I quit smoking on Chantix though I have tried to do cold turkey on two occasions, but of no use. I have smoked for around 5 yrs with pack a day. Thanks to chantix and the support my family provided me. It really helped me to get over my nicotine addiction and I don’t feel craving anymore. There is one thing which I would like to share and which helped me a lot initially, try having a glass of water when you feel craving the most. It a tough road but it's worth so best luck to all those who want to give up smoking.

Hello everyone. I'm new to this team. I love Chantix. It has changed my life. I never thought I would be an ex-smoker. Smoking was my life for 40 years. 2 packs a day. Chantix has been a miracle drug for me. I have no desire to smoke. No panic attacks. No side effects other than some odd sleeping patterns. Nothing I can't live without. I am so happy to be finally free of the nicodemon!

I look forward to the day when I get off the Chantix but I have no doubts about my being able to quit smoking. I have no problems being around smokers. I love the smell of me and my house. No stale cigarette smoke.

Good luck to all of you who are using Chantix and those of you who have stopped smoking and are off the Chantix.

Hi I am new to the board and want to congratulate all that have quit and are trying to quit. I have been on the chantix for six weeks now and have not even had a puff in 5 weeks.
I still have cravings. I find things to do and the stomach pain has been there too. I find if I eat yogurt It is better. The dreams I have not had but I don't sleep well.
My insurance covers and I have a prescripton for 6 months.
Good luck and keep going

UPDATE;;;;;;;;;;;;
First I love dreams........

It has been 1 month going on 2 and I still smoke one to two biddies a night. I still crave smoking at times. Now I think part of this is because I had them around the house. But then I hear about how people are around other people who smoke cigs and it don't bother them.

On a good note I am down to last few and I promise myself that I would not buy any more. My breathing and over health has improved. I am working out 4 to 5 days a weeks and I can tell the difference.

Way to go Pixxystixx, I like that you brought a few friends with you. I wish I had waited a few more days on the Chantix to stop. It would have made it a bit more easy I think. Live & Learn
I will tell my friends when I convince them to quit to wait the extra few days and just drift slowly off into the non smoking, free breathing world.

Way to go Maryfsj, It is not easy but if it's not worth fighting for it is not worth having. I start day 4 today. I still have not had any of the discussed side effects from the Chantix. Sleep is disrupted but that is it. The first few days I had to take it with some food but now I take it with my coffee when I get up at 4 and usually don't eat until I get home from the gym at 8. Sometimes I get just a tiny bit queasy but that helps me not go and eat so I call it a bonus.
I can't imagine all of the side effects that were just listed. I don't think it messes with my mind at all. Yesterday I enjoyed laying around in my bed all day and doing nothing but I don't think it was depression or any thing bad, just the day to lay n do nuthin" Shortesti must have really been allergic to something in Chantix. I know it is not for everyone. So good luck to your cold turkey quit. If you want it bad enough you'll get it.
Have a great day and breathe deep.
Diane

Today was my QUIT DAY and it well really well. No cravings but there were a couple times throughout the day when I thought I should be smoking. So I just got up & did something else. I haven't had any of the side effects so I guess that I'm lucky...but I do eat before taking the pills so I think that might make a difference. Congrats to everyone who has quit and GOOD LUCK to those who are trying to quit!

my dreams were really weard
i dog hurt at work because i was so mellowed outdidn't realize i was working

and what took me off it was when i almost killed my self going through a snow bank almost hitting 2 mail boxes and a huge tree almost totaled my car over $5,ooo worth of damage thank god for insurance

Thanks Diane and Cheri! You both will have great quits also!

I started taking Chantix because my sister asked me to try it. To be honest, I didn’t want to quit and I definitely thought that this would not work for me. (the addict inside of me talking) She bought my first month supply, so I decided to give it a go. I am so glad that I did! I used Chantix for almost 2 weeks before I quit. I didn’t notice it working and then all of a sudden it was like, I don’t want to smoke anymore and that was it. I was on Chantix for almost 2 months total. I gave myself the last 2 weeks to wean. I cut the pills in half again, since I was already taking .5 mg, and it worked for me.

I wish you guys all the best!! You can definitely beat this addiction!

Zen what you are doing or thinking is what I thought also. The twelve week thing rather loomed over me and I was so scared that when I stopped Chantix the nicodemon would catch me.

