Can't help you with the camp site but can offer you information regarding Acadia, we go there every year. You can hike, bike, kayak, swim (sand beach water is a bit cold even during the hottest of hot summers, but there are lakes in the area which are quite nice, and a short drive).
If you plan on visiting Thunder Hole, check the local tides and plan accordingly or you will be disappointed. Jordon Pond restaurant is definitely a stop with a nice easy hike around the lake. The carriage trails are amazing as are the stone bridges. The mountain offers spectacular views, some trails are more advanced then others so choose wisely per your hiking/climbing ability.

Bar Harbor (a short drive) offers whale watches, sunset cruises, bike rentals, kayak tours/rentals and tourists shops and some good restaurants.

I don't think you'll be disappointed, Maine isn't called vacationland for nothing, every season offers something to do outside!

Edited to add: Fall foliage season is right around the corner, the colors should be pretty good this year, we've had a good combination of sunny days and rain. Nights can be quite cool in the fall so depending on the type of camping you do, you will need to be prepared.

Thanks for the link, Lynda. Looks like a great site!

So, when is the best time of year to go to Acadia? It's on my list as well.

I was there once, but we didn't stay in the park, just visited for the day, and we stayed at Bar Harbor as well. (we made a stop at Red's Eats from the PBS show, for a lobstah roll...not a bad stop either)

There were a few hikes that looked good to me, but my companions were not hikers, so I just had to admire them from afar.

Enjoy your trip!

I love, love, love Acadia! One of my favorite places on the planet...although we did not camp there, we stayed in Bar Harbor, but what a wonderful place to hike, hit the beach and you must go to the Jordan Pond House for their FAMOUS popovers...the lines can be long, so you may wanna try to make reservations.

I've never been there so I can't give you direct information but I've relied quite a bit on the information at www.trails.com for stuff like this. You'll see descriptions of trails, roads, campgrounds, etc. I just confirmed there are tons of postings by entering the key words "acadia national park" and "acadia national park campgrounds" in the search area. Have fun!!

Have any of you ever been to Acadia National Park? We are planning a family trip there, and I was looking for some suggestions on "must do" activities while we are there. What's really good? What can we skip? Also, I know there are multiple campgrounds in the park. Which one do you prefer and why?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.
