without looking at a watch.
But I love my Garmin for training. I have a very old school one, the 301. It has a HRM, and is great for biking or running. I download the data to www.Garminconnect.com, and get all kinds of useless data, as well as fun maps. I even used it for my ski training this past winter.
I would go to a few different websites and read the reviews on a few different sites. I'll bet there are even some triathlon specific sites that have reviews of both the products you're considering. Read some of those, and then make your decision. Sounds like you deserve a reward for all your hard work! Keep it up!

I'm pretty happy with my 310XT. I don't swim with it, since it's not fully waterproof for that purpose.... plus i heart rate monitors always slide down... and being from a competitive swimming background, I generally just hate swimming with a watch.

I also find when racing it's not worth the time ot mess with putting on the watch and such. A good runner knows his race pace and what his body can do.

BUT, for trianing on the bike and running it works very well. Better reception and faster GPS lock than the 305. Great backlight. IT seems a little more sensitive and accurate too.

Overall I can recommend it. I also recommend getting the cycling pod with the speed and cadence readout.

I love my gadgets too! They are wonderful motivators for me. I am still using the old Garmin 305 so I was looking around for a new gadget and after reading the reviews on Amazon for the TGT I dismissed it because some of the reviews of the GPS were poor- very long time to connect and dropped connection frequently. I am still deciding which GPS device to get now that I have realized my next one will be water-resistant like the TGT.

Ok, I'm kinda a gadget geek, BUT, I have found that because I enjoy using gadgets and taking advantage of the information they provide me, I have become stronger, and better, and more efficient at my workouts in general, and my running and biking specifically.

I've been eye-balling the Timex Ironman Global Trainer (with a heart rate monitor) for some time, BUT - I'm also big on supporting a home-town company (Garmin) - and like the reputation that Garmin has.

I'm in the market to purchase one of these devices in the next six months, and would like to hear real-life experiences from any of you that have used, or own either of them - to help me decide which of these will ultimately be my gift to myself. The reason I'm considering these two particular models is my interest in, and participation in Triathlons, and these models are geared towards multi-sport activities.

Any info is greatly appreciated!
