Anybody else watching the basketball games of March Madness? emoticon

We have two mid-western schools in the final four, with Loyola of Chicago and Michigan, so far.

Today's games will have East versus West in Villanova versus Texas Tech (should be interesting), and East versus mid-west with Kansas versus Duke. Wouldn't it be a trip if THIS year there were no big Eastern schools in the final four?

Enough of that, it's Palm Sunday, leading up to Easter next weekend... hope you all have a blessed one. And thoughts and prayers going out to all our military families, especially those dealing with deployments... may your loved ones be safe, and hopefully be able to touch base with you! And another special prayer for those dealing with post-deployment adjustments, physical, mental, or emotional.

And still thinking, too, of the people of Puerto Rico. We sometimes forget that these are indeed US Citizens, and many of them serve. Wilma, wherever you are, thoughts and prayers for your island and you and your family.

Did my best, Connie, enjoying them. Turns out my great-niece and -nephew down in Utah have caught the cross country skiing bug from them. Fortunately for them, their parents are very supportive of athletic efforts... mom runs a Lole fitness wear and her own line that she runs online, teaches yoga and played tennis competitively even while pregnant!

Their dad is no slouch in fitness, either. Who knows... I wouldn't put anything up against talent and support.

A funny thing happened at the beginning of yesterday's race... I'd just crossed the starting line and my phone rang... SON! This is the second time this has happened with this particular race... he seems to think it's in the morning. Now, who would schedule an early March race in Nebraska in the morning? Seriously! Anyway, once I told him I was on course he disconnected quickly, with a "crush it, Mom!"

Hope the whole team is having a Blessed and Peaceful Sunday!

Time for something lighter? Pertinent to Military sport... watching Biathlon mass start (XC skiing and target shooting)... for some reason this sport has always been an exciting one to watch. I imagine it's because of the combination of skills (surprise, this is the triathlete talking... combination of skills?) But in biathlon it's even more challenging in that the skills are so different from one another.

I mean, swimming, biking, and running are all aerobic pursuits. Biathlon the athletes are going hard, and then have to be calm and still to shoot accurately. Makes sense that military forces in Scandanavia are the ones that came up with this sport... it was a combination of skills that in earlier times were vital to defending their nations.

And WOW! It was a photo finish!

Anybody else have a favorite Winter Olympic sport they are following? I know we all love the figure skaters. Anybody with an offbeat fave?

Hope you're all enjoying a blessed Sunday.

I don't remember the rules about GI Bill being used for spouse or child... I know they can't use it for themselves if they use it for someone else, but I don't remember if they have to remain in the reserves or not. Or for that matter what the "years of service" required were to do that transfer. Jon needed it for himself, and his wife wasn't much interested, as it turned out.

That flu is all over in our area and I’ve dodged it so far! Some even got it twice so take it slow, Sunny!
Still trying to “communicate” some with Joel on his plans. It’s looking like he is leaving the military as he is taking classes on resumes. When I ask him questions about leaving he clams up... I did mention the VA job site so we shall see if he is listening...I’m just wondering if he is leaving does he still gets that GI Bill for college for his wife? Needless to say I’m a nervous nelly about his future. I keep telling myself to put this in God’s Hands.
See you all on the challenge :)

Thanks for the update on Joel. Hopefully, they will be able to find a place for him so he can stay in the service if that is what he wants. Bless his heart. Sounds like his wife is done so that would be difficult. Do keep us posted. I think if he want to the VA's website, he could probably find a list of jobs available.

I finally got back to the bike today but only biked 4 miles. Tomorrow I will bike then Wednesday, we will be out of town all day. Headed to Springfield for a check up and to see Joshua.

It feels good to finally feel good after having that flu for over a week. Ugh...

Take care team. Sunny

Jon was a behavioral health specialist as his MOS, has field experience treating soldiers, so VA was a good fit, but he's in an administrative role there, not a clinical one. He's still working on his Master's that would qualify him for clinical psychology work, but is running out of GI Bill.

That's another option, even "out", GI Bill might be available. It covers housing while a vet is going to school at least half time. Jon took full advantage of that, and it has really helped them hold it together, financially.

Not sure what all kinds of jobs the VA hires for, but even those administrative positions vets have an advantage in the hiring pool. It's worth keeping an eye out for, in any case. Not a fit for everyone, but nice pay and benefits if it does end up being a fit.

Prayers for all.

