Hi Jenna--

Welcome.

I think people mostly post here when they've actually done something really fun and out doors. Seems to get more action in the summer. Check out Happy Hour on the Deck. That is where everyone is...

Hey Everyone,

I noticed this thread hadn't been replied to in a while and was wondering if it could be started up again...Not sure on how all that works. But I really like the idea. I know if I make plans for the following weekend ahead of time, it gives me something to look forward too and keeps me motivated during the week.

If not it's cool, was just wondering though.

We did a 12 mile mountain bike ride yesterday (after I did my bootcamp in the morning!) and I am really sore, but it was beautiful out, high 70's, and the trail was perfect.

Did a 61 mile bike ride with friends in Claxton, Georgia, "Fruitcake Capital of the World." It was an organized ride with hundreds of participants, and great scenery as we rode on rolling hills past cotton fields, pecan groves, pine farms and lots of rural areas and small towns. Best of all, we weren't sore the next day!

Went on a ~6 mile hike this weekend. We were going to meetup with a group, but it was chilly and drizzly, so we weren't sure how many people would actually show. Turned out to be a group of 18 of us on the trail! Had a great time!

That's impressive Birdy. Both the time spent birding and the number of species you sighted. I like to hike and see the incidental bird, but I learned a number of years ago at Organ Pipe National Monument in AZ's Sonoran Desert that there is a huge difference between hiking and birding!

I'm at a coastal Georgia birding festival this weekend. Walked around Jekyll Island for about four hours yesterday and around the dikes of an old rice plantation for about three hours today, looking for birds, glorious birds. The weather report called for big chances of rain all weekend, but so far, it hasn't rained during our scheduled trips -- YAY!
I think I have seen about 60 different species so far--this is birdygirl heaven!

Last Sunday my sister and I took my nephews to Mohican. It was a beautiful drive, a beautiful day, and we had a nice time. It's really fun taking the boys to a place our parents took us growing up.

I actually live near sea level in Sacramento, but my boyfriend is in Reno, closer to 5000 ft elevation, so I go get acclimated on the weekend!

I got in a trail run on Saturday, and a hike on Sunday, was a nice break from all the mountain biking we've been doing.

This past weekend I rode with my Coastal Bicycle Touring Club around the backroads of southern Georgia -- 34 miles Friday, 40 miles Saturday, and big tasty potlucks each night to replenish all the calories we burned. I am very impressed with all you mountain climbers. Around here the most elevation we have are little rolling hills that you all would probably see as flatlands. If we get 100 feet above sea level, that is really high.

Last weekend was our big mountaineering adventure. I blogged about it, if you want the details, but it was grueling and fun, pretty good weather, not a lot of bugs, and even though we didn't summit, we got pretty high (around 13K ft) and were pretty proud of that.

Yesterday was a long bike ride, I was hoping for a relaxing weekend, so I wasnt' too happy that we went so long as we did...(5 hrs on bad trails...)

My weekend... I arrived at the campground just before 4pm Saturday. My step-nieces and nephews helped me set up camp. I arrived in time to eat at the luau (anyone ever had trash-can turkey? It's wonderful. Big pile of coals, turkey on a stick cooked inside a clean stainless steel trash can). Sunday my extended family and I went canoeing for 4 hours. We think we went about 8-10 miles. The first half of the canoe trip was a lot of zig zagging as the water was low and there were many down trees. But, it was a lot of fun. My step-sister's family hadn't been canoeing and were grateful that my father and I were with them. (my dad builds wood and canvas canoes. And, has been canoeing for most of his life. I grew up in his canoe.)

It was the first time I'd been canoeing with my dad since high school. It was a great weekend. My shoulders are a little sore, though! :-)

Aster-I've found that to be true about going more than a mile or so from the trailhead here in CO too.

I climbed a fourteener this weekend for the first time on Saturday (by myself well with the dog). Monday, I took my 3 year old and the dog hiking with me. We did it spontaneously so didn't have all the gear (or right shoes on my side) to go far but it was beautiful. I just love the great outdoors. I want to camp more but it is beginning to get cooler. DH keeps telling me we need a new tent. And of course the tent he wants has to be a 6 man tent. *sigh*

Hi Wolfmusic--

That makes great big piles of sense to me. Reminds me of when I lived near Camp Randall Stadium and usu. tried to leave town on Badger football days. Memorial Day, we did go kayaking, but I picked the river we did based on the fact that there are no rental outfitters on it and it was awesome. We saw one fly fisherman and one other couple paddling. This fall, we want to extend fall by going to the Smokies, but from what I've read, we don't want to be there on a weekend, or at least we want to go to less visited parts of the park that day. Generally it seems if you go more than a mile or two from a trail head, you lose most of the people anyway. Have a super weekend!

Aster2606 -- I live in a big tourist area (Cedar Point right next door). I have found that although Memorial and Labor day weekends are big camping weekends it still beats being in this area for the holidays. When most traffic is moving into the area I'm heading out! Those are also the weekends I go to my second cousin's campground. Even when full it's still quiet and a good getaway. I do know that Labor and Memorial day weekends are horrible at other campgrounds.

For some of my weekend activities I have enlisted my 10 y/o nephew to go with me. Such as hiking and canoeing. For some reason everytime I schedule a camping trip it's always on a weekend he has other things he has to do. One of these times I'll get to take him. He enjoys spending time with me since I allow him to be a boy (ie, get messy). We have good times. Still, it would be nice to meet a guy who doesn't just say he likes camping to get me to date him, but actually does like camping! :-)

That's a cool little project that could take many years to complete. I bet there will be lots of great things to see along the way. When you make it to Wisconsin, you won't have a huge climb either. Timm's Hill is just at 1,951 ft above sea level. I've not yet been there, but a section of the Ice Age trail goes there from what I've read.

