The smoke hasn't been too bad the past few days, thankfully! And I've been getting better sleep the past few days as well (despite the heat!), so that's a good thing too!

I was looking forward (partly) to CrossFit today, and when I got there it was a ghost town. Left when noone showed up by 4:35 (class was scheduled for 4:30) and then found an e-mail in my "updates" tab in g-mail that they were cancelling the Friday afternoon and Saturday classes, sent 2 days ago! emoticon Well, I fixed it so those e-mails will go to my primary tab...doh!

We'd love to see you in the fall...the hot air balloon races are in September, my favorite Reno event, but I guess that's not quite fall! Anyway, I'm also hoping we may get back east to visit some friends in Maine sometime around then too...

Larry's asked my to roast some asparagus...gotta get to it!

Glad Mom's visit was nice.
Yes, air quality...I had a hard time this morning on my walk and had to come home early. Our ozone and particulate is super high due to heat and fire...bleh.

Layoffs...ack...You know I get this! So sorry...yes...these concerns really play on sleep.

I am trying to keep concerns at bay...and live here and now. Sure tricky at times...often...luckily my garden requires so much attention it really helps.
Here we are, both of us home...lol...and Soooooooooooo much to do! I guess I am one really good work-maker.

Hugs my friend...you are still on my list to hit up soon. Maybe fall??
(Yes...that's soon...) haha...

Sleep...really staying on schedule...by 4 or 5 AM...it gets tricky. But with all this heat, its a great time to get up and take advantage.
Smoke...hope it gets under control soon.

Mom had a nice visit, we went to the lake on Saturday, and the park on Sunday. She left right before the smoke came in!

Still working on sleep...had a hard time falling asleep last night despite getting to bed earlier (before 9!). They laid off 3 more from our department yesterday...just waiting for the next ax to fall is putting everyone on edge!

Oh...same here! Cannot sleep in at all...daylight and I am awake. We have super dark drapes...but no good. I can tell when it's daylight...and no matter what time I go to bed...up I get.

Enjoy Mom's visit.

Mom's here until Monday morning...

Got to bed a bit late the past couple of nights, so I'm not quite at 7 hrs sleeping! It's hard to sleep in, as much as I'd like to, so I need to get to bed earlier!

welp- I got off kilter the last few nights...lol...
slept in a hotel bed...air was dry...woke a ton...meh.
Tonight I ought to sleep like a baby.

Yes...I try to have a routine...that's what works best. Without routine...my brain goes to mush apparently.
But...I did a great job keeping up with my water while hiking these last few days...the commitment paid off. No soreness...feel great. :)

How long will mom stay?

I have to put my supplements in a pill keeper, and still forget some days...mostly on the weekend when my routine is gone.

I'm going to stick to trying to hit around 8 hrs sleep a night. I seem to be able to manage at least 7 most nights, but I feel like I do better if it's closer to 8 than 7 hrs!

8 hours...good for you!
I have been trying hard this week too...as planned. I am having a hard time staying asleep once the sun comes up...lol...(maybe it's my farmer gene). Ihave been getting to bed on time, in an attempt to compensate...all we can do is try.

I had my first BLT for lunch yesterday. Yum. On sourdough bread...avocado too...
and last night I oven roasted tomatoes to add to a summer squash , onion, garlic, pasta toss for supper. The OR tomatoes...'made' the dish.
Summer eating...yum.

Seems like you'd be teaching organic farming...but hope you get a lot our of the training! They do grow lots of stuff in Salinas.

I put up a little fence around what is left of the onions, I'm not sure it will be much of a deterent to the varmints but at least I can say I tried! The cage is still keeping them out, I have a few sun gold tomatoes I need to harvest, the purple basil and dill are looking good, and I have a few more green roma tomatoes on that vine, so exciting!

I was 2 minutes shy of a full 8 hours sleeping last night, not bad!

I've been doing a meditation "app" on my laptop lately, headspace.com, but it's been finicky the past couple of mornings...this morning is no exception! That "wheel of doom" spinning circle that makes you think it's going to come up...then nothing! Life's tough when your meditation stresses you out, right? emoticon I need to be more "zen" about it I guess. Yesterday when I got home it worked fine. So maybe it's just a morning thing?

I feel like I got a pretty good night's sleep last night, got to bed a little earlier (before 9pm rather than after) and we had the shutters closed so no morning light to wake me up early! It really makes a difference.

Wine, we have been measuring for a few months now, it does make a difference.

Kay- Yes..Sleep. I can really tell when it starts to slip...in so many ways, I just don't feel good and so much becomes difficult.
I had wine one day last week...and wow...really through me for a loop. I had to think about it, for awhile to figure it out. Wine always needs to be measured for me, but if I am already sleep deprived...really a bad idea.
So yes...sleep...a must. Because I have to be able to have a glass of wine, right?

Patient advocacy..yep...seems to be on my to-do list. Life. But thank you for mentioning about taking good care of me. This is a trick and I discovered I was holding the tension in my jaw. Likely that pesky neck problem I can develop...so a massage is on the list. I have one 'in the bank' waiting...so I should take care of that this week. Thanks Kay.

Today was really fun. We ate beautiful food the kids and hubby made. We played a board game about farming beans...haha
And then triple header Ladder Ball out back.
Hummingbirds, garden standing watch, giggling and the weather cooperated. ;)

You ARE a great patient advocate, Maui, between your son and your neighbor....Wow. That is a lot of stress too...maybe you can get another massage soon? Take care of you too!

Regarding sleep....I'm going to make that a goal too, I really need to be getting more some days, it's so much easier to handle the day when I've gotten enough the night before!

Howdy you two!

Been a crazy couple of weeks...I just now checked this thread...and lookie...activity!

Kay- yes life does happen and get in the way often it seems.

Snow! Yay...here is a fabulous place to keep working at our list.

