Morning!

My motivation is the same as Mermaid's. I'm turning 40 this year and I don't want to do it fat.

OK...that's one reason. The other reason is for health. I was about 215-220 one time in my life. A few years ago I had an illness that caused me to alter my life and the way I look at things. I feel better thinner and want to be at least 160 (no lower per doctor's orders). I figure that I can lose 15 or so by my 40th at the end of December!

The pains we take to mark the time
mostly show as poor decisions
and they pack on pound-for-pound
often ending in cruel derisions

Let TODAY be your sweet answer
to the "WHEN?" of yesterday
Let THIS MOMENT be the now
and GRAB claim of that change TODAY

I'll tell you of molehills beaten
you tell me of mountains conquered
together we'll make way for others
and in fitness, we'll win as one

Hey Queen, I won't be at my ideal weight for the cruise but am planning on getting down to 135 pound. That will just put me in the healthy range of weight for my height. I prefer to use a tape measure to gage my progress so I have not put up one of those weight tracker thing-a-ma-bobs. They actually scare me a little bit. I do strength training 3 times a week and don't want to get bummed if the scale stops moving. :)

Yesterday's choices seem to haunt
wanting to taint our progress true
twisting what is simple, focused
into days we'll hate and rue

Let this day be one of newness
let new choices live this day
change your answers to old questions
grow as ne'er before and say

"I'm a stronger person because
I choose to see my self as real
I want to reach my next plateau
I want to live, and laugh, and feel"

Be the person you look up to
be a friend to your own set
and set your goals too high, too high
and celebrate the goals you've met.

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Philippians 4:8

I had put on weight after I left my 42+ hour a week job. Been trying to follow eating plans and circuit trining from the Abs Diet book. I did have some success with it when I actually made myself exercise. LOL go figure. While shopping for a nice dress for formal night on our upcoming cruise I had "tape measure and size shock". I stumbled on this site while reading a cruise line message board on - How to lose weight before your cruise?- I instantly signed up. I really like the nutrition tracker, I had no idea I was eating that much. This is my first week and I met almost all my goals, and lost an inch in my waist and hips. Being able to track my progress here and noticing that I am losing my belly a little bit at a time keeps me going. Embrace and rejoice in the small victories.

My motivation is mostly my 3 boys. I want to have the energy to do stuff with them. Also, all the women on my mom's side of the family are very obsese, have adult onset diabetes and various other health issues realted to being overweight. I want to break that cycle in my family. So here I am at 35 getting started finally on a healthy lifestyle. It's never too late, right?

Queenofschmooze Those are some great motivations. Just remember not to be too hard on yourself. I work in dietary at a hospital and if they do not like me for who I am them that is their problem, but I can see your point too.

Mummy For motivation do something fun with the kids. Take them for a walk in the stroller or go to the park. That can burn a lot of calories, even dancing around the living room could be fun. I too get board easly but totally enjoy my walks, as long as they are outside or I can watch TV.

Christy That is a great idea. School came top of my list of priorities too, but now it is second to my health.

To everyone else your motivations sound awesome.

My boyfriend and I have been together for over 5 years. We've been waiting to get engaged/married until we had both finished college, gotten jobs and saved up enough for the ceremony. Well, I just graduated in May, am employed, and he graduates this December! So I have a year or so while we save to reach my goal weight and fitness level.

Yesterday held the promises
and tomorrow holds the key
but today is comprised of decisions spied
while selecting the day's reverie

What will you focus on?
What be thy goal?
Wherein doth thy hope lie?

Be mindful of path,
give not in to wrath
and let patient successes thee drive

For one day quite soon
you'll sing a new tune
enchanted
(and thinner)
you arrived!

I don't have a whole lot of motivation. I gained weight during both pregnancies (which were so close together) I was invalid during and after my second pregancy and I think I got depressed(?). Some days I look at my daughter and I feel a powerful urge to lose the weight and other days I feel like there really isn't any point. What does it matter? I get bored easily. This is why I think this community can help me. Sort of like a new start everyday.
I want to look good again
I want to feel good again
I want to be strong
I want to be able to do anything I want to.

So many directions I can go with this one:

# 1 -- My mirror is so not good to me! It tells the truth when my minds eye does not. I remember once upon a time weighing in at 122 and wearing size 5 jeans... I see these great outfits in the stores and I don't seem to remember that I'm no longer 135 and wearing the 9 jeans until I try to get into them... and truthfully, I am down right tired of Lane Bryant!

# 2 - I have several "jobs" all circling around healthy lifestyles.
a. I work for a company who's emphasis is on Nutritional Supplements. I'm in the Michigan office and it's embarrassing meeting up with the L.A. office at conventions - we don't look so healthy next to them.
b. I also work as a Chiropractic Assistant - not a very healthy looking greeting as the patients walk thru the door.
c. I'm also a massage therapist working on building my own clientelle. See a & b above.

# 3 - and my most important motivation - I'm tired of my boyfriend loving me more than I love myself.

It's time to get it done!

Erin Becoming a nutritionist is not a bad idea, just remember not to be too hard on yourself, and remember slow and steady wins the race.

