Hi Rosmary. I'm trying to batch cook and freeze on weekends. I've been whole foods plant based since June. It's been a process for me really. Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Ultimately I would like to be low fat but right now I will concentrate on a few things at a time. I want to do this for the long haul. Looking at lots of videos and started Dr Fuhrman's "The End of Dieting".

Have a great day!

Hi Esmerelda! It sounds lie you are progressing well with your plan. I have been watching lots of videos and just went to the library for a couple books and a plant based cookbook. I am really ready to eat and feel better. I love the idea of having a friend to do this with. emoticon

Welcome! I think you're right to just try eating healthy for a while. The first two weeks I was doing whole foods, plant based diet, I just ate as I pleased (anything on the diet) and watched a lot of videos for inspiration. I started tracking in week three. That was about two months ago and I'm very happy with my progress. Let's try to support each other and maybe the team will become more active as we go along!

Hi I'm looking for a team that is active for support as well. I have been struggling with my weight for ten years now and have tried everything from keto to vegan. I'm trying to focus more on eating whole foods and not put so much pressure on myself to be perfect. Ideally I'd like to lose about 25 pounds but I'd be happy with 10 to start.

Hi All - Just wanted to let you know I haven't been on lately due to some serious personal issues. I have resigned as leader, but had a request from someone who wanted to become a leader. Good Luck to the new leader. I still check out the forums from time to time. See you around the forums.

VEGGIE_DEB,
what were you motivated to do? What was your goal?

How is it that you are unmotivated to reach that goal? Is it like you wanted to loose 60 pounds, but it is such a chore to loose weight, that you might as well eat other stuff?

Is it that you wanted a new career, and were going to get an education, but now are unmotivated to study?

Fill me in.

James

VEGGIE_DEB,
on motivation ...

What keeps me motivated are a few things. One is wanting to live longer, and healthier. No I don't want to eat things I don't like, and live a long and miserable life. But I actually enjoy food more than ever now.

After cutting carbs way down (no bread, no rice, no pasta ...) my taste preference changed. It went agains my core beliefs. I don't like tomatoes ... , well actually, ... actually they taste great now, no no, they can't, I never liked them before ....

Also, I've lost weight eating healthier.
So I enjoy more foods than ever, just different.
I need no motivation to stay on my path, because my old way of eating is now unpleasant.

James

I'm doing some blood sugar experiments on myself. I've taken my morning blood sugar, had breakfast, then taken it later and it has gone up. Puzzling since breakfast has virtually zero carbs. Eggs have about half a gram each, so a two egg omelette is still only 1 gram total.

No toast, not jam, no sugar in my coffee.

I'm trying to figure it out. As a diabetic my blood sugar is most likely higher first thing in the morning, and should drop as I become more active and move.

I made a vegan red lentil with chickpea and tomato stew tonight. It smells so good! I'm just thickening it up now (boiling off the excess liquid) I have some basmati rice to put it on. Since only my one son and I are eating it we'll have plenty of leftovers - Yum!!

Wow James - that was a lot of coffee! I'm sure it did mess with your bs because my Dr. told me avoid caffeine. I did for quite a few years but now I usually have one cup of orange pekoe tea in the morning with my breakfast. Right now I have 2 favourite herbal teas - Bengal Spice and Harvest Pumpkin - although that is a black tea so it likely has some caffeine.
I hope your numbers are good James.

Jan,
there are always herbal teas. I love peppermint tea. I used to drink that with a lot of sugar, after I found out sugar was bad for me I had it with a fair bit of stevia, and now only with a hint of stevia. Often just straight peppermint tea with nothing else in it.

Plenty of other herbal teas too.

I just had my A1c test on Friday. First one in about 8 months.

I had strange symptoms around October, that I can only attribute to higher blood sugar. I was drinking a lot of coffee though (like 12 cups a day) an over time I think that really messed me up. So I stopped 12 cups, down to none, or 2 per day, and have been since

So it has been close to 3 months of feeling OK again, and that is about how far back the A1c test can see, with the more recent blood sugar having a stronger tilt on my A1c. I get the results on Thursday when I see my doctor.

