My Mom and Dad were both travelers and campers. They had both been Sargents in WWII. So, they took their children camping.

Mom loved streams. geology, and woods. Dad loved seeing historic sights. Build on your mom's interests as you plan events with her.

You have gotten some good advice already, and I really don't have much to add, except it sounds like you will be prepared to have a really fun time with your mom! My first backpacking trip we brought a bottle of wine, and stopped at a cheese place on the way, so had a nice wine and cheese (maybe a nice bread would go good w/ that, some fruit?) after we set up camp. I'm also a big fan of coffee, and always bring my cocoa to put a little of that in my morning mocha...

Good tips so far and good idea, Joanne. We'll most likely be camping at Emerald Lake State Park in Dorset, VT. I'm still trying to decide between a bare site or a shelter. The bare sites have grills while the shelters have fire pits. Tables are included. There are faucets for water strategically placed throughout the campsite as well as toilet and bathroom facilities. There's swimming and boating at the lake, although my mom's not much of water baby, but it's beautiful there. She loves quaint things, history, and nature and there are a few (not many) things to do in Dorset and Manchester. We only plan on spending a few days (Saturday evening through Tuesday afternoon). That's as much as I have planned for right now.

Keep the input coming; it's been really helpful so far.

Oh how fun! I saw in your 'friend feed' that it is a surprise... I am just going to jot down some things that come to mind...most you probably already thought of, but who knows! ;-)

-air matress (as stated) is a must! & don't forget a patch kit & pump...just in case.
-tent that is tall enough to stand in for easy changing clothes if possible & lights that can hang inside are nice too!
-Some extra warm/soft blankets in case it gets cold at night.
-plenty of fire wood for campfire chats...& wine if she likes it!
-I think organization is what makes or breaks a trip.
Try listing out possible meals & what you need to make them work with what facilities you'll have. (does the site have electricity? tables? firepits? grills?...)
-prepare as much of your meals at home as it will make things a lot easier when you're out there...like freeze some chicken or lean beef in marinade & allow to thaw in your ice-chest before grilling. Maybe buy turkey burgers or salmon burgers that are preformed for grilling?
-bring her favorites if possible.(brand of coffee / creamer, foods?...)
-have some suggestions for daily activities (recommended hikes in the area?) BE FLEXIBLE with plans. The point is to enjoy yourselves & not be rushed here & there.

Any additional info you could provide about the trip would help us help you. emoticon

I would definitely suggest an air mattress. I'm guessing you've been camping before, so think of what creature comforts you prefer and talk to her about what she will want and need. Tent camping can be as primitive or as luxurious as we want to make it. Just make sure you find out what she is and isn't willing to do without while you're camping.

Good luck! I hope you have a great time!

This is my first post here, so howdy everyone. I look forward to meeting all of you.

I'd like to take my 65-year old mom tent camping with me in Vermont over Memorial Day weekend. It will be her first time camping. If anyone has any ideas about making this as enjoyable and as comfortable an experience for her as possible, I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance.
