You'd probably need to have a gas lock or something on them, because the fermentation makes a lot of carbon dioxide and will shatter bottles if it gets too much pressure buildup. The only success I've had without a gas lock was making elderflower champagne in old soda bottles, because the plastic stretches out to around twice its size when the pressure builds up.

Neil- Oh I am dreaming and planning, garden this year!
I look forward r hearing how your turns out.
Yes...I feel quite lost. I find I dream often about beautiful gardens. I think I am nurtured by gardens, all kinds. So this drought hit me hard.
Hopefully we will recover.

Glad- Wow! I had no idea...I am researching this! Thanks!

Mauima - we bought a gallon of unpasturized, organic apple juice from Whole Foods. My BF made it, but I think he just added some yeast, then divided it up into two clean 2 liter bottles, screwed on the caps and then we waited. It was delicious!

Sorry to hear about the drought Maui. I would be lost without my garden.

My plan is to use this year as a trial. If the wine turns out OK I'll get a few more of the fermenting bottles and stagger the production, so I'll have a fresh batch ready every couple of months.

Neil-Count me in too! Neil glad to hear you are still gardening. The currant wines sounds amazing!
I too am still gardening, although we have just had 4 years of drought, and last summer I had no garden. Keeping my hopes up for this spring.

Something new...Since you were 'decking' I also have converted over to 100% my own bread goods, I grind my own flour from a vast assortment of grains, I use only my own wild rye starter, fun and healthy and Yummy!

Glad- what type of cider? what kind of apples? Ah...extra fridge in the garage. we need to do this! I have a freezer already. Fridge is next!

We started some cider last spring and had to wait 5-6 months before it was ready to drink. It was kind of hard to wait, but worth it. It helped that we have a refrigerator in the garage and left it to ferment in there, so I wasn't looking at it every day.

I hope the wine turns out. Enjoy!

It's not exercise related. Those of you who knew me when I was here last will know that I've got a pretty decent garden at home. We've got plenty of red and black currants, raspberries, strawberries, plums etc. In the past I've struggled to come up ways for using them all and usually end up making tons of jams and cordials, most of which end up getting given away. But last October my wife got me a wine making kit for my birthday. So I'm attempting to make some red currant wine and some black currant wine. If that works, next year I'll branch out and try some of the other fruit. Unfortunately for a person like me who is not very patient, it take 6 months to mature. But when it's ready I promise to bring along a few bottles to the deck so you can all sample it ;)