Wow Lassy, I didn't know that. That means until this year, when I got to 6.5, I was pre diabetic!

I have a lot of bad symptoms though! When I eat a lot of sugar/carbs, I get bad symptoms, and my big toe is numb all the time.

Hi James, Jan and Everyone
Checkup got cancelled twice by Dr.'s office. Finally went last Thursday after work. So here's the low down. Everything is great! Cholesterol (LDL) is down, BP 120/70, Weight down 5.5 lbs, A1C 6.8 - which could be lower but overall he and I were both very pleased. He says with these numbers if I could get my A1C down lower than 6.5 I would be in the pre-diabetic category. Very encouraging news.
I have to take the car in for repair today and have an 8:30 appointment so I better get going.

Hope everyone is well.

Lunch was hamburger stuffed bell pepper halves.

I can't tell you what I ate for breakfast.

Yesterday I had the most delicious chicken salad...very fresh tasting...very little mayo. It had apples, grapes and nuts in it.

I also had delicious collard green soup! It's made from a chicken broth base, and also had a few great northern beans in it and a couple slices of small sausage boiled in it. The chicken broth and sausage really give it a great flavor.

I had some ice-cream two days ago, not a lot, but some. Up 3 pounds overnight and feeling puffy in the face.

Duh!

No ice-cream yesterday and 2 of the 3 are gone. Feeling physically better today too.

Hi all - my regular Diabetes wellness checkup is this Friday (25th); bloodwork on Wednesday. I hope to see good numbers. I will let you know next weekend how it goes. After looking into several gyms, I have decided not to pay all that money and to dust off the old treadmill here at home. I also have several exercise videos that I could make use of. I will try it and see how things go. I have to think commitment!

Wonder what happened to Baby Lucia? She said she needed help with things to eat.

I was off plan last night I had a sudden craving for popcorn and coke! And boy did I pay for it in the middle of the night!

Today will be a better day...I have plenty of whole food in the fridge.

Hi - I did look to find out if pasta is a "whole food" and I think if it is made with minimal additives and whole grain it should be ok. I wouldn't eat it all the time, but once in a while shouldn't hurt.

My recent whole foods menu:

three eggs cooked in olive oil.

smoked turkey breast (fresh, not sandwich meat) with squash, red bell pepper, vidalia onion cooked with a little olive oil

smoked chicken breast, fresh, with green beans

two teaspoons of vanilla icecream from grandson's bowl. Okay, that was a no no

one tangerine

BABYLUCIA,
I have blood sugar issues myself. I avoid all carbs (except for some small treats). But even when avoiding carbs there is plenty to eat. I just had a discussion with someone on a Keto team that she couldn't eat chilli anymore.

Well not true. I look at food in terms of what percentage of its weight is carbs. The higher it is the worse it is for my blood sugar. At about 6% I'm comfortable eating it without much thought. But here are the very high carb foods that I NEVER EAT:
- refined sugar (100%)
- rice (20%)
- potatoes (15%)
- pasta (30%)

However, I don't think that sugar or pasta are "whole" foods. So neither whole, nor low carb.
(Lassy, is pasta a whole food?)

Although your typical beans in chilli are about 15% carbs, if you make a chilli without beans it can look like this:

- hamburger (0%, yup, none)
- tomato paste (15% ... a little high, but I'd put it in)
- tomatoes (2%)
- green peppers (2.9%)

So the only thing missing is the beans. But the above is a great chilli too. I've seen some very low carb lentils in the bulk store, way lower than the others in the other bins, and less than 6% too.

I might add that I've managed my blood sugar this way for nearly 6 years (no medication), but was on diabetes meds for 12 years before that.

I'm here for you. Keep chatting!

James a little denial in your case is not a bad thing since you are doing so well.

