Hi Everyone, it is nice to see that spark people has a area for thyroid disease. I have had it for years and I didn't know it until I had gastric bypass which was in 1999, I have done well on the weight loss although this last year I have had some hormonal issues as well as thyroid issues, I have gained some weight and it is scarring me. My question is there a diet to help boost the thyroid and do I need to go on lower calorie diet to lose the weight that I have gained which is about 20 pounds? if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Go to "Start" page, on the left side there is a link to "Weigh In and Measurements" you can record it all there. It will automatically change on everything else.

My endo and I talked about me taking selium on Friday. She said there are conflicting reports. Some say taking selium regulates glucose and others say it can cause diabetes.

If you do not eat a lot of things where you can put cinnamon on, you can take it in pill form. I do it daily and it does help curve the sugar cravings. On my holistic menopause group, there is a wonderful article about cinnamon and how it does so much for the body. If anyone wants a copy, please email me off the group and I will send you a copy.
I use Vitamin D in a cream form that is made up for me at the compounding pharmacy. It is used once a week and he changes the amounts for me each quarter based on my lab work.

hey Wolfie!

If you have adequet Selenium in your diet, it will help reduce your TPO antibodies. Selenium is used to created de-iodinases involved in the production of thyroid hormone.

The RDA is 55mcg. Check your multi and see if its in there before supplementing. Personally I take 100mcg, cuz I dont eat wheat (allergy)so potentially I'm not getting much in my diet.

You do not want to go overboard with this mineral. Too much... you're hair will drop, you'll develop garlic breath, and if those two aren't bad enuf, you'll also be at higher risk for diabetes.

Too much is never better, its always too much.

Professor!

Ya, its really annoying to have to wait for test, but you're lucky your doc is testing you and your insurance covers it. With D, they want to make sure you don't have Sarcodosis. That's another inflammatory autoimmune disease, where the body overproduces vitamin D3.

My experience has been that test results are generally in within a week, earlier if there's anything abnormal. "Low normal" vitamin D generally doesn't qualify. There's a good chance they'll be there on Monday if the office isn't closed for MLK day. I'd call then, rather than wait!

WinWin,
YUM! I love cinnamon too!

Hi. Brand new to spark people. Glad to see a thyroid group. I just read an article about vit D and was about to start supplements when my doctor suggested testing it. So I go in next tuesday for that. Frustrated because I was planning on starting it, and now have to wait! I am taking magnesium supplementation, but haven't started the calcium yet. Bad I know, but I will start tomorrow!
FYI cinnamon is very good for blood sugar!

this is all great info - I do take the D...not so much on the cal/mag...I eat tons of greens etc.

The cinnamon we sprinkle on steel cut oatmeal - I make in crock pot and put dried apricots it tastes good. actually, I prickle it on whatever I can because it seems to help my huge cravings for sugar.

Hi BSW!
I dont' know of any Spark resource list but there are plenty on the internet if you put "(whatever you want, ex: Zinc) food sources" in your search engine.

Here's an example:

www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=zinc+f
oo
d+sources&aq=0&oq=Zinc+food+

Most multivitamins will provide you will all or some of your RDA for Zinc. So if you are taking a multi, check there first.

Calcium, on the other hand, you have to get from foods and/or supplements. The problem with calcium supplements, is that some of them, ie calcium carbonate, tend to constipate as well as act as an anti-acid in the stomach (its in Tums) which can cause malabsorption problems for some of us with already low stomach acid. Most peeps over 50 have decreased levels of stomach acid and it gets progressively worse with age, with Hypothyroid disease, the likelihood of lo stomach acid increases.

So my reccommendation there would be calcium citrate. Its more expensive, but it doesn't have the side effects of calcium carbonate. If you can get it with Magnesium citrate, your pipes will run clean and clear and you'll provide your body with calcium against osteoporosis.

Magnesium is a cofactor of calcium, it helps get it out of soft tissues so kidney stones and bone spurs don't develop. The citrate form of Mag also has a laxative effect, as magnesium helps your body to relax. That's why Epson salt baths are such a blessing for tired achey muscles... the magnesium is absorbed transdermally.

Note: Your body can only absorb 500 -600 calcium per dose. You need to leave a minimum of 2 hours between doses. And keep it away from iron, as they will bind each other and travel out of your body hand in hand la dee da completely shirking their duties in your body! LOL

One tip is to leave your calcium in your car, with your water bottle. Or carry them in your purse. If you can get it in combination with vitamin D or Magnesium, so much more the better. Just make sure if you are getting it with D, and taking a multi too, that you do not go over 1000 IUs of D.