As it turned out, I did buy the third pack but by that time I was at the point where I was having no cravings and I forgot the pill often. When that started happening I would go several days without chantix, I knew I had some control over the nicodemon.

I still have two packages from the third month in my cabinet and it won't touched. But I do totally understand where you are coming from.

Oh, I am now celebrating 8 months of freedom.

I too have to pay for the Chantix. No insurance here! But I figure it will be cheaper in the long run than dealing with lung and heart issues. I have the dreams too. They ar not bad ones but like you said, they really seem real. It's kinda fun. I don't sleep very well though, must be the dreaming waking me up. I really have to think in the morning if it was real or just a dream. Most of them are so far fetched it doesn't take much to know they were a dream. The not sleeping well doesn't bother too much because it gives me an excuse to go lay down and nap in the afternoon and that keeps me from wanting to go outside and smoke. I wish I didn't still have the cravings. I can deal with them so far but dang... I just can't get the toughts out of my head. Day two is better than half over so I think I will be able to chaulk it up to a great day.

I was on Chantix for 2 months at full price.
I had to eat big when I took it or my stomach hurt. My dreams were very vivid and realistic but enjoyable. I smoked for the first 10 days thinking this isn't working, then on the 11th day I woke up with no need or want to smoke at all. The stomach thing was the worst part, I couldn't wait to get off of Chantix, but glad I didn't smoke anymore.
Don't want to go through that anymore plus the financial investment into my health is what keeps me from lighting up. Uncontrollable hunger and sometimes the smallest things make me cry for no reason are the only things I noticed have changed in my life since taking Chantix. I smoked for 30 years, I am smoke free for 10 months now, running and playing with my grandchildren without depending on an oxygen tank is my motivation to never smoke again.
My advice is: if you WANT TO QUIT, try it, full strength, high price, gut pain, vivid dreams everything, you will get through it and happy you did.

BRINGINGIT--Thank you for your telling me about your experience. WTG on your quit!! I forgot to take the Chantix yesterday but will be taking it this morning after a good breakfast. I've been cutting the pill in half and just taking the .5 and that's what I'm going to continue doing. I sure hope it works!

Good for you Bringingit. That sounds like a great quit to me. How long did you stay on the Chantix?
and how long did you give your self to wean off it.

I am now on day 2 of quit. Had a few challenges yesterday and this morning was already rough. You just get that feeling of if I just had two drags I would be fine...trying with all I've got not to but that little bugger in the back of my head is pretty persistent.
Have a great day and again Congrats on your quit

Hi all,
Last night I forgot to take my second dose of Chantix. Didn't even think about it till about 10 and thought it was too late by then. I haven't had any cravings to speak of, so I might consider cutting back to 1 a day or cutting them in half as suggested here. Has anyone continued beyond the recommended 12 week period? I know the insurance won't pay beyond that, so if I could stock pile some (just in case) by cutting the dose, I might try that. Is that lame brained?

Hey Cheri13! I quit with Chantix 110 days ago! I only used .5mg the whole time because when I went up to the 1mg I had horrible side affects. So, I just cut the pills in half. I still had to take it after eating, but it worked. I definitely want to recommend to everyone to wean yourself off of the Chantix to avoid having a major Seratonin (sp?) drop.

Good luck to everyone and congratulations on your quits!! emoticon

Well today is my quit day. So far so good. I also have that problem with the first morning smoke. I usually wake up around 4am and get my computer time in before the family gets up at 6. Generally 4 cigs by the time I wake up the kids. I'm on Chantix and I have just naturally cut way down during the last week without even trying. That was great. I have had a few cravings this morning but not too bad yet. I went to the gym and got a good workout. I told them to expect me later on in the day if things get bad.
I have found that whole Flax seeds are keeping my hands busy this morning. You have to eat just a few at a time and chew them slowly with your front teeth so keeps the mouth busy too as well as the Omega 3's and the good fat you get from them.
I'll keep you posted on my progress.
Whewww here's to a smoke free day.

Just checking in. Day 9 - no cigs. The Chantix is really working well this time. I rarely have a crave, and when I do I think about the hassle it would be to ask hubby for a cig, go to the cold basement and light up. I haven't had much nausea after the first week. I just make sure I take it right when I've eaten something. Now, I might feel a bit funny stomach-wise for a little bit after takng it, but nothing that can't be handled.