Lassy I'm certain that wheat bread turned to sugar. I had the symptoms to prove it.

Has your BS ever spiked high enough to cause neuropathy symptoms?

I'm perplexed at my condition.

I'm not on meds. Until this year, my a1c was under 6. Oh by this year I mean 2016! Should have said last year.

In 2016 it climbed to 6.3 then in 2017 it climbed to 6.5

Not fantastic, but odd that it produces such horrible neuropathy symptoms. I know a lot of people walking around with much worse numbers.

Looking at "whole 30", it looks like whey protein itself is OK, but the other stuff (chemicals) added to make it taste like vanilla, etc., is not whole foods.

I just won't talk about it.

Jan - I've heard that wheat is the new "sugar" as far as diabetics are concerned. If that is true the whole wheat bread you ate turned right into sugar in your body. Check out this link.

Lassy, I just try to check it fasting in the morning, then two hours after supper during the week since I will forget after lunch at work.

If I don't eat bad, it is pretty normal. This morning was 102. I did not eat bad yesterday. and it was normal two hours after dinner last night. I think it was 113.

But, boy, let me eat something bad! The other day I ate seven pieces of whole wheat bread! Two hours after it was 234!

I am not on any medicine, so I don't have lows.

If I eat right (low carb) for a few weeks, it runs in the eighties and low nineties, which is great for me.

As for whole food, I think Whole30 and similar plans are whole foods. Not processed foods. Foods that occur naturally. Hence, cheese is not allowed on whole30, neither is butter. No mixing, stirring, levening, processing, ect.

Good question James.
Here is a link to a website that discusses whole foods. (BTW - it supports my definition too).

LASSY,
Protein powder (you know me), like whey protein powder, is probably not a whole food because it is processed from dairy.

Just what makes something "not whole"?

Hi Jan - Does your Dr. have you testing your BS very often or are you just doing it on your own? My BS is always higher after I've eaten too. My Dr. told me to get a consistent BS reading to check it twice a day at the same time EX: before breakfast & before dinner as for me it is the lows that are more troublesome. Maybe it's time to discuss with your Dr. when is the best time to test your BS and when to be concerned.
Also, I find when I am consistent with my food I have a much more level BS reading. (I am careful to eat only what my plan calls for and only deviate once in a while).
Good Luck to you! Think Positive! 2017 will be better!

Happy New Year! emoticon emoticon

Welcome to our newest member 50DOROTHY emoticon Please feel free to post on this or any of our boards. (I have to admit this one is the one I check most often).

Welcome to 2017 - a brand new year and my goal is a brand new me. Of course I fell off the wagon over Christmas! but now it's time to get right back on.
My healthy way of eating is vegan but that may not be yours and that's ok. We support each other here in their choice to eat and be healthy no matter how they choose to do it.

Ask yourself a few questions:

Is what I have been doing working for me? -> if yes keep on doing it! ->if no what can I do to improve/change it?

What is the best way for me to eat/be healthy? -> do some research -> read books, go online or ask your Dr/Nutritionist -> make a choice and stick with it for 3-4 weeks. If you like the way things are going & the way you feel stick with it!

What happens if I fall off the wagon? -> almost everyone does -> accept it and move on - after all you can't change the past ->move on!

How long until I see results? -> that depends on you and what you are doing -> sticking to the plan (no cheating) & exercise -> results will likely be seen much more quickly that if you are half-heartedly or only on weekdays following your plan -> remember you didn't gain weight/become unhealthy in a week or a month - it happened over time so doing the reverse will happen over time too

Goals anyone? -> small goals are better than big ones -> make your goals realistic - maybe two lbs off this month is realistic for you (any more off is a bonus!)

Celebrate your achievements! -> whether it be a new trinket or just a "hug myself - I'm worth it!"

OK - Enough of the Pep-talk.
The biggest question is are you ready?! (I am too!) emoticon
Come here to post for support or just to share what is working for you!

Have a great 2017!!! emoticon emoticon

Happy New Year!

