I'm required to go to squadron PT at the base gym two days a week. The other three of my five days of cardio, I go to the base gym when it's really hot (I'm in Texas!), or run through our huge airplane display park. For strength training, I'm doing the exercises on SP. I'll probably start hitting the weight room on my next deployment (which is coming up pretty soon).

Pilates concentrates on your core... no matter what extremities you are moving around you're working your central core to keep it all together. They have videos to work at home (google Winsor Pilates for more info) but they also have machines (which I personally like because I can lay down and work out at the same time (ultimate in lazy!), but it gives you a really good work out. It doesn't necessarily make you lose weight, but tones you up pretty well.

I did part of a kickboxing video that had quite a bit of jump roping in it the other day. My calves still hurt! But, I do love to hula hoop. My teens and I all have our own hula hoop. I need to get out to do that.

I live near Lake Michigan so we go swimming at the beach on Wednesdays to cool off. And we do more evening activity. In a few minutes we are going bike riding.

You are all doing great!

Warmly,

Beth

My concern when starting the jump rope was getting all tangled up in the rope...however I have order a jump snap which is a ropeless jump rope. I will let you know what it is like when it arrives!

I can't imagine jumping rope or trying to hula hoop again. That may be what I need, though. I appreciate all these ideas. I know I will get burnt out if I keep doing the same thing.
What is pilates? Is it like yoga? Can beginners do it?

Has anyone tried to hula hoop lately?? My daughter brought one home the other day... it is impossible... This whole getting older (not growing up) thing happened while I wasn't looking!!

I Live in Malta and @ the moment it is terribly hot outside, but i have found a way to exercise inside by selecting some nice house music which makes you move and i exercise with it and also singing while exercising just to enjoy myself.

As for the jump rope, I figured out how many jumps I can do per minute, and keep track of the number of jumps and then calculate my time. Generally speaking I cannot go more than 30 sec - a minute. and then I rest. I hope to work up to going a little longer per set.

Good luck!

Yes, Billy can be tough... but work at your own pace... if you can only do one set of each exercise do it... the last thing you want to do is turn yourself off of that exercise program. It is intense...and may not be for everyone, but give it a chance!

Good luck!

I've only worked on one of those DVD's so far. I'm trying to work my way up to getting thru one.

I've also bought a Pilates machine recently. I used to have a Pilates trainer and found that machine really works well for me. I found one on QVC and got it last month.

I like the jump rope idea. Maybe I'll try that this week!

I'm from the Dallas area, and I agree that it's way too hot to be exercising outdoors (at least in TX). I love being outside, but lately we've been confined to doing things indoors. I have a dance aerobics tape called Grind Workout that I do 5 times a week. It's fun because you dance your way through 45min. of high-intensity cardio. I don't even feel like I'm working out! I've also signed up for a Body Blaster class at my local gym to keep me motivated. When I have someone else to answer to (my friend who's taking the class w/me), I'm more likely to go. I've bought a balance ball and a set of 8-lb. weights which I use 5 times per week to work out every body part I can think of :-)

Exercise videos are a great way to get your exercise in. I live in small town and gym facilities are limited... so exercise videos is the way I do it. I havea collect of Billy Blanks videos that I rotate through. It gives me a complete workout. As an alternative, though, I have invested in a skipping rope... and over the last week, I have been skipping 10-15 minutes (not all at once) every second day. It is also a great cardio workout, although at times very tiring.

I wish you all the best!

My exercise so far has been limited to inside - exercise dvd's. I've started one by Leslie Sansone. She has tons of tapes for "walking" inside. It's actually marching in place, but I definitely get a workout. Good for a beginner. Too hot in TX to do much outdoors. That has always been one of my excuses, anyway. :-)
What does everyone else do? emoticon