I have been trying to get my garden independent as it heads into 'high season' so if I need to be gone a day or 2, it won't die.
Slow going, but going well.
My hard part right now is my good friend and neighbor across the street. She is very ill and been going in and out of hospital. Snow...you know who I mean. Its especially hard this time. Since before Leilani's wedding. Breathing discomfort, severe anxiety, digestive system is shutting down. She is on;y 77. Anyhow...her family is acting weird and convinced it's llain her head. OMG...still is causing such HUGE stress unlike anything I have ever experinced. They (Her son and daughter) are even yelling at her and threatening to put her in a 'home' if she doesn't 'straighten up' . OMG...yelling at her!!! Anyhow, this poor woman txt's me asking for help and "Please take me to the hospital". I have...twice. Anyhow...she has had an infection in her colon, and more...NUTS. So, I have been spending hours a day trying to 'counsel' the family to take Mom seriously. The hospital says I am being a good patient advocate which is encouraging...and to bring her whenever she needs help. Maybe the family will calm down as they address their own fears , anger etc and having to help.
My goodness...right? (we've been friends and neighbors since 1976) sad.
I was at teh hospital again last night with her. :(
Duh...I have not been even in my right mind to notice this thread was active.

OK...MY GOAL this week...is to manage my time and emotions. Take care of me.
Go to bed on time!
Get my chores done first.
Drink my water.
Take time to read.

Whew...deep breath,

Hey, LMK if you come up, you have my number?

Sounds like it's heating up, we're headed into high 90's up here...definitely have to turn the AC on in the evenings!

Digging in the heat this morning, adding good dirt and amendments to a very ignored landscape.... Planted 2 crepe myrtle bush, another waiting for its area to be dug( EDH IS ALL GRANITE!) took out things that were old and ugly, purple fountains to dance in the evening breezes.... A drip system soon to be perfected along with the new " babies".
Firework festival yesterday at Cameron Park ( at the lake ). Went to a concert at Town Center and danced to the Beatles music with gym friends..... Well- back outside, in a couple of days they forecast 106 temos- I'm planning indoor catch up stuff!

I was just being my happy joking self , you know..... I remember this thread....
Doctor appointments scheduled all over the place Maui- LOVE our new dr- UCDAVIS System rocks!!! I have my physical and all those tests I used to avoid lined up- they took care of referrals and appointments! I like that!
Moving forward with Bob's specialists - the Dr is on the right page and pushing hard for all that we need to do👍
Have a great Sunday you guys... Nice to hear how your doing! Can we all meet for that dinner and wine???? Please count us in! We have friends in Reno that want us to visit, just sayin.....***SNOW***

food is the best medicine, to paraphrase Hippocrates (I had to look that up!). I think our bodies do respond better to whole foods prepared simply than to those overly processed and preserved kinds. And if that's how you eat, they end up tasting better too...but it can be hard to wean off the twinkies, if that's what you're used to!

It's going to be a cooking/gardening day again for me, and hopefully I can get out on the trail before the rain hits!

Kay- I understand about the weight issue and that not being he top priority right now. You must be making muscle and therefore should weigh more. Being fit, strong, able...gosh...that's will always trump skinny.

fore sure...once we can identify a plan...we will talk...via email/phone. And we will choose what best for you and Larry. we have a lot going on with wedding plans, my older son, hubby retirement adjustments...lol...

Food, zero processed...yep. Def the way to go. Hubby just had his physical and those 5 pages of labs...every single one...perfect. I continue to be so suspect of processed food. I feed him zero. Over the holidays, he had lots of work snacks etc...and his labs were off. I got hi to really try and eat only what I give him, and make sure I give him enough so he doesn't feel the need to snack. His labs ca back to perfect. Doc had LOTS of questions..."How do you do this? What are you eating?"

Of course...no proof...but this is now the story for us both.
Hmmmmmm.....

Yep, I'm loving my CrossFit progress! And it seems like I'm pushing harder, and getting so much encouragement from my fellow CrossFitters, they really make it fun!

It would be great to see you up here this summer! Just LMK when, maybe I'll have something growing in my garden too....I can only hope. Still a little too soon to plant the warmer weather plants, so I'm holding off on tomatoes, peppers, etc. Soon...

Logging food really works....I'm not doing it, but right now I'm OK with where I am, even if it's a few pounds higher than my "goal" weight, I'm not stressing, since I'm more focused on fitness at the moment. If I keep improving on my lifting, I don't really care if I'm higher weight than I was a few years ago...I'm also just trying to work on building better habits around food, slowly moving out the more processed food, and planning and making more myself.

I don't really have a specific goal right now either, except just to keep working the goals I have set already! That may be enough!

Kay- (sorry for the delay) Gosh...how could we get so busy eh? Anyhow...not raised beds in teh front, but new ones outback. And the milling has not yet happened...the arborist has pneumonia secondary to flu. Ack!
Hubby and I dug up half of the raining lawn area back there...lol...and have a new area for garden. We will add new raised beds in 2 major areas...honest...I am trying to work on photos. I'll email you. ;)
(Not today...raining! )

I am enjoying following your CF progress, PR's and all. double unders...I may have to purchase a jump rope since I have yet to locate mine. It has been many years. I like this idea though.

With hubby retired...I hope we can swing by this summer up your way, (We do owe you a dinner and some wine.) ;)
We have some we can bring. :) Veggies too...maybe during tomato season.

So...goals...I have not posted goals for awhile...I am logging food! This always seems to help me. Seriously...why can I not get by without logging...I do not understand this...but such is life. So...I am logging and it's helping.
I am drinking my no sugar cranwater to help with fluid retention, this is also helping.
I will have another massage next week...I have definitely made progress with stretching since doing this! Who'd have thought? I didn't know...

OK...time to start cooking lunch! lol...Hubby here....I have t to feed him on time! hahaha...he gets hungry. (He's lost 14 lbs since he was home. No work snacks...)

Raised beds in the front? I've seen some pretty cool front yard gardens, but then it all depends on how the neighbors like it! (not that that should matter, but sometimes they put a damper on them, so I hear!)

We are supposed to get a little snow later in the week, just an inch or so, but then last time that was predicted we ended up with a foot! So who knows?

I already posted this on the deck, but another PR today, 205 deadlift! I'm just feeling so strong these days! I guess 2 rest days in a row this weekend was a good thing, all due to the rain and taxes!

Kay- We have had so much more rain than I expected! Wonderful. Are you getting more snow???I hope I hope...
Some of the reports are conflicting...looks like the snow is high elevation only.

Oh Oh...big hoop might just be the assist I needed...haha...It sounds super fun to me.

Your pull ups is award worthy. Fabulous...and what it must do for your confidence...Love it. That's going to be some serious help for rock climbing, biking and more.

