Did W2D3 this morning. I am amazed at how much better it went than D1. I wasn't out of breath at all until Interval 5 of the running and it was up an incline!

I'm really excited about this program!

Don't you love it when you can get excited about future runs?

I tried my w5D3 again today, and it felt much better. Running an hour earlier really made a difference.

I did W2D2 this morning. It went so much more smoothly than D1. That gave me quite a boost and I'm looking forward to D3.

Thank you!

I was lucky that I was able to find a local 5k that is at the end of my c25k program. It has really helped keep me accountable.

good job on those .4 pounds!

My weight had stayed steady ever since I started c25k, but I lost 1.1 pounds when I weighed myself yesterday. Hopefully that was the start of weight loss again.

Just finished Week 8!! I can't believe I am on the last week. I have my first 5K (running) on Saturday. I can't believe I am a runner. I think my next goal will be to run a 10 minute mile for 30 minutes. I think I am still going to need goals after I'm done so I can still have motivation to run.

I'm back from vacation as of yesterday. We left sunday, spent all week in San Antonio & waterpark in Newbraunfels on thursday. It was awesome. I didn't have the time/energy to exercise, but we walked ALL DAY every day, so it counted. I only gained .2 lbs, which I don't consider bad for a vacation where we ate out nearly every meal. I'll blog & add pics later.

Ali_Cat I just noticed your post.

My daughter was a competitive swimmer for many years. She had to stop after her senior year of high school because she had done so much damage to her shoulders. She's starting her junior year of college and still can't run much because she says it hurts her shoulders.

She has no cartilage in her joints and the pounding from running causes the bones to rub. If you've had any shoulder damage in the past that could be part of your problem.

The journey is the reward.

Hi All,

You guys are all doing wonderfully! Here's to hard work!!

It's time I get back into the game. I haven't really run since last fall where I got mostly to the end of the C25k, but then didn't have a race, and just tapered off with my running. That said, I'm very active - 1 to 2 hours of vigorous walking +hills a day, so my goal will be to improve the length of time I can actually run vs. walk.

I started today at W3D1, completed it on Random hills, alternating 4.0 walking and 6.0 running. 30 minutes is just not enough fitness for me at this stage, so I then ran W3D2 back to back, eliminating the incline, well to about 1.5, and then alternating 4.0 and 6.0. I'm feeling good!

Happy running!

A friend of mine has the Nike+ and hers was off as well. She wore it when she ran her first 5K a couple of months ago and it told her she had run farther than 3.1 miles so the whole time she was training, thinking she was running 3.1 miles, she was really coming up short. Kinda frustrating for her.

CATHERINEL66 -

Does the Nike+ have a setting where you can input your stride length? My best guess is that if it does (and if you are both walking and running) then it won't be really accurate because your stride length running is generally longer than your stride walking. If there is no setting then most likely it's operating like a generic pedometer and each time your foot strikes the pavement it registers a "step" and associates an average stride length from that.

If there is no adjustment that you can make to the device then I would recommend using the garmin and Nike+ for a couple more runs. Then you can average the results and calculate on your own.

Does anyone else use the Nike+ ipod gizmo?

Here's my issue - feedback welcome.

The mileage is off. To verify this, I ran the other day with the Nike+ ipod thing AND a garmin hand-held GPS unit.

Nike+ says I ran 1.1 miles.
Garmin says 2.4

This is a huge problem because if the mileage is wrong, it messes up the speed calculation as well.

I am NOT wearing the Nike+ shoes, but have the little shoe pod tied on to my laces.

Any thoughts or experiences with this?

I just finished W1D1 last night... sort of. I managed to do a couple iterations of the run / walk but then the heart rate was topping 184 and my heart was starting to hurt and I had to walk the rest of the way.

At this point week 4 is scaring the heck out of me - I can't imagine running 5 minutes straight at this point.

I have the yearly 5K run/walk I do each Sept coming up. I really want to incorporate some running and blow my personal best out of the water. Hopefully in 8 weeks I'll see some accomplishment.

In the meantime, I've noticed SEVERE shoulder pain in one shoulder when I'm running. Has anyone experienced this? Any thoughts?

