It was a perfect afternoon when we arrived. Beautiful skies and very comfortable temperatures. We did a little walking around the rim to get acclimated to the altitude.

I am in both images and the I am with my Dad & Uncle for this hike. These two gentlemen are in their mid 60's.

Later that night while in the hotel doing final preparations on our packs, we were hit with a hail storm.

Day 1

As we started down, there was a light mist in the air and around 40 degrees out.

This photo was taken just a short distance from the top of the rim.

Once we arrived at our first stop (1.5 mile house), it was looking a bit worse and the actual rain had started coming down. By this point, we had exchanged our light wait hoodies for actual rain jackets.

Here is a shot from our next meet location (3 mile house).

When we reached Indian Gardens (4.5 miles) it was really coming down hard.

Once we left Indian Gardens, things lightened up a bit.

Then we reach the major switch backs below Indian Gardens, and an image of what the North Rim looks like from here.

Once at the bottom of the switch backs, it is time to get to the river.

Here I am at the river and once across the bridge you can see behind me, I'll be at Bright Angel Camp Grounds where we plan to stay for the next two nights.

Once we arrived there, we got our tents setup and it pretty much rained until nearly 9 pm that night. Yes, everything was wet.

This is day 1 MapMyWalk data. The time does not include rest breaks. There were about 90 minutes worth of breaks.

Things are getting to big with the pics. This concludes Day 1 of the hike. Please follow as I will post Day 2 of the hike tomorrow. It was a 3 day hike.