We headed up for spur of the moment trip to Woodland. The traffic was icky...and really wet at times on 80...ack! But it was otherwise a great day. Son was super happy to see us and with no doc appt, it was relaxing...more of just a visit. Quite nice. He is so appreciative. Of course I learned a lot as usual...he is quite the resource for info we don't really have time to ferret out.

Today I have been (due to rain), working on end of year reports, cooking ahead for this week and visiting with hubby. We sue have missed a lot of that over these many years of work. Its nice ...
He got a couple calls for jobs already...lol...we will see if he stays retired.

Goals this week are get in more cardio...we are hoping the milling might happen, so we can move forward on the front yard project. We are planning on building more raised beds! So, prep work includes digging, moving some mulch I laid last fall, soil mixing with compost prep...plenty of strength training. Hope it works as planned...my baby tomatoes, peppers and eggplants are ready. :)

We clouded up yesterday, and have had a few sprinkles today...hope you got some of that before it headed up here! No skiing for me today with this weather....but I did get my taxes done! Since I owed, I was not in any hurry.

The basketball was fun! emoticon They had a big hoop and regular ball, and had put lines on the floor for us to start from. I made the first 3 baskets right away, so then did my pull-ups and dips (IIRC), and went back to the next line. we were backing up each try so the 4th line was farther than I could accurately hit the basket, so I ended up running for the rest of the workout between tries! I did get so close though...

And yesterday I did 5 unassisted pull-ups! I even got 2 in a row during the workout! Would not have happened except Melissa, my WOD partner said to me "you can totally do a pull-up, stop talking yourself out of it!" and I did! So excited!

I got some of the yard cleaned up today, and I see my radish seeds are sprouting, and some volunteer dill from last year as well! The radishes are pods from last year as well. Not sure when I can plant here, I don't want to wait too long, but then again, we just had snow on the ground a few weeks ago....

Well, I can just imagine...have not found out jump rope...thought we had one somewhere...
Have you been getting the double unders in before workout?

How'd the basketball challenge go? I used to play in HS, and would goof around with my kids. But not for a LONG time. I bet it got hard after you got tired.

Well...we are going to be about 93 tomorrow...NUTS!
Super hot today.
We are just not adapted.
Might finish the season.
I heard Yosemite falls is raging.

Hubby and I had a long nice hike today...not tomorrow though...too hot.

Yep, the double unders do all that and get your heart rate up as well, a great calorie burner!

We're doing a basketball challenge at CrossFit tonight, we have a line we stand behind and when we make the basket we do 10 pull-ups and 10 dips (I'll have to modify), sounds pretty creative! I'm not sure what sorts of baskets and basketballs we'll be using...

I heard them saying they are planning to be open until April 17th, so we have a few more weeks of skiing to do! Plenty of snow for it as well, although it's better earlier before it softens up too much.

Kay-
Yay...spring skiing!
Might be the last, eh?

Beautiful week ahead.

100 sit up...wow! (I am not allowed with my rods, screws etc. ) Oh well. But yes...great gym price and DH is rolling and stretching with me! Last night, not much groaning or faces even!
I think he'll adjust fine to the retirement gig.
Good the last weeks soreness left...you must be feeling great.

Double unders...looks doable. I actually used to do this as a kid...didn't know I was working out. LOL. Maybe I can still do this. I bet this works core, balance, triceps...forearms...

Today its beautiful here. Breezy and sunny but not windy.
Just got word the water restrictions are on again...bleh...
Oh well.

Well Friday's soreness went away, but then we did 100 sit-ups at the end of Monday's workout, and my abs were sore yesterday from that! Also did double unders, I need to get some consistency in working on those, so my plan is to break out that rope before CrossFit and work on it for at least a few minutes. Started yesterday! I'm also slacking off on working on my pull-ups, so I'm also planning to get in some work on that at least 3 days a week. I think if I start there, I can hopefully add extra days on both as I go along. I won't improve if I don't work it!

I'm guessing your DH will be less sore over time, you know how it goes, those early tries are far more trying! Stretch and roll, definitely good advice!

That's a great price for a gym membership! I had a 50$ a year one I had kept up for years and rarely went to, and this past year I let it slip away...not sure why, but the time to renew just came and went, and I forgot to pay up! Oh, well, 2 gyms is enough for this gal!

I took today off, so we're going skiing! emoticon

Morning Kay!
Thanks for the encouragement.

We'll be doing whatever we can do for free...on that fixed income deal. LOL...
We will see how it goes as we adjust. But for now...super conservative.

I have a gym membership I bought years ago and added hubby that costs 70$/year. As long as we keep it active...so this we will do , and hike outside and such for a little petrol and a view. One day, up your way! We owe you some wine and a dinner! ;)

I have the baked oatmeal in the oven as we speak.

So, is your soreness completely gone??
Hubby is experiencing a bit, so we will need to find the right pace. He's been working 50 years straight, 45 as an Engineer...so this hiking thing will take some adjustment.

Goals...helping him stretch and roll too! Without driving him nuts! hahaha...

You could probably do a lot of CrossFit type stuff, since it's pretty much all scaleable, but then again, I don't know how easy it would be to do without a "box" to bring you along. There probably are a bunch in your area, so you could always check it out if you want. My box has been doing ease ins for newcomers, just showing the movements sometimes with a pvc pipe instead of a barbell, or just body movement with no weight at all. I think it's on the athlete to keep their own deficits in mind when doing a workout, and letting the coach know what we can and can't do (or even will and won't do!). No sense in doing a movement that will be counterproductive or even harmful!

I hope you like the baked oats, I'm going to make some more this week most likely. Not sure what fruit to add.

That's great that you have a hiking partner again! I do remember those hills!

I'm not feeling too sore today, maybe just too tired yesterday...

Kay- Hehe...mutual admiration! Well...Thank you my friend.
The garden is really perking along and gives me much solace while contributing to my physical health in many ways...so lucky me. I may not be able to do Cross Fit (Much to my chagrin) But...I do what I can.

I am going to try that recipe for oats tomorrow. :) I may try apple, cinnamon ginger...I have all that right now. Thanks!

Last week for the games, and you got sore! Must have been a hard work out to end the series. I guess it was good! emoticon

Tired tonight myself....been a crazy week. (See Deck post)
I slept better last night.