Jellibean Long hours in itself are hard on you especially if you are on your feet all day. The food choices will help you become more energized.

I've always been overweight but after I got married 7 years ago my husband and I gained 50 lbs together. He thinks I'm beautiful just like I am, which is great... but I'd like to look in the mirror and feel good about what I see.

Also, I have a 4 year old son and a 3 month old daughter that I'd like to pass along healthy habits to. I can teach them now but I'd love to be their example.

My motivations for joining Spark are two fold. First, I gained about 20 pounds last year when I went from walking 2-4 miles per day at college to working a more or less sedentary job. Second, I've always felt out of shape and unhealthy. I want to be able to run around - literally - without getting winded or embarrassed. It's better to get in the right frame of mind while I'm young so I can be healthy when I'm older.

I initially wanted to lose my excess body weight because I was tired all the time, and I wanted to be able to keep up with the 6 little people in my life. They are my pseudograndchildren. Now that I have started losing weight that people can see, I am motivated by compliments. I also want to dig down to that last box of clothing in storage and be able to wear 10 or 12 instead of 20.

Hi all,
My motivation is mostly just not liking what I see in the mirror. I lost a lot of weight in 2002-03, but I have regained about half of it. It's time to take off this fat suit.

My motivation is being healthy and fitting in my clothes again. Someday I hope to be a Nutritionist and want to set and example for my patients and also for my younger siblings. I also really like clothes. My closet is basically a collection of clothes because they don't fit the correct way anymore from falling victim to the "freshmen 15". Whenever i'm out in public i'm so self consious and feel fat. I go into the mall and see all of the pretty clothes that I wish I could fit into if only I were smaller. I hope I can acheive this by Feb.! emoticon

What's motivating me to reach my goals is a strong desire to feel good about myself. I want to go to a mall and not feel like I don't fit in. I want to buy my clothes in the regular sized section. I want to have the energy to go for long walks with my husband and dogs. I want to feel I look beautiful. I want to run a marathon.

Hi! This is my first post. :)

I have two motivators. Being healthy and looking great! But one thing that's helping me to get there is thinking of my friend from years ago, Barbara. She was in her 60s or so, a grandma, and absolutely stunning -- young, active, amazing. I think back to her boundless energy and the compliments she regularly got from men half her age, and realize THAT's the kind of older lady I'd like to become. I need to start now if I want to be there by then.

It works if you do it. It doesn't if you don't. It's that simple.

My motivation is that I returned to school last week (after not seeing my boyfriend for 3 months) to realize that my boyfriend does not seem remotely attracted to me anymore. I think our relationship of 6 years was fading anyway, but if we do break up I will NOT let "you let yourself go" be one of the reasons.

Beyond that, there are the more important reasons: better health, longer life, higher quality of life, holistic living. It's just that the boyfriend reason has enough sting to give me the kick in the butt I needed to get moving.

My motivation is by far my boyfriend and his support. Together we want to lose 60 lbs by Christmas. Together we will be able to accomplish anything and he has taught me that. I used to be 5'3" and 100-115. I was riding horses frequently and worked my way to the top. I was 2nd in the state and 4th in the nation in my division. I was the first teenager to win the Jr. Horse class in an org. that was in exsistance for 35 plus years. Thats when I starting getting hurt more and more. When I was hurt I turned to food because I thought I was letting my family down. Rapidly I began putting on weight and then I went back to public school and kept it under control for awhile. Then college started and here I am... 20 heavier than when I started over a year ago. So I am not only wanting to lose that 20 that I gained but also old weight... I would like to be down to 140 by Christmas but 135 eventually. PLEASE HELP ME.

Fuzz Motivation is a hard thing. You will always have your ups and down's but if you work hard enough you will make it through them. Spark People have lots of support. It helps a lot. Great job on your 25 pounds too by the way.

My motivation is to have my clothes fit again! Another motivation is my husband. He is an avid distance runner and I'd like to be able to maintain my health with him.

My main motivation is:
*my son, I want to be as healthy as I can for him and give him a good example of it.
*myself, I don't want my self esteem to be low because I'm overweight.

For me what got me started was waking up one morning and just not liking what I was seeing in the mirror and knowing that it didn't have to be this way. It made me very self-consicious to be truthful.

What motivates me is -

1)I want to see my daughter get married and be around to be a grandmother who is active
2)Wanting to do things that I haven't done in awhile
3)Knowing that I can reach my goals but knowing that I need to be patient with myself.

What motivates me?

This is hard for me to answer.

1. My overall health would probably be my first motivation.

2. Random people telling me how good I look. If I look good now, wait till I hit my goal.

3. Friends and family giveing me support along the way.

The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called Confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flats called Jobs. But, if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, insurance called Faith, a driver called Jesus, you will make it to a place called Success.

I've been "meaning to lose weight" for the past 6 years since I started gaining a lot my junior year of high school, but just this winter got serious and was introduced to SparkPeople by a friend. When the going gets tough I get my motivation from wanting to:
*Be a good role model as a physical therapist
*Get to a healthy weight for when I'm ready to have kids
*Still be hiking and dancing when I'm in my 70s and after
*Really be proud of my fitness level and how I look
