If canoeing with children (or dogs), make sure you have a stable canoe. Some are more stable than others. We have 2 canoes, one stable and one light. We did a lot of canoeing with dogs and sometimes young children. Our kids were older when we got them, but since we've taken a few kids out. When my husband had a knee injury, we got the light one just because it was light. Within 5 minutes of launch, it went under when our dogs both shifted to one side. It just sits low in the water and is tipsy. We never let dogs or children in that canoe and only take it on placid water. Our other canoe has 4 seats, and is pretty much dump-proof, however our boys did tip it once when lunging for a fish that got away.

Young children seem to get a little antsy after too long, especially if you want to stop to fish. I guess it depends on the kid, but keep it short at first. Also, we have them sit on something so they are in immediate control of an adult until they are dependable at sitting pretty still.

I know a couple who, when their kids were little, had double kayaks, each kayak with one adult and one kid.

I'd say until the kids can paddle canoes are probably the way to go there. On a low skill option the lake near us growing up used to have boats that could hold a family that you moved by pedaling, like on a bike. We had a lot of fun with those.

so it seems to me that most people in the forum paddle whether it be kayak or canoe. It seems like something the wife and I would like to at least try. we have been "canoeing" on the Wolf River near New London WI. that kinda sucked. Have you paddled with children? Prefer canoe or kayak to start as a family. Not really looking for "action" as skills are limited, more like relaxing, and a maybe some fishing or something. Any tips where to begin?