Goals with hubby home...hike! A lot more! Haha...I have a hike buddy again! We will take it slow. Went twice up the hills I took you on. The dam/reservoir down below ... full. Cool.

Who knows what tomorrow brings...we will see. emoticon

I love hearing about your garden, so I guess we're a mutual admiration society!

I've been baking the oats since I found this recipe www.eatingbirdfood.com/apple-cinnamo
n-
baked-steel-cut-oatmeal/
This last time I put in frozen blueberries and ginger, since I didn't have any apples. I've also used bananas and strawberries. I use less maple syrup than called for (about half) but this last batch was so sweet, I may leave it out next time! I also used vanilla oat milk (no added sugar, but I think the vanilla might make it sweeter tasting too).

This is the last week for the CrossFit games, so I hope it's good!

Maybe I did see Dad! I was on one of those city trails through preserved oaks...there were folks with dogs, older men on bikes too!

Yesterday, I got my new lettuces seedling planted...arugula, spicy greens mix, red leak mix, spinach, Lots of new babies...looks great. All made it over night...and a little rain today they'll likely enjoy.

I am enjoying your cross fit reports.

Fennel is one of my favorites...roasted some last weekend with yams...super yummy.

You oats sound yummy. I never do them in the oven...is that your preferred method?

Heading to the hills today...even with the rain...gotta get out.

5 miles in Roseville! Maybe you saw my dad or sister out there, they both live there, and my dad is quite the walker!

CrossFit went well this week, better than I thought I'd do for 16.4, which was a killer! 55 reps of 3 different exercises and 55 calories on the rower. I got to the rower (which was the third part) to my surprise and delight! I posted the details on the deck, so I won't repeat, but it was tough, but doable, to slog through. And I'm not feeling as sore as I expected either.

Did some yard clean-up yesterday, as well as roasted some fennel bulbs and chickpeas. Trying to keep some healthier options around for snacking!

And I've got some steel cut oats in the oven, I didn't have any apples today, so I put in frozen blueberries and a little coconut flakes with ginger and nutmeg. Should be tasty!

I got my 10 55 lb snatches! I did it at the start of the workout, got it out of the way, and then moved on to the actual workout that wasn't part of the open. So bonus!

I've been trying out the tens Larry got me at CES on my neck knots. It does help, they are subborn! Glad your masseuse was able to work them out!

And the drawers are lined! emoticon emoticon

Kay- Oh Good luck for sure!
You rock!
Your progress is eciting. Motivating.

(I got my drawers lined btw... ;)

I had another massage on Wednesday. The masseuse got deeper into my neck knots. Amazing. I had some for maybe 35 years....I cannot believe he could break it up! I think I am circulating better there. My awareness is definitely up...
Yesterday I tried stretching every few hours, I can feel it trying to seize back up. Normal...so, I am going to keep at this!
Thanks for the encouragement my friend. It helps.

I try to foam roll my legs (especially calves) before each workout. So many knots!

Today I'll do 16.3 for the open, not sure if I'll go for prescribed workout, it's 7 minutes of as many reps as possible of 10 snatches and 3 bar muscle-ups. I can't do muscle ups at all, so the most I could get prescribed is 10, that's if I can get a 55 lb snatch. That remains to be seen! If I can't do that, I'll got scaled, that's 35 lb snatch and chest to bar jumping pull-ups. I may be able to do that! Wish me luck!

I think it's supposed to be rainy all weekend...I have a massage/sauna scheduled for next Wednesday....looking forward to that!

Kay- We do have a good pad and roller. What stops me is my hands/wrists. VERY hard to do with a couple particular joints in my r hand and both wrists...really sad. Limitations.
But I definitely think the fascia issue is the answer, so I just have to keep working at this. I suspect, that is what was holding me together, prior to back surgery, so...I will now work like hek at this. I am appreciating knowing something very tangible I can focus upon.

Your Cross fit schedule sounds grueling yet amazing. Go Kay Go! I bet the environment is really contagious...exciting...as well as supportive. Very cool.

The site Therollmodeel.com looks super. I love this idea of self care health care, and resetting the body, reducing pain. I think fascia is key. (Lupus/connective tissue disease i suspect is key for me)

Have you tried foam rolling (or lacrosse balls?) that can help break up fascia, I try to roll at least a few times a week.

www.therollmodel.com/ I haven't used this system, but I've heard her on some podcasts, and it sounds pretty interesting.

the 16.2 closed out yesterday (Monday). 16.3 will post on Thursday and we'll have until the following Monday to complete it and post our scores. It is fun, a lot of camaraderie in the workouts, everyone is so supportive, no matter what level we're all working at, and it runs the gamut from total athlete to newbie.

Now, as for sleep....I'll take some more of that!

My hands are not able to do this, sadly. Cause...I would love it.
Just how it makes you feel I bet.

So...next Monday it closes? Or today???

My goals this week and to work hard on this stretching. Fater my massage, I found I could stretch much better than before. Trying to make progress. I think I have much scaring in the facia, that needs to be broken down.

Stretch. Vitamins. Oils. Core. Sleep.

Yep, 16.1 was last week, and it closed on Monday the 29th. Thursday 16.2 opened, and it closes this coming Monday, so you got it right!

It is a fun challenge. I did the prescribed workout, and got 6 toes to bar in 4 minutes. I know that doesn't sound like much, but I'd say 2 months ago I couldn't do any, so, improvement! And I got 5 in a row to start, a new PR for me. Try as I might after that I only could get one more...not for lack of coaching on Laura's part (she was my judge/coach for this one). I could try again, but honestly, my hands are pretty sore! At least I now have a benchmark to move up on! I also got a double under PR (personal record) last night, 4 in a row, so pretty good effort!

This weekend we are stormy, I may head in to work on Sunday, and take Tuesday off work...but I also want to whip up some lunches and maybe some easy, healthy snacks.

Hey, do you have Netflix? Have you seen the new Michael Pollen program on there, "Cooked"? It's right up your alley...really interesting and informative, and beautifully shot.

Kay- Wow! I can definitely see the appeal! Almost nothing feels better to me than when I feel strong. On the site it says "open workout 16.1 is closed..." , so if I understand, it gives he workout schedule and you have a certain amount of time to complete and post your time.
Wow.
Love it.

