Sprint Triathlon, Olympic Triathlon, Half-Ironman and Full Ironman are all in my future.

Once I get this being able to swim and run nonsense sorted obviously.

Once I do an Ironman, i'll be getting the tattoo. My first tattoo. To me all the races are a huge accomplishment. But to me, I'll EARN that tattoo only by doing the full ironman...

Thanks for the input. I didn't know that Ironman was Ford's branding of hte event. Just goes to prove you learn something every day you live.

Now I know! I agree that calling it a "Half Ironman" is much easier understood then 70.3.

Irish 98- A friend of mine competed in the Lake Placid Ironman last weekend and said it was a great experience.

Actually, "Ironman" is simply a trademark that means that Ford sponsors the race. It has become synonymous with the long-distance triathlon. There are other long course races that are not "Ironman" (they usually call them "iron distance"). Ironman 70.3 again are sponsored by Ford and are an entity unto themselves (I've done 2 of them, and a 3rd next month). I actually just got home from volunteering at Ironman Lake Placid. It was a phenomenal experience. Say what you want about marketing, but they put on a great event, and treat the athletes really well.

I have never done either event but know people that have. Based on what I saw, I would have to agree with your "log day; really long day" statement.

I think it has to do with marketing, I enjoy this distance and feel Half Ironman explains it easier then saying 70.3. you could call it a long day and a ironman a really long day

Last week in Racine they ran an "Ironman" 70.3 triathlon.

I am looking for opinions on the name. In my mind, the name Ironman has always meant 2.4 mile swim - 112 mile bike - 26.2 mile run. By making the race half as long and still calling it an "Ironman" even with the 70.3 trailer has a different implication than calling it a "Half-Ironman". After all, we don't call a true Ironman race an Ironman 140.6 do we? I've heard of a similar phenomenom with Half-Marathons calling themselves a Marathon 13.1 even though I haven't seen one myself yet.

This is not meant to take anything away from the athlete that runs the shorter difference race, you are all still great athletes. I just think it minimizes the Ironman race.

Opinions anyone?