Thank you, Barb! I love this team! Most of my friends and family don’t understand....and I knew you here could probably relate. When and if the time comes I will mention the VA to Joel. There is a hospital about a hour from here so could be a possibility. What sort of position does your son work? My son has some training in electrical construction and moved in the field of gas turbines. Not too sure there is a need for that at the VA. I’ll keep the Faith and pray this works out. Joel has always been a great provider for his family and I’m afraid what will happen if he has a challenge there. We shall see! My daughter in law has been very Blessed with all her wants :-)

Oh, Connie, I think we all know the military is tough on families and marriages. My son's wife started losing her enthusiasm early on... pretty much in the wake of Fort Hood shooting. She saw changes in Jon, and he's out-out now, of course. But still, his time in service changed both him and her. He now works for the VA, and should your Joel decide to leave the military, make sure he's aware of the possibility of VA jobs. There are possibilities of "buying in" credit for retirement based on the military years. Not a perfect system, but a leg up if such jobs are available where you live.

Like you, I just keep praying about it.

Hugs & best wishes for him and his family, including you!

Hi girls, been a while since I put a update on Joel. He had a hip replacement 2 yrs ago and now his other hip needs replacement...at this point he’s off the ship and after 12 yrs serving no one is sure of his future with the military. He’s on light duty until he goes before a board to determine his future there. In a way I’m heartbroken because only 7-8 yrs from now he would of had full retirement along with great income but presently it’s not looking as if that’s in the cards. I have to say his wife has had enough of the military life and she’s already looking for rentals near her parents and Is really pushing joel to quit. I don’t think he will get disability because he’s not willing to have surgery at this time. So, 12 yrs served and nothing to show for it. This all doesn’t make sense to me but I’m not one to get in the midst of their decisions. I just hope and pray that they realize it will be challenging for them to start over at this point. On the other hand it will be great having them back in Michigan but it might be a struggle getting reestablished which might be hard on their marriage...His wife, who was initially was very supportive, is now frustrated with the military, understandably! It’s not knowing that is worrying me. Praying they get through all this and that their marriage is strong enough to get through.
I guess what will be will be!

It's been scary for sure. Doc seemed to think because I had the flu shot, it helped it from being so severe. Heck, it was severe enough for me.

Good news, I am just 3 #'s from my initial goal to loose 25#'s. I have been working on this goal for so long that it is hard to believe that I am almost there. color me happy!

Sheesh! I missed posting here last Sunday... I usually at least check in to chit-chat once a week!

Glad your test went well, Sunny! No point in changing meds if things are going well... unless the "new" med can really do more, of course. But once we have things in balance? Why change?

The 5K's back to back were fun, with friends, and the best Winter running weekend we'd had, weather-wise, so glad they postponed it.

Training goes on. It has sort of replaced my job in terms of something to focus on and get up to do each day. Some days I wonder what I've got myself in for, but other days I'm on top of the world.

Heard from my son Jon this week, as he works through the current transition in his life. Funny but a lot of the people I train with are about his age... must be a good age to start / reach for athletic goals. But they are a lot of fun to be around. The interesting conversations on a run surround their desires for their own moms... whether it's a wish for their moms to downsize because dad can't hear so well and mom, while in great shape for her age, took a fall (from a pullup bar) and dad couldn't get to her... or a wish their mom would get off the couch.

I think all our kids, service members and non-service members alike, want their parents to take care of themselves.

So, I'm hoping we're all doing just that! Have a Blessed Sunday, all... and do check in and let us know how things are in your lives!

Awesome that the 5K went so well. Do keep us posted about today's events. We are rooting for you. How great was it that your sister joined you and how nice of you to make sure the runner without a light was OK. You are my SHERO for this day.

My Pulmonary Function was the best it has been in 3 years - increased points in every area so when doc suggested a new medication, I kindly turned it down. If it works, why change it? He just smiled.

Do have a great day, Team!!

Hope your busy week went well, Sunny! Mine went as well as can be expected for an introvert. The beauty of being retired is that I *can* work in spaces of solitude amid the appointments.

Going back to work for me would not help the busy-ness that is engendered by just being "of a certain age". We see doctors and dentists more often, and if we're working, we still have to!

Last night's 5K was wonderful... I was not the only 65+ runner, either.

And things being the way they are in families, it was me running back along the route to find my kid sister and make sure she was OK (11 years my junior)... she was, of course, she jogged and walked... but her concern was for another runner who did not have a light... would I go find her? Of course. So in the end I went more than a 5K.

This morning... back out to do it again!

Hope all have a blessed Sunday, and a good week ahead!

It's going to be a busy week for me too. I have a Pulmonary Function on Wednesday morning and lunch with a dear friend. Thursday, I see the Cardiologist and have the Loop Recorder Checked. I did have a little incident after Church yesterday so sure if it was anything related to my problem, it will show up on the Loop Recorder. Awe, getting older is not for sissies - for sure!