What do I notice with CrossFit? Getting up the rope last time was big! Also I've been getting up to 3 double unders (surprises me every time, and makes me stop!) more often. My goal for this year is 10 unbroken, so I have a ways to go! I need to get myself going on pull-up work as well, another goal.

But for the next 5 weeks I need to get through the Open. Made me quite zombie-like on Saturday!

Kay- Distraction is right! We had that weather heat up for the entire month of February and it became an outdoor race extraordinaire! I feel like I am catching my breath...but I know what you mean about 'out of sight'...
My focus completely shifted in a flash...

Cross fit 3 x/week sounds perfect for strength training. what do you notice the most in improvement?? Do you seem improvement in multiple areas? Climbing is such a sign of strength...I love it.

I have my compost going strong and have to rotate every day. My neck and shoulder tightened up over the weekend, but recovered already...I see much improvement after the 2 massages. So, maybe I am 'over the hump'... But I sure need to keep at it, then move to maintenance.

My goals this week...keep up manual labor out back. walk every morning. (done and done). All vitamins and oils. Log food! Gotta!

I've been hitting CrossFit 3 days a week. I forgot about my snack challenge, so haven't really been doing any veggie snacks....Oh well! Kind of out of sight, out of mind with that one.

We've been having computer issues at work since yesterday afternoon, so I left early. Can't see sitting around with nothing to do.

Maui, your pizza sounds great! And you'll get those drawers done on your time, I like the idea of a rainy day activity...

Hey team...how's everyone doing??

Mary- I hear you about the whole 'I thought I was beyond this'...I somehow think once I know this intellectually and adopt the lifestyle I want...well...that;s it. But some emotions just put me over the top I fall. But now I am trying to adopt a reality that the 'lifestyle' is...Life is a roller coaster, enjoy the ride and keep getting back up, going forward toward health, not beating myself along the way.
I truly hope you are feeling more on your path.
Like Kay said...'past self-helping your current self...amazing wisdom.

Kay- I agree...zero processed food is a must around here. I need that kind of support...cause I certainly have cravings.
I roasted cauliflower yesterday, made a cauliflower, green onion, herbs, mushroom parm pizza from fresh ground hard white wheat with a touch of honey...yum. I used my early girl jam schmere on the dough...just a teeny bit, under the cauliflower...yum.
Big flavor = eating less volume.

OK...the drawers are not done...my goodness right? But...I have done a ton of outdoor work which feels great. Garden planted, summer plants seeded in teh green house, today I hand trimmed the front of my property Oleander hedge. I am pooped...I could not trim it last year due to drought, so it needed lots of work.
I feel good about all that has gotten done. Outside has just exploded with these high temps.
Honest...I am going to get these drawers done!
(Rainy day...activity)

Wood- how are you doing with the evening snacking?

For me, I have to keep the superprocessed junk out of the house, makes it easier to not eat it! I think on the other side of the coin, if you have whole, natural foods out and ready to go, that makes it easier to choose those in those moments where you want something quick and easy NOW! I don't think all "processed" foods are necessarily bad, but the overly processed, sugar and/or empty calorie filled ones don't satisfy like whole food does.

That's cool that you found that e-mail from way back, it's like your past self helping out your current self!

I ended up roasting a cauliflower yesterday, oh it came out so good! A little EVOO, some apple cider vinegar and spices....YUM! Larry even liked it...

Happy Valentine's Day! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I hear you Kay! And for 3 years I would have taken exception too! but recently I have been craving junk and not wanting to eat the healthy food that I normally love so much! Crazy! I really thought I was "above and beyond" that phase of my life. And exercise - well I have to admit that lately I'd really rather not - just like Twain's saying. I'm trying really hard to channel my "healthy-lifestyle-loving" self...a couple of friends and I used to email weekly goals to each other back in 2012/2013...I filed those emails and found this that I sent to my friend in Feb 2013 when she emailed that she felt like crap and was eating junk:

Feeling crappy is a double-edged sword...you don't feel like exercising or preparing healthy stuff for yourself or anyone else...so you don't move your body and you feed it processed stuff and and an hour later you're back at the trough because your body is telling you it's hungry because it wants (and needs) nutrients buts it's getting empty calories instead...at least that's what happens to me...

Wow - how did I end up in a place where I've been completely ignoring my own advice??? I guess it's because I'm human. Too bad we started texting instead of emailing - I'd like to look back at my thoughts in 2014...

I'd rather snack on fruit too Kay...another thing I read about myself is that I used to save for fruit for my evening meal - get my daily veggies in first then reward myself with fruit later - too late to do that today but will start tomorrow!

Maui - Wishing you emoticon ! Yes dreaming of garden! I've still got lettuces and other greens growing in pots on the dock..can see the dock from my window...a large blue and small white heron are on it - not sure if they're fishing are just sun-bathing...
glad your son's spirits are good - that's an important piece of the picture! I hope you get promising news from neurologist! Your meal sounds wonderful - thanks for sharing - I need to get back to loving the healthy stuff and not craving the bad! Slaw here last night as well - raw turnips, purple carrots, apple, kale, lemon juice, apple vinegar, evoo, s&p, fresh herbs and tossed in a little chopped kimchi!

See you on the deck later! Time to exercise - even though I'd rather not I'll be glad I did when it's over!

Pura vida!

Love the quotes, Mary, but I do take exception with the Mark Twain, I don't think you have to eat food you don't like to eat healthfully. But I'm sure he was saying that at least partially in jest, probably the reverse is more true, we should not eat foods that we really like so much, the "treats" that are so prevalent. But whole food prepared properly can be so delicious! (and I realize I'm preaching to the choir here)

I must give some thought on my challenge for this week...I ended up with 6 days of vegan breakfast, pretty good! So maybe I'll set a snack challenge, I have a bunch of veggies and fruit, so the challenge may be to get those prepared to make easy snacks for this week. I generally have fruit for snacks, rarely veggies, so I'll concentrate on getting the veggies snack ready!

We may get a little rain/snow mid-week, I hope it pans out! We still have plenty of snow for skiing, but it could use a refresher!