The diet is going pretty well also. My main concern is just trying to stay consistent with getting on this site and doing what the guidelines suggest. I'm not going to overwhelm myself too soon. I need to up the exercise, but that will come. I actually got in a Tai Chi and a yoga session this week. Will do another yoga tomorrow. My attitude is to get my head straight first and then the body will follow.

Everyone have a great smoke-free weekend, and keep up the good work with these two major changes in our lives.

I have several friends that cut them in half and quit. I had no problems with the regular dosage but if you get nauseous, etc, use the lower dosage.

Good luck.

I started taking Chantix today. This will be my 3rd time trying. I stopped those other times because I felt so sick after taking it. I took it with food too!

I didn't have anymore of the .5mg so I cut a 1mg in half and took that. Anyone just stick with the .5mg a day and find that it worked?

Thanks!

Mzfire, my morning cigarettes were my biggest fear that I would have problems with. I loved that first cigarette but with it as well as with my others, I learned I had to change my habits.

Chantix was my miracle drug but I also think that my attitude this time was just as important. Good luck to everyone however they can quit.

Zen, I doing bad. I have cut way back but I am still smoking. I have to put my mind to this. My smoking was my comfort my company. I have been having a slight headache but nothing else.

I am so happy you have been smoke free for three days...I'm going to have to quit playing and just do this.

I tell you what alot of things are getting done now...lol washing the dishes more often, cleaning more just feeling a little better in general. The problem is the old habits of being on the computer and smoking, after work, in the mornings is my killa.....even with going to workout in the morning. I still want to sit and drink a cup of coffee and smoke.

I am not giving up....like I said this is a package deal to be successful!!!

Thank you for the support it means so much to me!!!

Just checking in. Hi Mzfire. That last cig that made me sick was the last I've had for three days. The Chantix is starting to work. Feeling a lot calmer through the day. I've had some urges, but have been able to talk myself through them. I think you can do it with one prescription, Mzfire. They seem to start working pretty fast after you get to the 2 a day, 1mg. Keep me posted on how you're feeling. The diet is going pretty well also. I'm using the tracker religiously, and am really watching my portions. I'm quite surprised how much a cup actually is. It is indeed enough to fill you up.

Everyone have a great weekend.

Zen I am struggling to. I have cut way back but I am still smoking.

I talked to my mother and she sd that BF's mother who was chain smoker for over 40 years took Chantix and she quit.

I think you and I are expecting too much too soon, Please keep taking the medicine as will I and lets see what happens. The bad part for me is my insurance don't cover Chantix and I was and still hoping that I will be able to quit with one prescription. Besides you did it before it will work out again.

I had one cig today. That was this morning. It was the last in the pack. I think I needed to say good bye to it. The Chantix made me vomit after it, so that was extra good. Last cig and it made me sick. Do want to remember that. Hope everyone is doing well. Just wanted to check in.

I am on Chantix...actually finishing up my last week of the pills. I have been on them a little longer than most people because I had to cut the dosage in half. I just couldn't tolerate the two pills per day. Doing that I couldn't sleep, when I did I had nightmares, upset stomache etc I cut the dosage in half and was fine.I haven't had a cigarette since October 16th 2007 but still have cravings from time to time

I'm on day 5 with Chantix. Monday is my quit date. I tried last year in January with Chantix and it did work, but after I stopped taking it I got lazy and tried a cig. Went back to smoking. It's taken me a year to get serious about another quit. Hopefully, this will be my last. I'm trying to stay close to sites like this and quitnet for support. That's where I always fall down. I visit at first then make excuses for not logging on. Trying a different approach this time. Put SparkPeople as my home page, so everytime I get on the computer I see it. Still smoking in the A.M. Didn't have my usual cig last night before bed. That's a big one. It seems those A.M. cigs and coffee are the worst for me. I need at least 3 and 3 cups of coffee to get going. So needless to say, I'll be avoiding coffee too. It just doesn't seem possible to drink it without a cig for me. That goes for alcohol too. I just don't see how people do it. Good luck to everyone.

To TLC.........one day at a time!!!!!

Not sure about the tea thing. Me and a co-worker were talking yesterday. He is a smoker and I am encouraging him to quit smoking with Chantix. We both agreed that it would be very hard because cigs and coffee go well together. He loves coffee but he want to quit smoking. I sent him the comments from this post for more encouragement. I haven't even tried Chantix but on the testimonies of everyone and the other research I have done I am ready and would like to see everyone else quit as well.

