I am like shorty, out in the sticks, but I have found a bike club that meets about a 20 min bike ride away. so it is a start

We've got a great local tri club here as well. Something to keep in mind with tri clubs: Some people are diehards, and others compete for the fun of it. The members tend to go the spectrum. So don't feel intimidated if you find one in you area--Check it out!

That's great!

I would love to join a tri club, but I live in a pretty rural area, so I'm not sure there are any around here. Maybe I should do some extensive searching though, I could just be missing it.

That is amazing!
Nothing like that around here.
I hope the other Sparkers that read your post consider shopping at local Running store and local bike shop.
No local shops = no sponsors or clubs.

A month ago, I joined my local tri club for annual fee of $45 for a family membership and let me tell you I have already gotten my $$ worth. In the short month, they have put together a mentoring group for newbies like me, have a free masters swimming clinic (monthly), and I just attended our monthly meeting tonight where they invited a local bike shop (who also sponsors the tri club) to put on a clinic between road bikes and tri bikes and what think about when riding, purchasing, tips on riding, accessories and the how to be fitted to your bike. They were so generous with their time and knowledge. In two weeks, they are sponsoring a running clinic with one of our local running stores. And this is just the tip of the iceberg it seems. I was a little intimidated to join at first, but it is like "one big happy family" that wants you to enjoy the sport they love. So excited about this new adventure!!!
