I've heard of it, but I haven't heard any of the songs from it yet, I'll have to make it a point to do so

Anyone heard the new Borknagar album? It seriously doesn't even sound like the same band anymore. They've completely eschewed their normal metal aesthetic and adopted kind of a folksy, light rock sound complete with a re-imagining of one of the classic songs from The Olden Domain, "Oceans Rise" that has kept me listening to it on repeat. I could easily see this finding airplay in a more mainstream setting than I might have expected from Borknagar... Even still, I would call this a marked improvement over their last two releases, particularly "Epic." Their overall instrumental arrangements on recent albums prior to this new album "Origin" have not been as appealing as they were on Quintessance, Olden Domain, or The Archaic Course.

"Origin" really allows the band to show off some of their best songcrafting traits, and allows Vintersorg to exercise a lot more of his clean vocals, which in my opinion has always been a far greater strength of his than his growling vocals. I think though that one of the more admirable parts of this album isn't the fact that they have explored a completely new style, but that they had the balls to do so and release it under the "Borknagar" band name instead of as a side-side-side-project.
