Ten Ways to Live Better

by Ellie Krieger

1. Be more mindful at meals

Stop shoveling your food and start really tasting it. Experience your meal fully. Pay attention to its taste, texture, aroma and appearance. To do this you have to eat more slowly and chew well. And that usually means you will eat less, digest better and enjoy more!

2. Fill your plate with color

The most nutritious foods have the richest colors. Red and orange indicates the presence of powerful anti-oxidants. Dark green vegetables are loaded with calcium, folate, and iron.

3. Listen to how you talk to yourself

Our inner voice can have a great impact on how we feel about ourselves. When you catch yourself being overly self-critical, turn it around. If you make a mistake and think “you idiot!” stop and say “no, I am not an idiot, I just made a mistake.” And if you find yourself criticizing your body, stop and list the things you like about yourself

4. Take an active vacation

Don’t stop at seeing the world through a car window. Get out and explore! Take a walking tour or a bicycle tour. Go for a hike, go cross-country skiing, rent a canoe. Not only will you see a sight, you will experience it, and do your body a lot of good.

5. Drink less soda (and more water)

One can of regular soda has up to ten teaspoons of sugar. That is 160 empty calories worth. Instead of sugary drinks go for 100% fruit juice. It has just as many calories but it is chock full of vitamins. Remember water is the best, calorie-free way to quench your thirst.

6. Have a cup of tea

Bet you didn’t know that tea contains powerful anti-oxidants that protect you from disease! And while tea does contain caffeine, it has half as much as coffee. So skip the coffee break and try a spot of tea.

7. Take a bath

Light some candles, drizzle in some delicious smelling bath oil, shut the door, and relax. A bath is a wonderful, inexpensive way to get away from it all. It is a perfect way to de-stress.

8. Eat for Energy

The golden rules for high-energy eating are 1) never go more than 4-5 hours without eating 2) include some protein at each meal or snack 3) avoid heavy high- fat meals and sugary foods. You may think you are too busy to eat regularly, but there are many high-energy foods that can be prepared in a flash. Keep your cupboards stocked with healthy foods you can grab and eat on the go.

9. Join a club or start one

Whether it is book club, walking group, softball team, or choral society, being a part of a club is a great way to socialize, stay inspired and get away from the daily grind. If there isn’t a club out there that interests you get some friends together and start one of your own. It can really enrich your life.

10. Act like a child

Have you ever watched children play or dance? They are so free and joyful, it is a reminder to us grown-ups that moving is fun. So dance around your living room, go for a bike ride, play a game of catch, or jump rope -just for the fun of it.

"Life's a dance, you learn as you go... " Go ahead and dance!