I've tried Dr. Barnard's Vegan plan the last two and half days, and while I appreciate his knowledge and experience, and find his videos very informative, I can't continue to follow his plan of no meat fish or poultry.

The healthy foods I ate in attempt to get protein, oatmeal, whole grain bread, beans, all have my blood sugar out of control.

So, it is clear that I need to be on very low carb.

I will now try The Whole30 eating plan.

It allows lean poultry and fish. Does not allow dairy or butter, grains or legumes. It allows olive oil.

I'll eat the foods it allows, but carefully track my carbs and try to keep them under 50 gross grams a day.

We'll see how that works. Gotta get my BS under control, it is making me feel bad. Two hours post breakfast it was 160. My body is very sensitive to such spikes.

Yep James, I've been told that our liver actually makes sugar at night.

Today I stuck with Vegan, but boy were my carbs high, around 200!

I think because I had brown rice at two meals, probably not a good idea.

For dinner I had seven layer salad (without the cheese, bacon, eggs), brown rice, great norther beans (totally unnecesary since there were green peas in the salad). amd a slice of Cobblestone Mill wheat bread. Should have left off the beans and rice.

I was under goal for protein.

I'll lick this!

Jan (JRWELL58),

for a type-2 diabetic, it is pretty normal for blood sugar to rise overnight. I don't know how "normal" that it for you. It happens because during the day time, with some movement, carbs are burned off, keeping blood sugar lower. But while sleeping you hardly move at all, at so the sugar in the blood builds up, for a morning high.

Also has to do with the liver (which I don't understand) and is call the "dawn phenomenon":

www.diabetesselfmanagement.com/blog/
co
ntrolling-the-dawn-phenomenon/

It seems about half of those with type-2 diabetes experience this.

Lassy yesterday for lunch was salad with vinegrette topped with strawberries. Plus two slices of Cobblestone Mill wheat bread.

Dinner was brown rice, Great Northern Beans, and a tangerine.

Bedtime BS was 89 which I was pleased with.

This morning was 118 though, so something happened during the night.

I'm going to try this for a couple weeks and see what happens.

Breakfast this morning was oatmeal, 1/2 banana, and walnuts.

Jan - I think part of the plan to going vegetarian or vegan is to eat more greens/salads. I have two salads a day - one at lunch / one at dinner and I may have rice or sweet potato or squash (some type of carb). My snacks (if I have one) are fruit such as 1/2 an apple or 4 - 5 low fat (under 4 grams) / low sugar (as low as I can find - usually under 5 grams) crackers. I drink tea/herbal tea and water. I also have beans - usually black beans on my salad for protein. Sometimes I'll make a large quinoa & kale salad that lasts only a few days in my house because everyone loves it so much. I have oatmeal (steel cut oats) with blueberries and 1/4 apple on it (or sometimes a small banana). I am losing weight slowly but surely and my BS numbers are very good.
I went to the Goodwill used book store in our city and found a few vegan/vegetarian cookbooks emoticon which were really helpful. I also found a vegan smoothie recipe book so I try to have a smoothie emoticon 2 times a week - once during the week and once on weekends to change things up a bit. Sometimes I will have spoon size shredded wheat & bran with soya or almond milk & blueberries if I feel like cold cereal. I have made yummy vegan pancakes but don't always feel like cooking.
BTW - you can buy vegenaise - a mayo for vegans. Just look in the health food section (refrigerated) of your grocery store.
Let me know if you need food suggestions - I have lots. emoticon emoticon

Jan - my blood sugar is lower than it has been in months - which kind of surprised me (even though Dr. Barnard's book/video said it would become lower). I'm hoping my cholesterol will be lower too - but I have to get the blood work done to see that result. In the last month 6.1 pre-breakfast is about as high as my BS has been. Most times it is in the 5's. Not bad eh?! (It used to be in the high 6's and 7's. (Normal is 5.5) My next appointment is Jan 27th so I think my Dr. will be very pleased (for a change) with my progress.
This weekend my goal is to clear off the treadmill - hubby cluttered it up - and put something different on it - ME! I am aiming for 30 minute walks 3 times a week to start.