ALOFA and PAISLEY, sorry about the aches, i hope they get better soon...yes we are overweight, and our bodies are getting used to this hard work. however, we shall keep keeping on, and we shall rest when we need to....

I am off to repeat W5D3, will let you know how it goes. Want to do it early so that i have ample rest time till Monday. My knees ache, but i need to do this for my mind and heart. Wish me luck!!!

My legs ache and are sore sometimes when I run to many days in a week. This week I ran 4 times which is more then normal and my legs were really sore when I ran the last time like I overdid it. The running surface might have something to do with it. It might take you a little while to get used to the new surface.

I know I'm overweight, which will put some strain on my joints,, howeer I've switched to running on a Treadmill as opposed to a Track @ our local school.. Could running on treadmill be causing the pain??-- please dont tell me NO YOUR JUST FAT... My sister already gave me that answer! lol

Just did W1D1 for like the 3rd time now...I've started this program but never finished it. I really want this time to be the time I stick with it through the end!

It started out really easy for me yesterday but by the time I was on the 2nd to last and last 60 second runs I had to tell myself "Just to that telephone pole" just so I would keep going. I actually at one point responded to the voice on my ipod that asked if I was ready...my answer was no lol but I still ran.

Hey Everyone!!! I did it!!! Almost emoticon I tugged on the Emergency Stop Thread a little too hard with 30secs to go and the machine stopped!!! I groaned out loud!!! I felt so bad....you know almost doesn't count? I know i should rest tomorrow, but i am going to repeat today, because i ended on such a low note....and yet the finish line was in sight. I almost hate treadmills!!! I am considering not using the emergency stop thread anymore, it has sabotaged me twice. But i was feeling great almost all through. I reduced my running speed to 7kph for about 4minutes, and then increased it to 8kph for the last 2 minutes. the rest was done at 7.5kph.

On a better note, it means that i ran 19minutes, 30secs, which is a personal record!!! I want to start Week 6 on Monday.....but i think i should repeat D3 tomorrow... emoticon

I am checking out Virtual Runners immediately after this!!!

Happy Running Everybody, and have a great weekend!!! emoticon

So I have never ran a race but my husband ran lots, some tips he gave me for before my up coming race, Rest the day before or do a shorter run like 1-2 miles, eat pasta the night before, drink lots and lots of water the day before, do not drink alot that day before the race it will give you a side ache. Pace yourself on the race, run it like you would at home, everyone will start out faster then normal and then cant keep up their normal pace. You can walk parts of it if you want, he told me to plan your walks and not just walk whenever you get tired because thats bad training for your body. Run a mile then walk 1-2 run a mile then walk 1-2. Those are some of the things I am doing in my training, but my first race is August 14th so I will let you know if it works then!

Just completed Week 7 Day 2. The last 5 minutes are still tough. I was wondering if anyone has had that runner high I've heard about. I feel good after a run, but I don't know if I feel addicted to it yet,LOL. I guess I am going to have to pay attention to how I feel after different exercises.

Hi all,

I found the quote on one of the other running teams that I joined!
Even if I am last! I know how hard I worked to get to the point that I am.
The 5ks are just a goal so that I keep running!
If I am not working toward something then I will be lazy and not run at all!
I sign up for the races to keep me motivated!
If I am not last I will be cheering on everyone behind me!
Seabreeze, I will defiantly check out your team, that sounds like another good motivator!

I know if I can do it then you girls can do it too!

Hey team!

Finished W4D2 yesterday, and as I said in the week 4 thread, I will probably repeat this week next week. I know week 5 has the 20 minute run at the end. For some reason my heart is in high gear lately, so no matter how slow I am running, I don't know if I should run longer.

I love the quote "Dead Last Finish is greater than Did Not Finish which greatly trumps Did Not Start."
I think I will add it to my signature line for now.

Speaking of that signature line...check out the team I am co-leading. We don't have very many members yet, but races are scheduled 2 times each month. [Shamless Plug]

Paisley, that is such a great quote!!!!

I wish you all happy running, and the best in the 5k runs. There are not many in my town, but i shall be running my own on the treadmill and on a route mapped out at hoe when i finally get there. In early September we are going to visit a friend and he runs 5k daily, so i shall take that as my 1st race.....i already know i shall be second and last, but hey, that is ok!!!!