Mary,
Thanks for the kind words and quotes. Yes, the garden of health...no lables...you are so right. I so rarely eat something with a label. Dairy...amazing cheeses and such. We do buy dairy and they have labels. But the dairy I purchase could make us swoon...so it's worth it. ;)

I will go up again to help him this week, not sure what day. Had a long chat with him yesterday afternoon. His spirits seems good really. And his medicines are keeping him alive, so we will use them. Not sure if any of this can be reversed. But When the neuro gets a look and report, this will be interesting.

Anyhow, I keep being drawn outside. This weather is gorgeous but hope it doesn't last.
Hard to stay 'in teh moment' and enjoy teh sun, when it may mean the rain is over. And that the drought will continue.

Mary- glad you stopped by. I made a latin slaw last night with shredded cabbage, green onion, cilantro, lime zest and juice, and a wee bit of home made creme freshe. I served it with a lightly battered fried Icelandic wild cod with cayenne...Oh my...super yummy.

Great food everywhere, when we remember.

I have lots coming along in the garden. My herbs have daffodils blooming this week...very cute and spring like.
Plums, peach are all blooming. Apricot about to burst. Waaay too early. Oh well.

Are you dreaming of the garden?? Bread percolating?
OK...break over.
Back outside for me.

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Hey ladies!

I haven't been here because I've been so embarrassed by the food I've been letting myself eat lately! Ridiculous. Found motivation reading about how great y'all have been doing!

Searching for motivation earlier I did some internet reading about why I should be eating the wonderful kale and carrots that are in my fridge instead of stuff with labels! Great reminder of the amazing benefits of superfoods - I shouldn't need reminding but apparently I do! And I ended up stumbling across some great quotes from some amazing minds that I think will help me get back on track.

Maui - how wonderful that your son is getting such great treatment now! I'm going to post some quotes below - please do not interpret this to mean I don't believe in taking medicines! I believe they are often vital - especially with a condition like chf.

Right now I'm lucky that I don't have to take any medicines and I'm hoping to keep it that way but if I don't get my diet back on track I could see health consequences.

Here are the quotes I found - I will try to keep them in mind if when I'm tempted to blow off exercise and make poor nutrition choices! My think my favorite is Shakespeare definitely have been having issues with my will.

Our bodies are our gardens our wills are our gardeners. ~William Shakespeare

"The best doctor gives the least medicines."
- Benjamin Franklin -

'he that takes medicine and neglects his diet wastes the skills of the physician.' Chinese proverb

When diet is wrong medicine is of no use. When diet is correct medicine is of no need.
- Ancient Ayurvedic Proverb

"The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease."
- Thomas A Edison

The only way to keep your health is to eat what you dont want, drink what you dont like, and do what youd rather not. ~Mark Twain

A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools. ~Spanish Proverb

OK - can't change yesterday but can do great today - so far so good - had nice walk with little pooch and only whole foods! Time to get outside some more - lovely day here!

Pura Vida!

I'm up to 6 on the vegan breakfasts this week! And even went for the soy latte at Starbucks this morning (my splurge since my dad does not drink coffee...) I should have checked first, since they had coconut milk too, I think I would have liked that more!

Kay- All week with no sweets! Good for you. And your porridge sounds wonderful. Hope you're having a fun evening with the 'ol gang.

I have been eating well all week. Not too restricted, but no real splurges.
Walking every morning.
Getting outside every day to work in the yard some.

I made a porridge from Tosca Reno's book "Eat Clean Diet" that was in the crockpot, so it called for steel cut oats, brown rice, cracked wheat, rolled rye (which they didn't have, so I went with a 5 grain blend) and wheat germ (I think). So I got some of those, (some I had already). I've had it 3 days now, since Larry wasn't up for omelettes before the ski. We ended up having the omelettes for a late lunch instead.

I'm still hitting CrossFit 3 days a week, happy about that! I'm hoping I'll be able to do that this week as well, since I'm heading down to Roseville on Thursday night to meet my old work buddies for dinner, and probably heading back on Friday (maybe sneak in a ski on the way back), so I'll see if I can make it Friday (or Saturday morning?).

I did make it through my week of no sweets OK! And I think it's made me think twice about mindlessly popping them into my mouth now! Plus I hid them all, so there's a bit of out of sight, out of mind!

OMG...I cannot believe it. Not done again! Liners are the liners not done. Had the day all planned, and then kids txtd...and by 8am I knew I was having company for the super-ball...It's all good. But today, still bake bread, fed roses, sprayed fruit trees for peach leaf curl, re-tied tree roses, shopped, made super ball snacks and supper, yep...no liners again! Hubby finished trellis atip the fence before the game.
Crazy. But good.
Kids here... :)

Omelets...every other day...pastured eggs.yum. Home made bread. 1:3 rye:hard red wheat, slow fermented. What bulk grains did you get?

emoticon Show those liners who's boss!

It was sunny here, but still a chill in the air. I got my grocery shopping done, lots of bulk bin grains and lots of fruit and veggies! I think this week my focus will be getting the vegan breakfast at least 5 days, got them made today in the crockpot, so that should be easy...will just add fresh fruit to the mix. I'm not going for all 7 days since Larry has promised omelettes tomorrow, and I'm not passing on that!

Kay- Yes...
Liners...haha...They are out!

Yes...steel cut oats are my go to every other days meal too. Dried fruit and nuts on top. Although there is plenty of 'sugar' in oats and dried fruit. Anyhow, eating healthy, no added simple sugar or processed foods. Sugar only found in real food seems best.

Yes, this has been a long process with my son. And it interesting now he has 2 female docs (Highly educated), 5 Board certifications between them, and they are listening to him. Sad this didn't happen years ago. And who'd have thunk to find this level of care in Woodland. Life is weird.

I am going to enjoy working outside today. Beautiful beautiful day and good for my soul.

Since you have the liners, maybe just set out to do the measuring as a first goal? Then the next goal could be to cut the liners? Keep it simple and doable, and you'll get it done!

I love cheese too! And eggs...especially when Larry makes omelettes which, of course, have both! So that's part of why I won't go all in on the VB6. But even the book suggests not going all in...so lots of wiggle room! I think I can try for the most part to get as close as I can to vegan before 6, or at least vegetarian most days. But then I made a crockpot roast chicken last week, and plan to make chicken soup (I made bone broth from the carcass), so that wont be anywhere close to vegan, but healthy, so I'm not bothered by it. I did find a nice crockpot recipe for a pot of grains for breakfast that is actually vegan, 5 different grains, including steel-cut oats, and non-dairy milk, dried fruit. So I'll be making that for my next weeks breakfasts.