I have said many times Barb that I should go back to work, retirement is just way too busy.

Praying we do hear from Wilma. The news out of Puerto Rico yesterday where the people in charge of the power grid was charging people to hook their power back up. Wow!

Take care and if you have not started the Winter Challenge, come join us. We are going for miles this year. Anything that you do can be converted to miles and we would love to have you.

Hugs to you all, Sunny

Another week flies by! Happy and Blessed Sunday, everyone!

Who knew retirement would be such a busy time? (I can hear everyone who retired before me laughing!)

Nature is not the only force that abhors a vacuum... apparently schedules do, too. I made sure to put health and fitness at the top of the priority list for MY retirement... as those of you who have been reading along the soap of my life as written in blogs know. This upcoming week I have both the eyes and the teeth to be looked over.

A retirement party for someone else and two lunch appointments fill in a social aspect.

And the rest of the week is filling in with training and the re-scheduled "Last Run/First Run" pair of 5K runs that were supposed to have been New Year's Eve and New Year's Day but got shifted due to double digit negative temperatures.

So, yeah, keeping busy here... how about you all? What's shaking in your corners of the world?

And as always, prayers for our service members, world wide, who are out there serving in the cause of keeping those corners safe!

Prayers for those affected by extreme weather and geologic events, too. Thinking of Wilma and her family in Puerto Rico, and hope we do hear from her. One hard thing about on line connections is that when one or another of us loses the online presence, we don't have a back up to check on one another!

We are up and getting read for church. A little warmer day in our neck of the woods but also a chance of snow and rain.

We are having a carry in today for our Interim Minister as today is his last day with us. Our new minister will be arriving from Pennsylvania this week. It is an exciting time for our church.

I will bike and do the weights this afternoon.

Praying also for those who are struggling today especially our soldiers.

See you later on the Winter Challenge Thread.

Connie - looking for you to join us. Sunny

A blessed Sunday to all!

As I lit my candles this morning, I thought of those struggling with illness, and lifted a prayer. I thought of those who may be missing a loved one, and lifted a prayer. I thought of those still battling the effects of extreme weather, and lifted a prayer. And as always, I thought of our service member who are far from home, many in harm's way, and lifted more prayer.

May peace and love pervade your hearts, and compassion for those less fortunate, for even in the midst of our own struggles, there are those who carry heavier burdens.

Goodbye December and Hello January.

Good to hear Barb that you got an extra hour today. I woke up at 6 but decided to stay home and stay in today. -5 degrees is just not conducive to getting out.

I am biking later and working on my Goals for 2018. I have lost 25#'s since my surgery in August and planning on loosing some more. My focus this year will be not only weight loss but strength training, which is something I really need.

Take care and Happy New Year to everyone. emoticon

Happy New Year's Eve Sunday, everyone!

It's like a super-New Year for me... Sunny asked about sleeping in yesterday, on my first day of retirement... made it only to 4:24 a.m. yesterday. This morning I was an hour better. Slept 'til 5:23!

This first week might be quite the experiment in transition.

Prayers for all... for health, happiness, and "enough" in 2018!

I think about Wilma and her family often and pray they are all OK. Hope we hear from her soon.

I remember when you shipped that coffee to your son. Great memories.

We had a lovely Christmas. It is just so nice to have Joshua with us - sober and doing so good. We are so proud of him. He has been on quiet the journey but is doing very well.
Our other son, Brian and his wife were with us also so had a lovely day here in NE Missouri. We talked with our other Son who had been on a cruise with his family and arrived back in NOLA on Christmas Eve. God is good!!

Today, headed to Springfield, Illinois. You all take care and enjoy Boxing Day. (only NO Boxing!!)

Sunny

Still holding Wilma and her family close in my heart and prayers, not having heard anything from her. Wishing everyone here the best of Christmas Blessings, and celebrating myself with Holiday Cheer flavored quarter caff coffee, remembering the Christmas I looked all over town for my son's favorite flavor to grind and ship with cookies to Afghanistan.

His package arrived on Christmas Day, that year, and we each sipped a mug of that flavored brew while exchanging instant messages... of course he shared with all his buddies where he was stationed. Oatmeal Scotchies and Yuletide Fireside coffee.

We had a lovely Advent message this morning at Church. It is indeed a blessed time of the year. 4 more weeks of work - Wow! So happy for you.

Everything is well here. We are headed to Springfield tomorrow for a FU appointment with the surgeon.