It is rest day today, and off to W5D3 tomorrow!!!! I am excited about it, and also a bit scared....20 minutes!!!! WOW!!!! YES I CAN!!!!

Paisley, Thank you for sharing that quote. I have been struggling with my fear of being too slow and being last in the race. I am terrified I will make it to the end and no one will be there. I know it is all in my head and that just doing it is the real win and it doesn't matter if I am last. I also know that someone will be at the finish waiting for me. emoticon

I like that quote. It takes a lot of positive self-talk to keep going, some days. It's too easy to let embarrassment hold me back. But over time I've realized that even at my top weight of 297 lbs, there are things I'm capable of that lighter people are not. And sometimes it's fun to surprise people. I'm the largest person in my yoga classes, but I'm one of the most flexible. At my old gym I used to get a kick out of the gymrats staring at me as I ADDED weights to the leg press that some skinny buff chick had just walked away from without clearing.

There are victories in every action, if we choose to see them.

I cannot make myself be thin today, but I CAN be healthier by making a few smart choices. I focus on what needs to be done today and tomorrow takes care of itself.

Paisley, I share your fear but I'm determined not to let it stop me. I signed up for 5K end of September then found one in my hometown on a day I happen to be visiting and figured, why not sign up? So I'm aiming for early August now, when I'll be in the last week of the program. I know from growing up there that the odds are good someone is going to see me and say "look at that fat girl go!" They might even shout it out loud and laugh with their friends. It's small town entertainment. But they WON'T be saying "look at that fat girl sitting on the sidelines dreaming about waddling through the race on her own some day." I'd rather be laughed at for doing than for being inactive.

And as someone else said, those people don't count. The ones that count will be chearing me on.

I cannot make myself be thin today, but I CAN be healthier by making a few smart choices. I focus on what needs to be done today and tomorrow takes care of itself.

What we 'think' others are thinking and what they are really thinking are often greatly different.

People usually are 'thinking' about themselves.

The people who COUNT are the ones that are thinking..."Wow, I wish I could run like that!!! Good for her."

People who don't COUNT are those that think negatively or find fault with someone who is trying to be better, to be healthier, to take care of themselves. These people DO NOT COUNT!

It kind of sounds selfish but my biggest fear is that I will be the fat girl thats last! I know I shouldn't have that fear! I just need to concentrate on running it! I have an overly competitive nature and I know that I will not be able to be competitive at running right now!

Paisley_17 you can do it! It's amazing what race day excitement can do for you. Even if you do end up walking some of it...you'll do far better than you would've if you'd never started c25k. My longest run before my first 5k was 2.5 miles. I almost didn't do the race because I was so hung up on having to run it all. I finally allowed myself just to experience it and not worry about the results. I did end up being able to run it all but even if I hadn't it would've been a life changing experience for me. Keep up the great work!

Hey e1!

PAISLEY_17: Good luck on your first 5K. I have not been 'brave' enough to sign up for one yet. My advice: Have fun with it.

BUTTERFLYBLUE67: I would like to continue with that C210K eventually too. I will see if I can find it. There is probably a link posted somewhere for it.

Happy running!

Hey Caliteachergirl, I know how you feel I did 13 weeks of the 9 week program of couch to 5 k and the scale barely moves. I started couch to 10 k today. I feel so awesome. My energy and endurance has greatly improved. I also see the difference in my clothing. They all fit, feel, and look much better on me. People have asked me if I have lost a lot of weight. 6 lbs is not a lot but the way I feel and how I eat has changed drastically so I'll take it. You'll see a great improvement overall when your done even if the scale says the same. My healthier eating started about a week ago. First time I've been consistent with my calorie ranges. Just automatically didn't want to eat unhealthy almost subconsciously rather then consciously changed my eating habits. It's like my body is craving healthy. Be patient it will come.

Hey all!

I signed up to do my first 5K in October which was plenty far away! Now I found one in my town in August so I signed up for that! I hope I can do it! I can run 2 miles now so in a month I have to increase my running by 1 mile! I'm really nervous for the first one! Any pointers?

Hey RUNNERS!