TLC I hope you got some sleep last night emoticon

OK WHAT ABOUT INSOMNIA??? THIS IS THE 3RD MORNING IN A ROW I HAVE BEEN UP BY 4 AM!!

Oh BTW yesterday I DID IT!! My first full day of no nicotine! The only side effects I am experiencing is the nausea and insomnia. But I think I took the pill firts and then ate yesterday. Today I will eat and then take the pill. It's very hard to remember to do that because until SP I never ate breakfast. I was a coffee & cigarette breakfast person. I have not had a cup of coffee in 3 days, I switched to tea. Someone said that was better for me than coffee. IDK though .... they both have caffine so Idont see how. Anyone out there know?

I absolutely love it!!! I am on day 34 smoke free!! I am even out drinkng and not wanting a cig. I smoked almost a pack a day before I quit for about 14 years. I had tried to quit in the past with the patch and cold turkey. I would succeed for a little while but the battle was always there. It was especially there whenever alcohol entered the picture. This time around though I am not battling. The best thing was the week you are suppose to become smoke free I was still smoking. I bought a pack on a Monday and was still smoking that same pack on Sat. That smoke I had on Sat though made me so nasaues and gave me a terrible headache. I haven't smoked since. The few times I have thought about it, I think about how crappy I felt. For me, getting sick was probably the best thing for me. I think it is wonderful. It is worth the money for the awesome little pill. My friends call it my "happy" pill. This is because I don't have the mood changes--nicotine fit or nic withdrawls. I am pretty even keal.
As for the dreams....I have had a couple that I actually a remember parts (Before I didn't) so this is actually kinda cool.
As for depression...I heard that when we were smoking we took out or ignored certain behaviors by smoking. When we stop smoking we have to find a way to face our feelings or find another--hopefully healthy way--to deal with our emotions.
The other piece of advice I received was that when you start the week two--so the first smoke free week--women may need to break the pills in half. The does might be too high. I guess women who break it in half don't get that nasaues just for taking it. Also, it is really important to take this pill with food in your stomach. I know I felt like I was going to throw up when I took it one morning right before I ate.
I really do wish you the best of luck. I think Chantix is absolutely fabulous. I would recommend it to EVERYONE!!

I also used Chantix and it was my miracle drug.

Side effects. If I tried to take the meds without a full stomach, I got quite nauseous, so I got very good at eating a proper breakfast everyday which was great for learning my new lifestyle. I also had to drink lots of water. Another okay thing.

I did have the dreams and loved them and missed them when they went away, lol.

I had to pay 40 dollars for my perscription but I spent way more than that on sickerettes.

But I have to agree with Zan and Susan and I have said this many times when I have talked about my quit.

YOU have to want this quit. YOU are the person responsible. There is NO magic pill or aid that takes away the crave away. It is learning a new lifestyle.

When I decided to quit this summer, I finally came to the realization that I was the only person that was going to make MY quit happen. I had said many times that I was fed up with being ruled by that little white stick. Well, if I was fed up with it, then by golly I needed to do something about it.

I held myself accountable for my actions. I told EVERYONE that I was quitting. I did not try to use the ploy that I wasn't going to tell people cause I might not succeed. By not telling people, it was much easier to slip back to smoking. No one really knew I had quit, soooo I can smoke. Nope didn't try that this time.

Also, many of the side effects are not side affects of Chantix or other smoking aids but the withdrawal from the nicodemon. That demon is deep within and creates a lot of misery when we try to kick him out of our systems. Nicodemon uses many tactics, you have to be ready to intercede at all times.

Now I have never had problems with depression but one of the women at our office suffers from very severe depression. She can stay in bed weeks at a time from her depression but currently her meds are very well regulated and she is doing well and her doctor told her that the chantix would not interfere with her meds and to use it so she is. It has not increased her depression but has helped her to stop smoking.

I smoked for four days after I started the pill and by the fifth day, I had no desire for sickettes and now more than seven months later I am quite happy over my success. I am quite proud of myself and my two sons are both estatic over my quit.

The 120 dollars I spent was one of the best investments I have ever made and would pay more than that for the success it has brought me and many others.

Good luck to all those trying to stop and know that many of us are out willing to help you stick to the resolve.