Looks like the chit-chat moved into the Challenge forum with the New York To Los Angeles thread.

Meantime, 'tis the season. We have prepared our hearts with Thanksgiving, and now it's the advent season of the weeks leading up to Christmas. Time is flying by for me, as that is coinciding with the last four weeks of work to retirement.

Hope things are well with all, and prayers for blessings on all of you and your families!

Hey, team! Sunday check-in, and wishing all a blessed Sunday of this Veterans' Day weekend.

Yesterday I found the VFW was handing out poppies in honor of the day (donation made, of course). Also chose a matching time to give my annual bit to the USO. So many Vets, so many causes. I know those of us with service members in the family are highly aware... I hope the rest of the general populace is doing their bit, too.

Tomorrow my Jon heads off for an 8 week training stint for his job at the VA in the St. Louis area, so I'm virtually sending waves for Sunny. He'll be in your neck of the woods. Because he'll be gone for this extended period, I've made plans to get together with the daughter in law, so she survives the Thanksgiving holiday (he won't be coming home, they don't get the Friday after off).

I offered to bake him a pumpkin pie before he goes (he raves about my pumpkin pie) but he says it can wait until his return. Less pressure for this weekend, anyway, and probably safer for ME.

How's life in your world?

so glad that he did get some help, thanks to Jon. Rich's cousin had Agent Orange exposure and he gets a health pension as a result of being exposed.

It is a great facility and we are still thanking God for directing Joshua there.

Have a good evening.

Looks like a really nice facility. It seems that being around other veterans really helps those who have had trouble "coming home". Jon identified several issues with his Dad that he is of the opinion it would help if he just linked up with other vets and had someone to talk with!

His dad is Viet Nam purple heart recipient, and probably suffers from Agent Orange exposure, based on where he served, what he did, and when. If it wasn't for our son pushing him to get help, he might never have done so.

Retirement just around the corner, how exciting and a little scary too. It is a huge adjustment. I sure missed all my co-workers but do stay in touch and see them at "socials" occasionally. I wish you the best, Barb.

So glad Jon is doing well. Here is a video of the facility where Joshua is right now. It was built and is run by the VA. vimeo.com/137978244 Thanks be to God they were there!!!

Well, cooler weather has come to NE Missouri. I had to put my hoodie up last night when I was leaving the Church. I am so not ready for this....ugh!

Sharon, You have lots going on with the arrival of that new baby. How is baby and Momma doing?

Take care and do have a Terrific Thursday.

Yes, Sunny, Jon is working for the VA. And he's still in school, too, so busy guy.

I went and ran the Bryan Health Classic 5K yesterday afternoon, partly to knock some senses into myself. I felt I was going oh-so-slowly... and I took walk breaks, for sure. I left early when the sneezies set in, so didn't stay for the results. They e-mailed me later with them (that's what they do, these days)... turns out my slow slog was still the 2nd of 15 ladies in the 60 - 69 age group. So I'll have to go pick up my award at the downtown running store at some point. I kind of shook my head over that... but I must not be the only "senior" runner who slows down a bit.

Official retirement day (last day of work) is to be December 29th. This week the interviews for my position are going to be held. We're down to 46 working days, 67 calendar days. This afternoon I'll meet with the retirement systems about converting my retirement account into a pension. I already have one small pension I've done the paperwork for (former employer) that will kick in on December 1st. Medicare starts November 1st, and that small pension should just about cover the Medicare premiums for Parts B, D, and a supplement plan G. I won't start D and G until the first of the year, as I'm still covered by my employer's plan while I'm working. All these little details! The transition is all about details.

Speaking of all those little details, I encountered a retired friend at the race. She wasn't racing, she was out on her daily walk. I spotted her so went up and spoke. We hadn't seen one another in quite some time, and spent ten minutes pre-race catching up. And what did we talk about? All those retirement details, among other things!

Hope you're enjoying the autumn, it's certainly been beautiful here... all those bright yellows, oranges and reds! emoticon

Good Afternoon, Barb.

Rich continues to improve. He is having a hard time regaining his strength but he is getting there.

Not so great a streak with self-care behaviors?? Wow - that doesn't sound like you.

I have some miles to add to our challenge and will do that shortly.

So wonderful to hear that your Son's new job is going well. Did you tell me he worked for the VA? Joshua is doing well also - soon will celebrate a year's sobriety. Color this Mama not only happy but a little less stressed. He is still in Springfield and staying at a Veteran's Center and going to school. All in all, he is happy and sober and that is wonderful.

Hope you and the grand-dog do well. What kind of a dog is it?