Lassy one of my favorite dishes is seven layer salad, which includes a thick layer of mayonnaise, a thick layer of shredded cheese, a whole pack of cooked bacon crumbled, and several boiled eggs sliced.

I'm going to make it Vegan (sort of), by leaving off the cheese, bacon and egg....and using low fat mayo. Got to have the mayo.

I read somewhere today in my online research that the quickest way to give up on Vegan was to try to hold yourself too strict. Too freak out about every little thing, every little ingredient.

It said any reduction in meat, dairy, egg, fat was a good thing.

Here's how I need your help. How has Vegan affected your BS? Since on Vegan we are allowed foods like corn, whole wheat bread, oatmeal, rice?

I'm worried what my a1c will be at next appt end of January!

Hi Jan ~ It took me weeks to get into the Vegan mode. First I eased into no dairy (cheese was my crutch), next I took out meat and lastly oils & fats. I do not count anything - that was really hard to get used to. I have been on it for about 2 mths now and I am liking it. I found some good recipe books that have delicious recipes. Even my family likes all the recipes I've made so far. I focus on what I am eating and not what I am not having. So far so good. Let me know if you need any help.
Of course I am here to support anyone who has chosen to eat good, healthy food no matter what plan you are on.
Good Luck and Happy 2017!

Hey James!

Yes you should have worried about me, I needed worrying about!

The other day I ate three pieces of coconut cream pie and two hours later BS was 235!

I'm giving Lassy's Vegan plan a whirl.

Just had two slices of Cobblestone Mill whole wheat bread. Delicious!

The Vegan plan seems to be higher carb, so we'll see how BS does.

KENNETH1973,

the main thing to loosing weight is what you eat, not exercising off the calories. The other main thing (yes two main things) is to be connected and invested. I've known LASSY and JRWELL for a while here on Spark People, and I'm sure we're all here to keep you invested.

Are you planning to count anything? Calories, grams of protein, fat, carbs? I have a digital scale myself. I serves two purposes, one is for making recipes, so I can measure quantities. The other is to weight portions of what I eat. It has a zero out feature, so I can put a plate on it, zero it out, add an item to the plate, weigh it, zero it out again and proceed with the next item.

Thanks Lassie!

Today I tried Vegan. Stuck to it as best I could. No meat. No dairy.

We ate out dinner at Olive Garden, so I ordered spaghetti with marinarer sauce and ate half of it. Also had their salad.

I ended up with only 25 g of protein for the day. i wonder if that is healthy. I also ended up with around 90 carb grams. Largely because of the spaghetti. He did say we could eat pasta.

I also had two Little Cuties. He said eat fruit.

I think I might like this, though it seems to be more carbs than I was having before.

What's your thought on that?

One thing about it, Dr. Barnard is my age, 63. He looks darn good for his age. Guess the way he eats agrees with him!

Thanks

Hey everyone. Hope you all are doing well. I've been feeling bad and haven't been on the computer much the last few days. Getting ready to start my program the first of the year. Just wanted to thank James and Lassy319 for the messages. I want to cut back on carbs but not eliminate them all together. I just don't seem to enjoy eating most meats since I was sick and in the hospital. I'm disabled and probably won't weigh until my next doctors appointment in early march. If there is snow on the ground I don't go outside unless I have to. If I fall I cannot get up on my own right now. I hope that will change with the weight loss. Hope you all have a blessed day and I'll try to get on here everyday from now on. Going to hook up my old external hard drive to my new computer and search for a few pics of me to post on my Spark Page. Be blessed, stay strong and see you all lighter!