EMMARAIN: I agree with AKATUJE.

How do I know when I am ready to move on? I listen to my body - does anything worrisome hurt, like my knees or IT band? How was my heart rate and endurance? If these are okay...I say try the next week and then listen again.

Do you have good running shoes? I bought new shoes and ran in them yesterday for the first time. I noticed today when I got up my left foot was stiff. Good thing the shoes are guaranteed for 10 days. I will use them again and see how it goes.

Next week is WEEK 4 for me......Can't wait to see how I do.

Such a great feeling....

Did week 6 Day 3 today!! I can't believe I ran for 25 minutes. I have to say that it didn't start out great. The treadmill I was on in the beginning kept stopping. So my 5 minute warm up was a little stop and go. But I switched right when I was suppose to run and then everything went great. I did feel like I was radiating heat when I was done though. I feel better and stronger, and I think I look better but there has been no movement on the scale or inches on hips, waist, thigh. I'm sure it has to be diet. It is really hard for me to figure out what is quick, easy healthy and not boring to make. Exercise is just easier to get a handle of. Diet will be my next goal.

EMMARAIN, how do we know we are ready to move on? For me i just move on and see how i fare. I have realised that running is as much a mental game as a physical one. AS long as i am not short of breath or hurting, i go on. I always think i will not manage, but then i manage!!!! The first week was tiring for me, by the end of the third or so run i was always wondering how i would gt there. I use the Christian Indie c25k, and i love it. I am now going onto week 5, and i was thinking of repeating week 4 but i shall move on and see how i fare......

Hope this helps you....

Happy running everyone!!!

You are all doing awesome! Its so encouraging and motivating to hear of your successes and overcoming hurdles! Doing the things you thought you couldn't do!!

Tomorrow is W1D3 for me and I'm not sure I'll be ready to move on to W2. How did you know you were ready to move on? I'm listening to Robert Ullri's(?) podcast for C25K training and near the end of the first week audio he says something like "you should be feeling the effects of running but not be tired or out of breath" ?!?! Is he serious? Is this what I am waiting for before I can safely and reasonably move on? I'm definitely a Chubby Runner but I am really excited about this and would really like to do my first 5k on Sept 12 Race for the Cure. Is it reasonable to aim for this? Right now my calves are burning like crazy at the end of my 60 seconds but I am able to jog through each interval and make it through the workout. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I am finally on w4d2. I got sick inbetween d2 and d3 and then the kiddies got sick so I redid w3d2 and d3 so that I wouldn't overdue myself since I slacked off for a little over a week.

But, my goodness I thought I was going to die lol I did w4d1 yesterday and I had to slow my speed down during the 5 mins run/jog. I raised it more during the walk and the 3 min run/jog but hopefully the rest of the week will be better.

I also found that I make better time outside than I do on the treadmil. But, I feel more comforatable on the treadmil for now so I am going to continue to do use it. On my off days I walk as many places as I can. Even with wearing sunblock and reapplying it every hours I still am getting a tan but my legs are looking fab!

My weight is leaving, slowly but surely!

Hey e1!

W3D3 today.

I am a very slow runner. No way can I keep up with the suggested pace in the program and also keep my heartrate from skyrocketing.

I've learned that even though I am slow, when my heart rate monitor starts beeping, I slow down even more. It is amazing how slow I can run and still call it running!!!

My treadmill doesn't have a ton of features...it does have an incline, and I have raised it up a bit, but I have no way of telling how far-there is no gauge, lol.
And the only thing I do know for sure, is that the distance is off. According to it, it takes me all of my 5 minute warmup and through my first run to reach 1/4 mile...Outside on the park track, I made it all the way around the 1/4 mile loop and halfway around again before the initial 5 minutes was up.

I finished W4D3 today, and it was great. I could not believe i did not stop during any of the runs...(D1 i was too tired, D2 i accidentally stopped the treadmill)but i was also very proud of myself. I am a little scared of next week, as the runs will keep getting longer and longer...but i think i can do it!!!

I need a running buddy....anyone starting W5 on Monday?

I miss running outdoors.... i hope that after a month of the treadmill i shall be able to quickly assimilate...nothing beats the fresh air and the scenery!! I run on a very slight incline(0.5 or 1), but walk on a higher one (4 or 6).

