Wow, are you by chance related to Alfred Hitchcock? I am impressed! Your short story moved me right out of a 101 degree summer afternoon into this subtle shocker! Thanks for sharing! emoticon

Joseph Sandervall first noticed his wife’s twitching when she was sleeping. Rosalyn Sandervall's left eye started twitching on that California February morning. Joseph looked at his beautiful wife with short gray hair that once was a chestnut brown. She still looked beautiful to him. He felt himself lucky to have her say yes to marrying him 40 years ago this August. He began to massage her shoulders.

She groaned, “No, that’s not helping.” The twitching became more sporadic. First her eyes then her cheek began to twitch. She told Joseph she wasn’t up to making him breakfast that morning. She asked if he wouldn’t mind making himself a bowl of cereal or some toast. Joseph didn’t mind at all. He did feel a little rejected as he made his way that morning to work.

The next morning, Rosalyn woke to the feeling of her head being squeezed in like it was clasped by a vice. Her eyes were bulging and her mouth was dry. Joseph had already left for work without waking her. She wanted to call him but she knew her husband couldn’t do much about her headache. “So this is what a migraine feels like”, she thought. She never had sympathy for people who got headaches. Now she had a new appreciation for migraine suffers. She took a couple Tylenol PM to see if she could sleep through the pain.

After 2 hours of wrestling with the ache at the back of her head, she decided to call her sister, Camille. Rosalyn was in tears. “Camille, my head hurts so bad. I need help. Can you take me to the doctor’s? I don’t know if I can make it there on my own.”

Camille just sat down to watch some TV when her sister called. She would do anything for her big sis so she said, “Sure, Roz, of course, I will be there as soon as I can.” She lived across town, but it shouldn’t take longer than 30 minutes to get there.

When Camille arrived, she knocked and rang the bell several times, but no one answered. Camille found the key under the ceramic frog and let herself in. The back door was open and Rosalyn had her nose against the wooden fence. Her legs were moving and her eyes were half shut.

Camille grabbed her sister and shook her trying to get her out of her state of disorientation.
Rosalyn turned to her sister and opened her mouth agape. Camille was trying to comprehend what was happening to her sister. Rosalyn’s neck went limp and her chin met her chest. Without out raising her head she muttered, “I wonner ware ma thister is?”

Camille stared at her sister. Rosalyn stood there with her chin tucked against her chest and her head to the backyard fence. A white growth started protruding from the back of her neck where the spinal cord bump is. The growth was thin as a bean sprout. On the growth Camille noticed very tiny mite sized bugs. She pressed her finger on one. She noticed a spot on her glasses lens. She took off her glasses and grabbed her magnifying glass from her pocket and looked at the spot which turned out to be a tiny bug. Camille always kept her magnifying glasses handy so she could read the fine print. At a closer look the bug had claws similar to crab claws. It also had unproportionately large mandibles. She turned her magnifying glass on her hand only to find out to her horror her hand was covered by these tiny specs.

She screamed and ran into the house leaving her sister in her non-coherent state. Camille turned on the hot water and started scrubbing. She looked out the kitchen window to see her sister slumped over head first into the gardenias.

Just then Camille’s left eye began to twitch.
