Now that Christmas has passed, it will be almost another year before we can listen to the cheery music of the holiday seasons. For many, it's the time to access the year and to plan for the new year which will shortly begin. To help those that are resolved to change some behavior in the new year, here are some hints from "Firming Resolve" by Dan Gordon, in the latest edition of UCLA magazine.

1) Establish a reward system. First set achievable goals, then check in on a regular schedule and pat yourself on the back for meeting a goal. To acknowledge your success, give yourself a treat, something cool, something you want.

2) Tell the world. You will make yourself more accountable if you recruit family and friends to check in on your progress towards your goals. If you choose positive and supportive people, they can cheer you on. Also, consider people that will feel a bit let down by your failure. Fearing others' disappointment can be as motivating as being applauded for success.
