the primary difference is in the batter. cupcakes are the same batter as a cake and could be baked in a sheet or round cake--any cake batter can be baked as cupcakes. they generally are going to be put together with the creaming of butter and sugar together, then adding wet ingredients alternating with dry ingredients. Muffins are basically a quick bread, often do not require a mixer because they use oil and should be more dense than a cupcake which should be light like a cake with a tender crumb.

Muffins and cupcake recipe question?
Can someone give me a side-by-side comparison of your basic muffin and cupcake recipe that would yield the same amount of product? If basic can't be done, how about chocolate muffin vs chocolate cupcake (or oatmeal, lemon, etc.). The difference is more than in the frosting of a cupcake because the texture is different, so please no "a cupcake is frosted and that is the difference" answers. It is important that the portion sizes of each recipe is the same.
