running my first 5K w/o stopping! I almost did it once, but had to do a 30 second walk near the end. Today I didn't stop once and feel I could have gone a bit farther, but walked a long cool down instead.
Definately happy!

Helen Congatulations on your new PR! That is so excellent. I am inspired. Next November I am toying with the idea of a half marathon - so I am going to that training program I see mentioned on this thread.

I am training for my first sprint of the season June 6th, got hooked on them last summer. Then,,,,if all goes well I want to do an olympic in the fall, then the half marathon.

This was a great motivator for me, thanks to you all

Helen... That is EXACTLY the plan I have on my menu bar! I was ahead of the game before this sickness. I had been up to 8 miles on my long runs before my 10K.

AND... emoticon emoticon emoticon on your time on the HM! That is....

It's official...1:59.33! And I think the course is actually a tad bit longer than 13.1. First time under 2:00, and like I said earlier, a fairly hilly course. Tennis, still lots of time to train for an August 1/2. Just be smart, listen to your body, and get those long runs done. Do you have a training plan you follow? I really like Hal Higdon's plan. (available for free online)Lots of cross training which carries over great for us triathletes.

Helen - That is GREAT! Definitely let us know the official time.

Lynn - Don't worry about being sick. You have plenty of time to come back up to speed. I was in bed sick for 10 straight days early to mid January with a HM at the end of February. I did fine at the race. You will too!

That is excellent, Helen! Congratulations!

I'm doing the Chicago Rock & Roll marathon Aug. 1st. Been down with illness and have had a major set back. Ran today for first time in two weeks and it did not go well! Legs are still weak and I"m still "raspy!" But I felt GREAT afterwards. What gives? I walked part of it as I didn't want to push myself. This THING keeps hanging on! Bummer.

Excited for you though and your celebration! I hope to be sub 2 1/2 hours on mine. At this point...my first half...I'll be happy to just finish really.

Today's running of The Lake Minnetonka 1/2 marathon was the 30th anniversary of the race...so it definitely was going on when you lived in Excelsior. The course is scenic...but hilly.
And I will add to the thread that Happiness is...finally PR'ing in a half marathon! I think I broke the 2 hour mark today. I'll know in a bit when the official results come out! Woohoo!

Good luck Helen!

I used to live in Excelsior and know Wayzata well! There might not have been a half marathon when I lived there '93-'96, but then I wouldn't have paid much attention. I didn't do any form of exercise let alone tri training and running races. Now it's an addiction! :D

Let us know how it goes!

Netty, sorry to hear you didn't get to do the training. And an IM would be horrible without the right training. Hope your brother finished just as strong as he started.
No IMMOO (Wisconsin) or any IM in my future. I enjoy too many other activities to train so much for one event. No marathons in my future either. Maybe it's the ADD in me to spend that much time on one activity! I prefer the short stuff.
Now if I can just PR in my 1/2 marathon tomorrow! Wayzata to Excelsior.

Yeah, Helen. I might even fly up to WI to cheer you on, or at least cowbell you.

What happened? I thought you were signed up for this race...your first IM.
I do agree, though. It is so inspiring to cheer at an Ironman Race. And the athletes appreciate it so much. I have cheered at IM Madison for the past 3 years. It's an amazing event to witness. My husband always loses his voice because he's yelling so much. I just use a lot of cowbell!