Maui, hope those docs are on to something with your son's diagnosis. It's been a long haul for you, some relief would be great!

We're warming up this week too, into the 50s! Hope the snow doesn't all melt up high...

Morning goal setters!

OK...drawers not lined yet! LOL...
Just back from 2 more days, up at my son's, cardiologists/internal medicine etc. Big step likely, they found he is VERY low on a chemical that supplies the stimulus to the nerves of the heart muscle. Cardiologist made a critical observation..."OK, there are LOTS of software engineers sitting all day and night at their computer without CHF , so she said their HAD to be another reason. Did more labs and found this. He's now on 7 meds, but maybe this will help.

KAy- this eating vegan sounds interesting...we do eat less animal products than ever before. But I still eat 1.5 pastured eggs for breakfast. I eat vegan for lunch and some meat for supper. Overall, I think this overall balance has merit.
But cheese???? Beloved cheese...lol...

Kelpie- Is that cold behind you yet? Hope so. And Hope you are back in the water. You are moving in the right direction! Woohoo!
We are going to have temps in the 70's this next week! Nuts! Reminded me of Jacques fruit trees, mine are about to burst into bloom.

Mary-Oh yes...skipping breakfast ...not good for me either. Easier to plan ahead what and when to eat and stay on schedule. Keeps blood sugar even and brain in line...Kay is so good about this. I have followed her lead over the years. Plan ahead is maybe 75% or more of the way there! No last minute choices! That's a slippery slope.
I hear you about stress on the body...terrible. And it's so hard to steer back on track at times.
These peeps help me get there. Glad to see you here! ((hugs))

OK...today, I have a long list catching up from being gone, but did get out and walk already. Check. Took my supplements. Check. Water measured out so I will hopefully catch up.
I am off...lets see if I can get to some of the drawers!
One goal today...keep emotions in check. Deep breathing exercises.

Yikes I went way off track didn't meet walking or strength goal last week...only sore part of me was my back & that was from coach-induced stress not exercise

I'm sitting at train station now...heading to little home town to chauffeur mom back to her "here" house...

Kelpie & Kay congrats on moving to the right!!! I'm bouncing all over the place...today 3.5 down from just yesterday...crazy but good because yesterday was above my normal range

Maui...those drawers lined yet??

Clutter...a pretty serious problem for me because for so many years I had a huge warehouse for files now they're all in my home...much can be tossed I just need to sort...so new goal...fill a rubbish bin with paper for recycling every day!

I had never heard of VB6...interesting...I was pretty much vegetarian for 5 years back in the 90s (I say pretty much because I would occasionally eat seafood) but never vegan...I love my cheese! - grass fed these days...

I more goal for me - eat fruit & oatmeal first thing in the morning! I have been skipping breakfast & that leads handfuls of pretzels with my cheese later in the day...there are always pretzels because son takes them to school but I must resist if I want to get scale back to goal!

Train is here!

Have a great day!

Mary

I don't set anything in stone! And also feel free to use concepts from all different places to make my own plan or system...

The sweets-free has been easier than I thought, and I'm still eating plenty of sweet things, mostly fruit. I'm not worried about sugar that naturally occurs in a thing, more the added stuff, but for this week to make it easy enough to do, I decided to just cut out the candies and treats I was indulging in too frequently. So put all the chocolates in the back of the drawer at work...

I'm actually back to my goal weight this morning, kind of a surprise to me! Especially since I was 5 pounds over last week...

I am liking the concept of VB6, although I probably won't do it full force, I may try it out, at least I could do vegan breakfast pretty easily. That would be a start! Just switch from the kefir in my overnight oats and use a non-dairy milk instead. Then I think I'll try to focus on vegetarian lunches, not necessarily vegan...baby steps, right?

Yes, I have the liners, just kept doing other tasks...lacked focus...
I kept finding other things to do...yes kept busy.

OK...sugar, This is a GREAT goal...includes wine.
We have hit the wine nightly , not much, but often. I was good for most of last year, rarely having any. I need to go back there too. (started with all the celebrations for the wedding, then on to holidays. ) food wise I have been steady, but add alcohol (sugar), and I slip.

Much to contemplate. Still finding it hard again to get my brain off. Oh well, it's the spell I am in. VB6 sounds kind of interesting. I might give it a look.

You do so much, Maui, I can see where a task like that would slip away...do you have the liners, or do you need to get some?

I got the book VB6 from the used book store when I took my car in to get the brakes done, and started reading it, sounds like a fairly simple (not easy!) plan to follow, although I don't think I would go all in. I just like Larry's omelettes too much....but I may try to follow the concept and see how it goes.

But for this week I'm going "sweets-free" meaning pretty much cutting out the chocolates and mints I was having at work and in the evening after dinner...I started on Sunday, so 2 days in! And this morning I was back down a couple of pounds...so I guess that was more water weight than anything, but don't want to start a trend in the wrong direction!

Well, I did not get done the one thing I put on my goal list.
I am definitely flip flopping about with my focus ability. Not my usual self.

I did get many things done, feeling more caught up. and I did walk most days, and got outside work done as well as driving back and forth to my sons twice! So, I cannot be too had on myself.

There will be some back and forth this weeks as well.

I will again, put this little task on my list. Drawer liners in both bathrooms! Lets see if I can do this! haha...

Thanks for your kindness my friends.

My desk at work got a nice clearing, and it's dust-free as well! I went for it...moved some stuff around as well, cleared off all the paper that was just collecting dust. Much better environment for working!

Still a work in progress on the kitchen table, I do move some clutter off, and more comes in (it's our holding space for incoming mail...). I also cleared the space on the bedside table, put things back in their places, got rid of some old stuff that wasn't being used.

Thinking about next week....I'm planning to go sugar-free for February...so I will probably give it a trial run for the first week starting on Sunday. I've now got 5 extra pounds, some of which is probably water weight, but I don't want to keep up this trend!

OK, managed two out of three

Weighed in at 63.7! I'm a happy bunny.

Managed 4 aqua gym, however no aquabike. With this cold I didn't want to push myself too much.

