Miami Gal, I had the opportunity to speak with a woman from a tri-specific store on the weekend. She suggested that I dress exactly as you have outlined, adding a bra under the swim suit or tri suit for extra support during the run. She said I should try it out only a few times before an actual event and not train in anything other than a swim suit because the chlorine in the pool will break down the fibres in anything but a swim suit.

So I have a question kind of on this topic. I'm doing my first sprint triathlon in july. Until I know that I will do this again, I don't want to buy new clothing if I can help it.

Here's what I currently wear to workout:

one piece swimsuit www.landsend.com/pp/Solid1LegScoopne

To run and bike, I wear these pedal shorts... they look longer in this picture than they really are... they come right below my knees when running and above knees when biking

Now, here's what I'm thinking and I would love to get advice and thoughts.

For the swim, I'd just wear my swimsuit.

For the bike, I would keep my swimsuit on (obviously) and throw on my pedal shorts.

For the run (and this is where it gets complicated), I need a sports bra... more than what is in my swimsuit. So for the race, do people suggest I wear the sports bra underneath my swimsuit?

That sounds a little tight, although I don't think I have ever had that problem!

Thanks for all of your ideas. I tried some tri tops on tonight. I struggled to get the bra-styled top on. The zippered, full-length top with build-in bra was much easier to put on and take off. How tight should a tri top fit? It really crushed my girls. It wasn't uncomfortable, but it isn't remotely attractive and I think I should wear petals underneith. Is that too tight?

I think you'll find a sports bra a bit uncomfortable to wear while swimming, especially if it's made of cotton - it will probably start to sag after a couple of wearings in a pool.

As others here have suggested, a swim suit top or a tri specific sports bra style top would probably be your best bet.

And to answer your question - yes I have worn my tri shorts and sports bra style swim suit top while doing a swim workout and also while playing underwater hockey. Actually you SHOULD wear your tri clothes while doing your all of your workouts in order to make sure they feel good for your race. You don't need to wear them every time, but you should wear them for a few workouts.

I too have worn a sports bra under my tri shirt, and as a swim top. Currently I am wearing a generic REI sports bra made of wicking, fast-drying poly-something, after experimenting with a few other sports bras. The key for me is finding the bra with the flattest fit, so that my underarms don't chafe, especially when I am wearing a wet suit. I figure the sports bra covers way more than a bikini top would, so if anyone wants to chuckle at me, let them! I am comfy and secure and protected!

Zoot makes a bra/swim top for just that thing! I have one and I usually wear it under my other tri top for support but I have used it alone for just swimming.

I'm very short waisted too, although I generally can find one pice athletic suits that fit. But, they do make athletic 2 piece suits. Check out swimoutlet.com. I especially like their grab bags (last years styles for cheap). I've gotten 3 grab bag suits and love them all. I know you said that you don't want to shop online, but for $20, I think it's worth the risk. I will admit though, that I looked funny (and closely) at a woman in the pool the other day to see if she was wearing a bra or a bikini top. I'm sure there's not really much difference, but I would never do it. Good luck!

Have you ever worn a bra top and tri shorts as a regular swim suit outside of just race days? I am short waisted and have a broad back and as a result I'm having a dickens of a time finding a one-piece athletic swim suit that fits me properly. To fit my back, every suit is too long. Tankinis lead to a lot of drag in the water and are no fun at all for Aquafit. None of the shops here sell short one-piece suits. I really don't want to shop for petite-length suits online. I want to try things on til I find something that fits, feels comfortable and looks half-decent. I wonder if a bra top is my solution.