Hi Jan - Good to see you again! Well, I decided I had to try something new and Dr. Barnard's program made sense to me. Once in a very blue moon I have shrimp, but for the most part I am staying true to the Vegan way of eating. Like he says in his books/videos try it for 3 weeks. If you don't like it, you can always go back to what you were eating before.
What ever you decide to eat - eat whole, healthy foods.
I've found when I track my BS twice a day, I do better with my eating. It serves as a reminder to me about my life's mission - to live a healthier lifestyle and a longer life.

Hi Lassy I saw your post on sparking low carb team, and checked out a video by Dr. Barnard.

Sounds interesting. And promising!

I have totally blown my low carb program during all the holidays, gained weight, and my BS is out of control.

So I'm thinking of trying the Vegan program. I noted that he said you have to do it all the way...can't have a little meat or fish here and there. Then I noted that you said you sometimes eat shrimp.

Can you share more thoughts on that aspect?

I thought it was so funny when he said cut up your salmon in little bites, put it on the floor for your cat!

I've got to give this some serious thought. I don't want to die. I've been having lots of diabetic symptoms. Burning fire up my body, left side feeling paralyzed. This happens in middle of night.

Today I ate three pieces of coconut pie. Two hours post my BS was 235!

Hello Kenneth!

I'm here everyday. I may not post everyday, but I'm here everyday. I too am a type-2 diabetic, and I've managed my blood sugar by food choices only for over five years, with high end of normal HgA1c tests.

I am very aware of carbohydrates in foods. What I do is research a food before going shopping. Frankly everything on my shopping list has been researched at one point, and of course new things sometimes get added to my list of possibilities.

My real goal is to eat low carb, quite low, about 40 grams a day. You may think there is nothing left to eat at that level, but there is actually a great deal of whole foods. First of all it isn't calories that I shun, it is carbs. So virtually any meat is low carb, zero really, and I don't eat lean cuts of meat, I eat them all. Then vegetables... My personal cutoff is ones that have 6% of their weight, or less as carbs.

I'll chat more later. Do stick around here. I'll be back.

Hello Kenneth and welcome to the group. emoticon If it's low carb you want to know about James is the one with the knowledge in that area.
The fact that you are trying to eat healthier is a step in the right direction. On the program I am following (Dr. Neal Barnard) I can eat all veggies except potatoes because they make the blood sugar spike. I do make sweet potatoes and eat rice but not regular potatoes. I also do not eat meat (on rare occasions I will have shrimp). It was a process of learning to let go of the foods I was used to eating and embracing so new and different foods. Today for example we are having Red Lentil and Chickpea Curry on a bed of Basmati Rice with a fresh green salad. I also have type 2 diabetes and am trying everything I can to become healthier. I know I have lost some weight but my Dr. wants me to lose more. So Vegan is how I am eating now. I feel better and have more energy. (I think it's working).
A couple of books you may want to look into:
Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes (also the get healthy, go vegan cookbook)
Or if you are still eating meat I recommend:
The G.I. Diet - The Green-Light way to Permanent Weight Loss by Rick Gallop
Or if you are interested in going Low Carb I recommend:
Dana Carpender's books (Maybe James can recommend a few low carb books)
Or you can go online as there are many sites that support any way you choose to become healthy again. We can do it!
Have a Merry Christmas and I'll check back in a few days.

Just joined the group today. I got very sick and my taste changed and a lot of the foods I loved no longer taste good to me Beef is one thing I can no longer eat...it tastes awful to me anymore.I still enjoy fish ( if it isn't fried ) and I love potatoes of any kind. Jello tastes great to me as do my shakes with the NutriBullet. I'm afraid of gaining the weight I lost while being sick by eating to many potatoes. I eat to many carbs right now but they are what I enjoy eating. I hope my taste returns but I also want to get healthier. I have gall stones and type 2 diabetes. I weigh 370 pounds down from 420 a few months ago.I could use your support and ideas to continue to lose weight all while watching my carbs. I'll post a pic soon and look forward to meeting the few of you that are left here in this group. We can do this in the new year! Have a blessed day and thanks for your time.