I am trying to summit the highest point in all 50 states. So far, I've gotten NY, PA, MD and WV.

I'm hoping I can bag OH and IN since they are very close together this weekend at some point. Not really much in the way of a "summit", since it's relatively flat out there, but that's the idea, anyway. =)

Hi Choc & Welcome Wolf Music--

I too used to do a fair amount of solo camping. Once, I got fed up with work on a Thursday afternoon and took vacation starting at lunch time. Trip to the coop grocery and to the liquor store and in less than an hour, I was on my way to camping under pine trees. Another time, my sister came for part of the weekend and the night she left there were tornado warnings and I ended up hanging out in the park bathrooms with the ranger who came around to notify everyone and "evacuate" us. It was still windy and scary after they let us go back. Not much sleep in the tent that night, I am afraid.

I know too what you mean about loving to do these things but thinking it would be nice to have someone to share them with. Tough to meet people doing solitary activities, but still worthwhile. Before I met my husband, I had this theory that the guy I was supposed to meet was always a couple of miles up or down the trail and that I just hadn't bumped into him yet. Too bad when you were with your husband he only wanted to camp on the busiest and in my opinion the ickiest camping weekends of the summer.

Wolfmusic...your camping weekends sound wonderful! I used to do that all the time, and it sounds like a good habit to get into again! BTW, I love your "wolfmusic" name...

This weekend my sister is holding her annual golf outing for a group of her friends who have nicknamed themselves "the sleezes"... so for golf, they are called the "sleeze on tees", if they go skiing, they call themselves the "sleeze on skis", etc... I'm not a golfer, but I'm going along as the official photographer and "sleeze in training"....ok... camera's ready... say "sleeze"

Just keep swimming!

Never give up!

Ah, a place to belong. I've been told I'm crazy for packing up a car with tent and gear, leaving Saturday morning. Setting up camp by myself only to stay one night and leave the next day.

What can I say? I made a goal to camp more this summer. I'm currently going through a divorce. I could never get my husband to go camping more than twice a summer. Only memorial and labor day weekends.

There's only me. If I look at the weather map and it looks like the weekends going to be good. I make my plans. My mom's cousins own a campground where my step sister has a permanent site. I'm not really alone, but can be if I want.

W/ just me I have room in the Durango for my bike and everything. I can go off by myself for a bike ride. Go see some covered bridges, or spend time with family there. (I dont' see then too often.)

It's been a very enjoyable summer. I've met my goal to camp more. I think I'll have the same goal next summer, too!

Although, it would be nice to meet someone who would like to join me.

Hey Kayotic--

You rock! I can't imagine mountain biking for that long. This weekend, I biked only 30 minutes or so and that is both barely longer than my bike commute to work and the only reason I did it was in order to paddle 6 miles down a river!

Yep. Last weekend was full of nasty weather and cleaning. This weekend included a nice 45 minute bike ride (shuttle for paddling) and a scenic kayak trip. For details, see my blog or what I posted on the paddlesports team page. I want to kayak again next weekend. And every weekend until it gets too cold!

What is going on with the houses! I cleaned up our kitchen yesterday morning, only to find a disaster area again this morning! It's a never ending battle! And we had dinner out last night! emoticon

Got in a 2+ hr mtn bike ride yesterday. I actually ditched the bike on the way up after about an hour, and ran aways. It was a nice sandy road, not so good for biking, but great for running.

Good Saturday morning everyone! My outdoor activity today will be walking a trail along the river near my house to let my dog go for a swim, then back home to tame some over zealous perennials in my gardens.
Should be a great day.

Thats where I met my husband for the first time! :)

There is some awesome backpacking in the park.

I am having a plant sale this weekend but hope to get in another 20 mile ride---although its supposed to be stormy both days so that might be a bust--If it rains I'll just go walking the trails instead. I don't mind hiking in the rain if its not cold out but I dislike riding my bike in rain a lot.

I am late on this thread, but I rode a metric century on Saturday and a short bike ride on Sunday...it poured cats and dogs and I am not a fan of getting water splashed on my face and back if I can avoid it..

Today I rode 21 miles and my legs still feel like jello from Saturday...but I averaged 13+ mph according to my friend's garmin so not too bad!

We went Mtn biking yesterday. We were supposed to meet Larry's French club for a Bastille day picnic at Lake Tahoe, but couldn't find anyone when we got there. Of course, he thought he had brought the invite, but we couldn't find that in the car either. We went to plan B, had a late lunch, and got in our bike ride (actually it was a road ride, but very steep uphill grade to the top of Martis Peak.) It's still a little smokey, and we heard a couple of thunder claps on the way up, and I got bit by a number of mosquitos, and an unknown bug that left a welt as big around as a quarter, but it was still better than sitting around indoors!

Was wanting to ride this weekend too-- I love cycling!) but saturday it's supposed to storm bad. I have a neat bike trail that starts in my backyard :) If I follow it and connect to others I can get to a mountain bike park and even farther Lake Michigan.

Doing some walking/ hiking in my area ( Michigan ), maybe pump up the tires on the bike and hit the back roads on that (we're supposed to get lots of rain Saturday, but hopefully Sunday will be a good outdoor day! ) Also the typical weekend yard work (darn grass sure grows fast with all the rain we've had! )

Just keep swimming!

Never give up!

I'm getting off work early today, so I'm hoping it doesn't storm (again!) so I can go hiking this afternoon. I'm also planning on hiking tomorrow at Hanging Rock State Park.

Hi! I'm new to this team--my name is Kadie.

I'll be out of town this weekend, but I'd like to check out some parks in the area.

Anyone from Oklahoma City?

Kadie

Nothing, but I was considering going for a hike today and maybe tomorrow up in our local mountains.
