Sure glad you found us "dirt lovers" SMARZ16. We all are connected in some way to the "farm". Hope to get to know you too. Organic farming is growing in Il. they say. It helps fill a niche market.
Much good luck on Ole Sparkie.

Hey Lyle,
A country thank you for the welcome to the team and hello to all the dirt loving stewards of the land out there! My husband and I own our farm in beautiful upstate NY, where we grow certified organic hay, certified organic veggies (we're still picking kale out of the garden - yum!), pastured pigs, and I have my girls - my free range brown egg laying chickens. I didn't grow up on a farm although I have dairy farmer relatives, and I didn't marry a farmer (my husband is probably one of the few accountants in NY state with working man's hands) but I wouldn't trade farm life for city life if I can help it. Since we both work full time off the farm as well (I'm a nurse) it makes for a very busy schedule. Looking forward to meeting and greeting new members and gleaning farming information from those more "well seasoned" than ourselves.

Regards,
Sue

Hey Old Farmers!!! I was raised on a hog farm in rural Bowling Green, Missouri. We had roughly 1500 acres where we raised corn, soybeans, milo, and wheat. My youth was mainly spent in the hay fields. I have now become accustomed to the city life near St. Louis and became a police officer. My days and nights are now spent sitting on my butt, driving around my city, and my body hates me for it. I miss the farming life and try to visit my parents to help out any chance I get.

I'm not really a farmer, but was raised on a family farm in SD. I now am a registered nurse in the Nashville area.

I am looking forward to staying connected to some of you in the rural life. I loved all the work ethic and values that that life taught me. I was just allergic to pollens and mold, and needed the some what cleaner environment of healthcare and the excitement of living in or near a major city.

Blessings,

Oh, yeah, I forgot. I hope the crop is doing good. How long does it take? Our wheat harvest usually takes around a couple weeks. We are drilling wheat now for next year.

Thanks for asking Marlene. I put it in a blog this AM. I called her last night, yesterday went better than expected. They had her walk twice with a walker, went well. So far it wasn't as bad as she expected. I wouldn't be to surprised if she gets her laptop in bed soon. Skeeter

Okay, I understand the combining. Never heard of the phrase start corn. But guess it makes sense. Sounds like you have a pretty good crop. Of course wheat has to be under 13 to take to elevator with out a dock. We had to buy seed wheat as the wheat here was not good. What there was of it.

To start corn is a Ill. phrase meaning to combine corn. It's the earliest I have ever started, moisture is under 20%. Put over 3000 bu. in drying bin, will fill it the rest of way today, another 4000. Only have 70 acres thats this dry, rest will dry in the field some more. Skeeter

Explain start corn? You harvesting corn? We just do wheat and waiting for rain so we can start drilling. It rains all around but not here. It was 90 degrees today but is supposed to be cool again next week and maybe rain.

Good Morning Blessings
If it stops with you, then the blessing will disappear. The blessing will only keep working if it is continuously passed around. If you are a recipient of a blessing, keep the blessing working by being the source of blessing to other people.

Good Morning !!!!

This morning when I wakened
And saw the sun above, emoticon
I softly said, "Good morning, Lord,
Bless everyone I love"

Right away I thought of you
And said a loving prayer ,
That He would bless you specially,
And keep you free from care.

I thought of all the happiness
A day could hold in store,
I wished it all for you because
No one deserves it more.

I felt so warm and good inside,
My heart emoticon was all aglow.
I know God heard my prayers for you,
He hears them all, you know.

Or pass this along to someone else

We had a little rain which we much needed and now the springtoothing is done. Would like to have more rain before starting to drill wheat but will drill soon one way or the other.
The garden has about come to a standstill except for the okra. It is really producing.
Our grandkids are grown. We have three great grands but don't see much of them. Not quite 112 miles but 75. Their mom baby sits at home so does not need a baby sitter most of the time.
Nice to hear from you. I thought I was talking to myself.

DH is doing quite well. I wish he would slow down but no doing that. He is busy putting on fertilizer and getting ready to put a new crop in for next year. The price of seed wheat is out of sight but when you don't have any in the bins you have to pay the price. I feel so much better since I have lost weight and have so much more energy. I got most of my cardio exercise this summer working in the garden. Had an abundance of squash and now lots of okra. I planted some popcorn just for the fun of it, but planted it pretty late. It has little ears so maybe it will produce before frost. My sisters and I had this discussion on e-mail about how our daddy used to plant popcorn.
You have a good day, we are hoping for rain this week. emoticon

Mariene, too bad about your wheat freezing, it sure affected the supply hence all time high price's, those things happen and we have no control over. How is your DH doing now, hope very well? It's sure nice to have your health. I'm going to give blood today for the first time in over 5 years, sure great feeling to be able to.Skeeter