Good Point James! Eating real food makes all the difference in how our bodies process what we eat and how we feel - inside and out! What's that old saying "You are what you eat" emoticon

Subject: sugar

An idea of Dr. Fuhrman's, who wrote "Eat To Live" is to make your calories count.

He's a vegetarian and I'm not, but I still love his core idea. His idea is to get the most nutrition per calorie eaten. This automatically cuts out a host of highly processed things like pure sugar.

It gives a reason why sugar is bad for you, not because it is sugar, but because all it has is totally nutritionally empty calories, nothing your body needs for structure. Have a look at this page:
nutritiondata.self.com/facts/sweets/
55
92/2

Virtually all zeros in all nutrients. Even 100 grams of sugar has only 1% of the daily needs of one or two minerals. So 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of sugar in a day would get you your needs in that one thing.

So, eat real stuff!

Welcome Heather emoticon Right you are! I find with the Holidays coming up there are so many temptations~so I am practicing my "no thank you" and "maybe a little later". Since I am hosting this year, I get to choose most of the foods being served. Some people are bringing food but I can deal with that. Also, I have found that healthy food does not have to be boring. Most people are willing to try something new, and often find they actually like it. I have been planning my Christmas menu for a few days now. I want to get everything in prior to next weekend when it will be crazy busy in the stores. emoticon

LASSY,

We've crossed paths before. But others on this team don't know me.

I was diagnosed as a type-2 diabetic in 1999. I was on oral medication for that for 12 years, and at the end of that time the maximum dose of it. Then I switched how I ate, accidentally really as my main goal was weight loss, but I got a huge side effect, blood sugar control without medication. So 5 years of that.

I eat way healthier than I did before, and part of that is eating whole foods, not highly processed stuff, which in my mind is sort of pre-chewed, and quickly digested, and is not good for me as I can't manage blood sugar spikes.

I only eat low carb veggies, but I eat quite a few of them.

Welcome James & Mauvemyriad! It is great to see some new and old friends.
Update - I was down another 3 lbs last monday but forgot to weigh myself at the beginning of this week. (I have to change my weight tracker to 147). I have been tracking my blood sugar in the morning before breakfast and 6.1 is the highest it has been in weeks! (it is usually in the 5's) This is good news and I am hoping this will reflect in my next diabetes wellness check up. (late Jan 2017)

For those of you who don't know me, let me tell you a bit about myself. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in Sept. of 2014. Since then I have been on a journey to improve my health and my diabetes. I originally followed the Canada's Diabetic Food Guide recommended by my nutritionist and gained 10 lbs! (my Dr. was not happy!) Then I tried changing things up on my own and stumbled across the SparkPeople website. Yeah!!! I found many teams and eventually settled on the a low carb high fat diet and joined a team that supported this way of eating. I liked it there and had lots of support. Over time (1 1/2 years) lost weight, plateaued for 6 or more mths then gained about 10 lbs back. Neither me or my Dr were happy. So I researched other alternatives. I found Dr. Neal Barnard and his books. He has a plan for diabetics to stabilize their blood sugar levels and be healthy. It does mean going vegan - so I thought why not. If it accomplishes my goal, I'll give it a go. I've been eating vegan (no meat, dairy and very little oil) for 4 1/2 weeks now and it is going great.
I'm not saying this is for everyone but it is working for me.

I try to check in a few times a week but Dec. is one of our very busiest times at work and some days I am too exhausted to even turn on the computer. I am hoping once we are past the holidays I will be able to spend a little more time devoted to this team.

Does anyone else want to share their story? Please join in.

Hi All - and welcome to our team! emoticon Thanks James for the suggestion. This Daily Chat is the most current one as I cannot delete the 2008 one. Please post here if you want to join in the chatting.
I hope to revive this team as it is a good premise but just seems like it was abandoned for what ever reason. The idea here is to support people who want to eat healthy foods for good health. There are many ways in which this can be achieved. I hope that we can support each other in our similarities and differences.
Let the posting begin! emoticon
