Charlie, if you're having problems with your shins and feet hurting, and shoes falling apart, it sounds like you need to have your running shoe needs evaluated. Stores that specialize in running can take measurements of your feet and recommend a good shoe for you. From everything I've read about running, shoes are the one place that you really can't cut corners. That's not to say that they have to be expensive, but you've really got to be sure you've got the right fit to run.

I hope you're able to find a good fit!

Hi I am Charlie, I am 37 and a year ago my A1C was close enough to diabetic they had me start checking my sugar. I have now lost 67lbs from 365lbs by diet change and walking. I am now out of the danger zone. I am now trying to start running. I run about a quarter of a mile then walk a quarter. I don't get to winded but my feet and shins hurt. Do I need to stop and just walk or keep pushing on. I need to up the intesity. Also I go through running shoes fast. Any advise on a brand that doesn't break down in a month?

I personally have downloaded podcasts for my C25K runs. I like Chubby Jones (chubbyjones.com) and have also found others through the podcast store in iTunes (all free!). I like the podcasts better than the apps, as I can just upload them to my ipod nano and not have to have my phone with me for runs. So check that out too- lots of different music options available too!

I use the RunDouble app (for Android). It is free.

There is also a C25K - 5K Trainer app that is free.

C25K free It has ads, and I can live with that, or spend a buck and lose the ads.

I would agree with building a walking base, 30 minutes 3 times a week. I did it to get in the habit of going out 3 times a week. Once I was comfortable walking, I started the C25K. Don't be afraid to repeat weeks if you need to.

I find it helpful to remind myself that it's OK to repeat a week if I need to, and that since I'm trying to improve MY health, the only comparison to make is what I could do a week or a month ago versus what I can do now.

If I could do it over again, I wouldn't look too far ahead in the workout plan. At the start, it sounded impossible and I felt intimidated by some of the workout plans. By the time you get to the hurdles, you'll most likely be able to handle them. And if not, there's no rule that you only have nine weeks to complete the program, and you're only competing against the old you, so double-back and re-do that week's workouts and try again.

Also, if you are brand new to exercise, you need to get a good walking base. 30 min, 3 days a week before you start a couch to 5k.

Get fitted for good running shoes, a couch to 5k plan, and just go!

I am using the RunDouble app. I started outdoors but ended up joining a gym so I could use the treadmill. Weather doesn't cooperate much around here.

Good luck!

you can download one of the free apps, print out the hard copy and track it on your watch, I used the free C25K app that made it easier. Then just do it. Other than that I'd need a more detailed question.

There's no judgement here. It took me a week to finish Week 1 day 1, I worked up to it over time and just did what I could. I'm into week 4 now.