So, next week,

4 aqua gym plus 1 aqua bike, and stay under 64...ideally keep moving to the right, but I'd a big loss this week, so I'm not going to be unreasonable.

And paperwork, I have to advance on that this weekend too.

I like that goal Maui! Keep it simple, you have enough on your plate without the added stress of adding unrealistic or unmanageable goals!

my decluttering today will be at work. I was looking at some papers that have been on my desk for so long they have grown a thick coating of dust! Time to clear that stuff out!

Morning.

Mary- Yes...better with my supplements and water. (I say water, because I find it harder in teh winter to keep my fluids up, because I get cold) I drink warm water, tea and a 1 cup coffee in the morning.

I am really struggling with goals...not my usual self for sure. Life eh? Worry is a tough one for me when it's my kids.
While I am trying to balance my thoughts, it's terribly hard not to worry. Sleep is still getting shortchanged.

De-cluttering is a GREAT place to work. I really enjoy this task...seems productive and lightens how I feel. Good choice.

I walked this morning, felt great. The moon was still up and just gorgeous.

OK...Goal I have been wanting to line my drawers in my 2 bathrooms. (It should be easy, I have very little in them) :) I de-cluttered when we redid my bathroom last year, so...get this done!

Yeah, soreness can be tricky, sometimes it's what you do, sometimes more doing something you rarely do!

I think this week is going to be focused on decluttering...clearing the stuff that is covering the kitchen table, for example, getting rid of some stuff in my guest closet, maybe even my closet! I started today with getting rid of some of the stuff on the kitchen table, either putting it away or in the recycle bin!

Core didn't really get sore maybe a little tender - guess I need to push a little harder!

Gonna try to work legs and arms today! And get in 5 miles of walking!

Keeping same goals for next week - sore 2 days and 5 miles at least 3 of 4 days -

Great job with your knitting Kay! Hope you get to ski today! I have snow-envy!

Maui - keeping up with your water and oils? sneaking a little exercise in?

Kelpie - great to have you back! I bet you get under 65 this week now that you don't have to sit so much!

Ok popping over to the deck then it's time to work those arms and legs!

Have a great Sunday!

Pura vida!

I did get a 4th day of knitting, Sun, Mon, Weds, Thurs. Maybe I'll pick it up again tonight! I'm mainly relieved that I remembered what I was doing, and where I was in the pattern, although I did write it down, that helped!

I'm going to have to figure out what my goal will be for next week....

Back reporting for duty, having given myself leave of ansence to get the correction finished! If only that had counted as exercise. unfortunately, sitting that still also led to the munchies emoticon

So, manged one of my goals, did aquagym 5 times this week. Still not under 65 kgs though though. And no active minutes last weekend.

Ok, can I have a goal to acieve at least two of my goals? emoticon

So, next week, acquagym at least 4 times plus one aquabike.

And get under 65 kgs!

The rest of you are doing well.

Maui, I'm so pleased for you! Despiite all the stress you've had recently.

Kay; I'd love to get back to knitting, and I may try it again for a short time despite my carpal tunnel. I so overdid it a few years ago that I ended up in agony! Not crossfit, just knitting

Mary, as you say, go at the pace that's right for us. I'm tender rather than sore, and that's fine by me.
I'm popping over to the deck now, with a week's absence I'll have a lot of catching up to do!

See you there

Just back from day 3 of CrossFit for the week...it was good, hard but good! I got a total of 0 reps on the metabolic conditioning part, but I'll take it! Can only improve from there! And I got to try out my new jump rope, it worked well, but I do need to do some snipping to get the length right.

Mary, your core sore? emoticon

Way to push yourself and to listen to your body Kay! Legs were very sore yesterday from my Tuesday workout and I could only do 20 minutes of a 40 minute workout called "leg day" - but at least I've found a free youtube workout that pushes me - gonna do it at least once a week and try to work my way up finishing the whole workout! Hope the massage helped those knots!

Maui - what a great report from you surgeon!!! I love Key Lime pie but hubby can't stand it - he lived in Key West for a year when he was 12 and I think they served it every day at school - too much of a good thing! (:

OK off to get some exercise - going to try to make my core sore tomorrow!

Pura vida!

That's great news, Maui! Poster child for back surgery, you really did rock it! emoticon

The skiing was OK yesterday, not the best conditions, but it's so nice to see the amount of snow even just since the last time were were up! The side of the road snow was probably at least 5-6 feet! So the grooming just wasn't as good as it was when they had more time to get out and really pack and groom. I'm sure it will get better, and so grateful for this amount of snow! We sure need it...I think our next outing will be Sunday.

I've hit my 3 days of knitting for the week! emoticon So I'll see how many bonus days I can get in.

Today is my trail commute...had a nice massage yesterday, hope that worked out some of the knots in my shoulders!

Kay- Hey...good for you to 'take it down a notch' if necessary. You know, I heard...after a certain age...rest days to rebuild are even more important. So..yep...good to take at at your pace. I bet teh slopes will be amazing today.

I walked 5 miles this morning, sunny, perfect temps. Felt great. Also had a recheck from my back surgery...4 year check up! Can you believe it?? Crazy! Time flies. Anyhow, doc said I am his 'poster child' for that particular surgery. Made my day. I told him about all my manual labor of late...cracked him up. His PA was asking what I do to keep 'in shape'...lol...
Nice start to my day.

mmmm Key lime pie! emoticon emoticon yum!

Mary, are you sore? I am!

I'm doing my knitting after dinner, good excuse to not snack so much! And still managing the 5 oz pour this week too.... I did CrossFit 2 days in a row, I thought I might die from it last night, we did overhead work and my arms/shoulders/back were having none of it! Just getting the barbell behind me head was torture! I had to switch from the 35 lb bar to the 15 lb! Then move down to PVC pipe! emoticon Nope, not too proud to tone it down! But I did manage to swing the kettlebell around later, after the shoulders and back warmed up a bit.

Kay- with all that work and cross fit...are you knitting at noon?

Mary- well done you! Sore ... yay!

Me- feeling ok, stress seems more managed...not achieving my fitness goals so well. But I did laundry, cleaned all tile, made a nice supper for hubby. Including a pie for his dinner...lol...Key lime. Oh my. But gotta celebrate.
