I Co-lead a team (link in my signature) that is specifically for people who do these events. We have forums for training, gear, prepping for obstacles, you name it!

I have not done one of these, but basic gear for me in the summer is water shoes with a good sole and support (walking shoe bottom but mesh uppers and a stretch /cinch tie that won't let the shoe come off e en when heavy with mud or water. I use mine to hike and swim. With my black lab along, I don't want to carry a change of shoes or clothes and want a sturdy shoe for rugged trails (not sandals or flip flops). I bought mine at LandsEnd. I hose them down and leave them in the garage to dry out for the next trip. I also have a quick dry shorts and tank top swim suit that goes easily from hiking to swimming and back. But perhaps you'll need something warmer?

I've never done one, but I'd think if the gear will possibly be damaged or get totally muddy, then use old stuff that you may be getting ready to retire anyway (at least as far as shoes go), but that aren't so worn as to not be effective in the event.

They do look like fun, so have a great time, and post a blog when you're done (preferably with pictures!)

And good luck!

Hey gang, does anyone on this team do these types of competitions? I am doing my first Urban Challenge on March 23rd - a 10K with a dozen or so obstacles. Meanwhile, I'm training with some Tough Mudders -- that's pretty hard for me right now, but there's always the future!!

So, any suggestions on gear? I have a 10K that culminates in a Penguin Plunge - a pool of 48 degree water. So shoes that are good for fast walking (not sure if there will be stamina for running between obstacles), but can be wet for the last 1K are needed. Good thing is this first competition won't be a muddy one!

Also, what training routines do folks follow? Love to get this topic going.