Hi, from Oklahoma. We are wheat farmers and still pretty active. DH had a heart attack in 2001 and sold the cattle that same year but we still farm a lot of ground. This year was not a good year. We had to burn most of the wheat because of a late freeze. Not much of a harvest this year.
I have been on Spark almost a year and a half. I have lost 60 pounds and now struggling to keep it off. Old habits are hard to break. I really don't think you can break them just work to stay away from them.

i live in the Willamette valley in Oregon. Today, i canned green beans, tomato sauce, and froze more zucchini. I also got 5 loads of mushroom compost delivered today, and planned my class tomorrow at a girls scout camp. I'm driving to the camp tomorrow morning to teach the girls how to make soap. We are going to make lemon scented soap I had a rooster take out after a duck today and did quite a lot of damage to the young duck, so have a sick, mangled duck in my kitchen tonight...hope he pulls through...I'm having trouble around some young fruit trees with voles...I've tried a vibrating thingy that cost 16.95 and didn't help at all, tried putting juicy fruit gum down the holes, human urine (hey, I'm desperate), human hair from a barbershop, and several other methods and those voles just keep on keeping on...I'm sure several of my young trees have damaged roots from them. Any advice on how to get rid of voles?

Hi Joy, Glad you are with us. I was raised on a farm & loved the life. I am a city old gal & married a farm implement dealer, so we are somewhat like the farmers. Are you from the state of Oregon or city? I live in central IL. & very near Oregon, IL. Sparkpeople is a great web site & I am enjoying recording my foods, excercise & the encouragement everyone is so generous in sharing. Good luck to you. Anne emoticon

Hi from Oregon, everyone. I'm 61 and run a farm by myself...been divorced for many years. Was raised on a big farm, but now i have only 31 acres and I like to call it a homestead rather than a farm...I utilize just about every inch of the place...raise some livestock, lots of chickens, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, and I have a big orchard and 3 gardens...one an experimental garden, one my truck garden, and one my family garden. I sell produce at 2 farmer's markets, and at 4 grocery stores. Oh, and I raise several kinds of berries, including a new one to me, tayberries, a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry. I'm an organic gardener/farmer. My poultry are free range and their eggs and meat are in high demand. In my experimental garden, I have a lot of fun...It's about 1/2 of an acre and I am experimenting this year with 6 kinds of mulch, heirloom plants, used 6 truckloads of seaweed, ground up, and am anxious to see how the crops do with it in the soil, and I'm raising corn in that garden the way pioneers did...in hills, with 2 smelt fish, 3 seeds of corn, 2 pole bean seeds, and winter squash inbetween the hills. So far, the corn looks great and the beans are being trained to climb the corn stalks and the squash is doing great, as a mulch inbetween the hills...I had trouble with coons at first, trying to get the fish, but cured that problem with fencing and cayenne pepper around the hills. glad I found a farming team on Spark. I had no heat in the barn. I didn't care to bring the lambs in the house (but I did) because it didn't make sense to get them warm and then take them back to the freezing barn. 9 times out of 10, that ewe didn't want the lamb after that.
Raising fats (they are on self feeder and pasture) is so much easier! other than having to buy the corn.

Your experience with lambing brought back memories of farrowing pigs in the cold of the winter. One year the barn was so cold, all I had was heat bulbs for heat, that the were freezing as soon as they came out. I got the bright idea to bring them to house and put in oven to help dry off. Needless to say that was the last time I tried that, the house smelled like pigs for some time. Our life farming is soo much easier today. Let's keep ole SPARKIE going.

We use to have quite a lot of cattle--holsteins that we raised from the bottle. One year, my husband got the brilliant idea of getting in a trailer load (50) of baby calves. they were beef calves. We bottle fed every one of them. We had quite a system set up. Then they started dying on us. Turned out the mother cow was not vaccinated for scours, and being the calves were trucked in, they got sick. We lost 35 of them.
Needless to say, that was the last time he did that.
I used to have a lot of sheep, too. Really liked working with them. I decided that I was going to lamb in April-May enough of this Jan-Feb stuff--but the buck decided differently---so I sold them all before I had to spend another cold night in the barn with them

A great big welcome to you ELLENIRENE. Glad to have you on board. You have more livestock on your farm than we do. My wife noticed a tassel in our sweet corn today so the field corn wont be far behind. Isn't SPARKS just the greatest? emoticon

Hi, decided to join this group after getting a comment on my sparkpage from Lyle.
My husband and I use to do a lot of farming.(South Dakota) We rented the ground for about 15 years. We always said when that ground came up for sale, we would buy it. When we got the chance to buy it, we penciled and penciled but couldn't come up with any profits to show. So we let the land go. It is bottom ground, so this year it is under water. Hopefully, it was a good decision.
We have 80 acres of native grass that I swathe in late August. We have a few fat cattle, lots of ducks, cats and one dog.