Happy Running everyone!!!! emoticon

Sasari319,

I'm curious if you were using any incline when running on the treadmill. I just finished Week2 on the treadmill, because I don't have the nerve to do it outside yet, LOL! But I'm using a 1 degree incline on the treadmill, hopefully to simulate the outdoors. Let me know what you were doing, so I know what to expect. Thanks!

Just completed Week 6 Day 2! I'm a little nervous, because from now on it all jogging/running, no more walking breaks. I'm feeling good about it. I ran the full 20 minutes at the end of Week 5. I can't seem to find a 5K in my area. I am in Southern California. I checked cool runnings, but there was nothing for a few months. Anyone know of other sites to find 5ks.

I can't deal with this 90 degree heat in NY! I have to wait until after 7:30 to go out to do my run. By then the temperature is bearable.

Well, today was a little bittersweet for me. I have signed up for my first 5k in December, and decided it was time to get outside and stop relying on my air conditioning and treadmill.
Got to the park, and started...On the treadmill I was on week 4. Outside I couldn't get through the first run!! Maybe halfway, and it was uphill, but still...anyways, I walked/jogged double the distance my treadmill says I usually do in the same time, so my aged machine is doing something wrong, lol.
Just gotta keep at it, I guess, I may wind back to W3 and start with shorter runs, since I am not used to any hills, or heat, or the Florida humidity.

Every journey starts with a single step, every step motivated by a single thaught, but nothing happens without God, choose to go with him and you can accomplish anything!

7K ~ 42:12
8K ~ 48:27
10K ~ 58:30
Half-Marathon ~ 2:17:44

Your time sounds pretty good to me. I don't know that "toughing it out" and not walking is the way to go. If you read up on Runner's World Jeff Galloway's Run Walk Method, a lot of people actually improve their times by adopting a "Run Walk" program. If they don't improve their time, they finish "completely fine" and ready for the next race. Galloway has used his method to run "injury free" for over 20 years. He's got a few books out on the topic, including his training books for the Half and the Full Marathon.
Good job on your race though! Great time and running at altitude is always harder if you're not used to it.

emoticon I did it! I ran my first 5K this morning in 30:12 in beautifully sunny 65 degree weather. My first 5K since completing Couch to 5K was the Firecracker 5K in Brevard, NC, located in the picturesque western North Carolina mountains.

Not only was this my first 5K race, but it was my first race at altitude. Brevard is about 2,800 miles above sea level while I'm used to running at sea level in West Palm Beach. The altitude wasn't anything I noticed however.

What was most difficult for me were the hills! Near the beginning was a short steep hill and along the route were several other long inclines. I'll honestly admit that I walked for about 2 minutes total over the course. Hills are something very difficult to simulate in Florida, but I know I need to practice this more by running some bridges.

As I've read in many other people's posts, all that matters is you're still moving forward! As I've commented in the C25K team messages, the mental part is the toughest! This is what I need to work on, along with more mileage.

While my performance is very satisfying, I was still disappointed in not finishing under 30 minutes. Based on my training I felt this was achievable. Perhaps if I had toughed it out instead of walking, I might have. But still, I'm hooked on running. I also know that I need to test myself occasionally by running races. Don't know how many races I'll be able to fit in over the summer (not many during the blazing heat in Florida), but I know that fall will bring many opportunities nearer to home.

Plan to run the 5K in the hometown Palm Beach Marathon in December. Would love to hear from others planning to run either the 5K, half-marathon or marathon in West Palm Beach. Would also love to meet up with future friends planning for this run! Weather should be comfortable then.

Good luck to all others racing this 4th of July weekend!

-Doug

@TXGLENNA:

Running in the rain is fine if you can tolerate it, but if there's a storm with thunder and lightning- you might want to head for shelter!

I like this idea too.

When it is stormy outside it is time to head indoors. Treadmill. It works when it is really hot outside too.

Great idea!
I have something to ask What do you do when it is storming outside and you can't run?

My success is measured in miles. Not calories, not pounds, not ounces, not inches, not numbers. It's measured by that feeling in my lungs as I push past what I thought was possible.