When is the official date for your retirement.

I will let you know if I hear from Wilma and hopefully you will also.

Hugs Sunny

Sunday check in here!

Glad Rich is recovering, Sunny. Hope that he takes it as a "wake up call".

I hope Puerto Rico gets power and internet back soon. And I hope Wilma and her family are OK!

Here in my little world? Been on a not so great streak with self-care behaviors... need to get my mind back into an appropriate space! Son's new job is going well. He'll be out of town for training from Mid November to just before Christmas, which means I will need to play host to the grand-dog, since my daughter in law isn't a fan of the dog or vice-versa.

A purpose to distract me for a few weeks, while that retirement count-down keeps ticking!

So exciting...Congratulations, Sharon.

Rich is doing well. Forgot to tell Barb he had another heart attack on Monday. He absolutely refuses to exercise or do anything (even eat) healthy. I do think this was his "wake up" call and he is going to do differently now. I can only hope.

I have been thinking about Wilma too and did send her a message. I hope one of these days to hear from her. Things are still a huge mess there.

October is my favorite color so you know I am enjoying it.

Hugs to you both, Sunny

Yes, Sharon, I was both surprised and happy with how BB ended this season. It was AGONIZING to watch from about a third of the way in until the end, but very gratified to see the 180 that Josh pulled out of the bag to win. And for Cody to win "fan favorite" was not a surprise because I'd been watching the feed watchers who were so disgusted with Paul's control of most of the house... I think there was some chat-room collusion there!

Glad things are well in your world.

Edited to add, I was thinking about Wilma myself a LOT these past few weeks. Hope she's OK, but with most of the island still struggling to get power back I imagine getting back on line might take a while even if everything is fine. And that's the direction I'm heading in my prayers... that things improve down there and that Wilma and family be OK.

Hi Team, thought I'd better post and get subscribed!

Big news from Minnesota....I'm now a Grandma! Lisa and Ryan's baby boy arrived on Wednesday morning after a long struggle...but he's here now and perfect. Ryan has stayed in the hospital with Lisa the entire time (My, how times have changed since WE were delivering babies!) and the little family will most likely go home today. They named him Bradley, with two middle names after his two grandpas, Stephen and John. John of course is thrilled. Brad weighed in at 9 pounds 10 ounces and a whopping 22 and 1/4 inches. Takes after his momma, who likes to say she's 5'10 but is really just a hair under 6 feet tall.

Sunny, I'm happy to see you are improving. Tough recovery! How's Rich doing?

Barb, sounds like you are retiring first of the year? Well deserved my friend! BTW, we never got to fully dish on the BB season! I was happy with the outcome. How about you? Jeff also seems to have abandoned his education, having fallen into a well paying job that he likes and that has great benefits. He was only going for his Bachelors....enlisted after his sophomore year in college and planned to finish while on active duty....then afterward....but altogether has only picked up a few credits along the way. But like you said....his decision!

Is anyone in touch with Wilma via facebook or any other method? I've sure been thinking about her and her lovely Puerto Rico. I was only there for one day on a cruise ship port day, but what a beautiful island. I hope they get back on their feet soon. I've been to many of the islands who were hit by this season's hurricanes, and feel so sad for the destruction.

Anyway, on a happier note...enjoy this beautiful fall weather!

Woo-hoo for the head-start of those 22#'s Sunny.

I'm participating in blogging a return trip through Judith Beck's The Beck Diet Solution: Train your brain to think like a thin person. I'm already on Day 15 of that, and I'm hoping it will quench the rebellious streak I've had this year that began with last Winter's injury! I am NOT a good "patient" patient / recovery person, I learned. I'm ten pounds up from a year ago, and not happy... this trend CANNOT be allowed to continue, or in a brief 5 years I'd be up 50!

Meantime, I think I mentioned my son getting the job at the VA. We shall see what that does to his school motivation. He's still two years out from his MSW if he continues part time. But I know from experience how hard it is to have a job as challenging as school and of the same nature... that ditched my "continuing education" attempts at a masters when I was... yeah, about his age. Oh, well! Still, it's a good paying job, with a future, and if it holds his interest for enough years to retire from? Who am I to complain? His life, his choices, right?

The weather is turning cool here. Haven't had a hard freeze yet, but I saw frost on the deck earlier this week, and I pulled the fuzzy blankets out to put on the bed. Which reminds me that retirement is getting closer and closer. Today they posted the job opening for my position. It will remain posted for only a week, and the boss says he hopes to have it filled by November 1st... giving me an overlap of only 39 working days with my successor!

Hope everyone is well, and your service member kids are, too!