Save the planet, think green, do green

I am on day 8 of Chantix! My first smoke free day! I have to say my kids were SOOOO excited! It really is worth it. I only had to pay $40 with my insurance so I am pretty lucky, but I would have paid any amount. My friend used Chantix to quit and she will be smoke free for one year at the end of this month!!

My husband said something about the dreams (he is quitting with me). I always have weird dreams, so thats nothing new to me. I am REALLY thirsty on it though - but thats a good thing - it helps me reach my 8 glasses of water a day goal!

I feel a bit nauseous today though. I am trying to eat my meals because I know I will binge if I get too hungry but I am not feeling too good.

I am sure it will pass and I only had a short episode of thinking I wanted a cigarette. It passed while I vacumed instead! It really has been working for me. I know I am only on day 1 of smoke free (first 7 days you can smoke... but I really didnt want to after my 2nd day on it)

Thanks for the responses thus far.

I found a website drugs.com people are talking about there experience with Chantix. The thing that concerns me right now is the depression.
I have suffered from depression before and I don't want to ever to there again. Now I hear that the FDA is investigating Chantix and suicide. This really frightens me.

But I hear more good than bad. Yes I am ready to quit. When I stopped before I used the patch I only used the first step and I was done.

I never did get those dreams they say you may get. I guess I missed out on that.

I do want to add. Like Zantonk said you have to want this. I have a friend who spent the money to get Chantix and she never quit. So to her that was a waste. But if you really want to quit you will with Chantix. Don't let this go by. It does work.

My 2 cents:

I credit Chantix for my quit. 6 months free now and will never go back. Chantix was the difference between wanting to quit and doing it!!

I had no side effects durningthe day, at night I enjoyed the craziest dreams, vivid and wild and I actually miss them now.

I paid full price and feel it was worth double that, now that I quit, but was hesitant to spend that kind of $ not knowing if it would work ( I have tried patches, cold turkey, gum in the past.. some multiple times and without success) Chantix really blocks the brain from recieving the drug it loves so smoking no longer works... no "buzz" or hightened concentration that we crave, doesn't happen after a while so smoking becomes... yuk. I agree with Susan, it becomes a mental quit, relearning to do things without lightin up, replacing the habit with healthier choices... you do not have to gain Lbs, but will if you relace your smoking habit with eating. I used breathing fresh air, big inhales like I was smoking only fresh air!

I used Chantix for 1 month and decided that I was DONE! Continued use of Chantix is incase you slip, (which a huge percentage of people do when quiting), IF in a weak moment you decide to try just one, it won't be pleasant and you won't jump back to a pack a day...I have been there and done that, so I decided Not One Puff Every, NO Matter What! If you feel vulnerable after a month or two months quit, I believe the $ is worth continuing the meds and making it as easy on yourself as possible.

On that note, you must really want to quit for you, it isn't easy, but it is so worth the effort and the $ you put towards a life of freedom. I smoked for 30 years and for at least 20 of those years I wished I could quit! Each year I would ask myself what one thing do I want the most and the answer was always "quiting smoking is the single best thing I can do for myself" and yet, I fell short over and over until I began to believe I may never be able to quit.... Chantix made it possible, I made it happen!

You can too!! Zan Oh yes, and I ave saved $850.00 in six months, so that is a profit of $739.00 after paying for my Chantix!!! emoticon

First off my insurance did help pay. I only paid $60.00 a month.
I had no side affects from it.
I took it for only 2 months. Didn't go get my third.
I have not had a cig since Sept. 1st. That was my quit day.

Smoke the first week you are taking it. You will start seeing that your cigs don't taste like they did. It blocks your part of the brain where the nicotine goes.

It will be a mental game for you. Because you won't have any withdrawals phyisical that is. It will be mental.

I never wanted to eat like some have to. So I didn't gain any weight either.

I tell everyone this is the way to go because it was the only thing that got me to quit. I tried the patches, cold turkey.

I think it was well worth the money. Sory your insurance won't help you.

Hi
My doctor wrote me a perscription for Chantix and I have a few questions for people who has used it or still using it.

1. My insurance doesn't pay, the starter pack is like $118.00 is it worth it. What was your total cost for the 3months?

2. Do you have any side effect from using Chantix? If so what?

3. I don't want to take the medicine for three months. Did you quit taking the medicine before three months?

4. After you finished taking Chantix did you want to smoke?

Thanks in advance