Lo fat cottage cheese is a great source of both calcium AND protein... a half cup of 2% cotty is 90 calories and provides 8% of your daily calcium and 14gs of protein. It can be put in a blender and made into a YUM sourcream substitue or used as a base for a smoothie. I blend it with a piece of ginger root, 3 tablespoons of fish oil, Xylitol and blueberries, stir in 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed, and eat is like a pudding for lunch.

Try to get a cotty with only milk, cream and cultures. READ THE LABEL! Its appalling the junk they add in there these days.

Okay, I think that pretty covers it except for the reminder that you need to keep ALL MINERALS... that would be iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium, ALL VITAMINS, ALL SUPPLEMENTS and ALL MEDICATIONS away from your morning dose of Levothyroxine by 4 hours...and wait at least an hour before eating. Make sure when you do eat, that your cereal doesn't have your MDR of iron in it, okay? LOL

What can you do to maximize your absorption of your thyroid meds?

Take it with a HUGE glass of water!

Okay, peeps... lets have fun today... keep on keepin on!

I am a new person, so forgive me if this has been discussed a lot.

But what if, you discover you are low in zinc, or calcium, magnesium, or some other mineral, or vitamin;
Does spark have a list of foods highest in zinc, or highest in Calcium?

So that when you see you are low in Zinc, you can go to the list, and choose some foods to add to your diet?

Zinc needs to be balanced with copper, too much of any one nutrient is never a good thing! This is the downside of one nutrient supplementation.

Most multivitamins have the correct ratio of copper to zinc and they're getting better at putting a bioavailable from of copper in the mix. In the past the form many of them used was not readily absorbed.

Not sure if any of you have been using one of the copper peptide skin lotions that have made their entry into the skinceuticals market in recent years, but copper's inclusion in these products does indicate that its an essential nutrient in skin health, repair and collagen formation.

If you are tracking your zinc try to stay around the numbers recommended by Spark. Better yet, get it from your foods!

Mifflin is correct about the Vit-D. I deliver mail and i'm in my car between 3 to 5 hours and I still have a bad deficiency of this Vitamin. My legs was hurting really bad and allot of bruising to them. But allot of people never have any symptoms the Dr said. I just have other health problems. Vivian

It might also be a good idea to track Vitamin D. Recent studies are recommending much higher amounts, and with indoor jobs for most people, and sunscreens when we are outside, a supplement is usually in order.

Good tip, Bonna!
Magnesium is helpful for a wide range of things in addition to calcium absorption, its part of over 300 enzymes in our body and lacking in our soils.

If you supplement, magnesium citrate has a higher bio-availability than the more common Magnesium Oxide, and also helps "move things along" the GI track. "Lack of movement" being one of the issues for many hypothyroid peeps!

hey 3Ls!

thanks for the update. I originally posted this "how to" link early in this year, its possibleo Spark may have updated/changed things since then.

Thanks for posting about the iron.
Its NOT off topic!
This is a good place for people to post about the benefits of specific nutrients. Just not to have prolonged conversations of a personal nature.

: )

Iron's something that needs to be taken far from your thyroid meds. Personally I take my multi (my iron source)as far apart from my thyroid meds as possible. At a minimum 5 hours in either direction. Same with calcium and all other supplements, minerals, meds.

Hi Mzzchief. Thank you for posting this! I really appreciate it! I wanted to point out though that I had to modify your step 2
(2.On START page there are 3 columns, Orange, Blue and Green. You want the Orange MY TOOLS column onthe left.

Scroll down, Find "My Spark Diet" under which is "My Goals". You should have 3 goals listed.

Select "change" in the one that has your daily caloric range. )

Under MY TOOLS pick MY NUTRITION then CHANGE NUTRITION GOALS. Don't know.....maybe it is just me, but wanted to point it out.

Also, hope this isn't too off topic......I wanted to share with you all that I have always been told NOT to take my Synthroid 2 hours before or 2 hours after IRON . I wanted to make anyone who didn't know that aware. I had a friend who recently developed thyroid disease and her doctor didn't tell her that....but once I mentioned it to her she asked her doc and he said....Oh Yes that is true.

TTFN

I really like this tracker! I'm able to see what I'm doing well and what I can improve. Right now, I know I need to lower my sodium, thanks to this tracker.

Great Ladies!

Don't forget to load magnesium ,calcium and fiber into your tracker. We generally don't get enuf of these 3 in our diets.

you also have a button at the top of your meal tracking page to make your changes. I added my vit under the "make your own group" option as I take a lot of odd things and I wanted to be sure I am not going over recommended limits

hey!

I'm reposting this "how to" tool, please limit responses to information and links on the various health benefits of the nutrients that can be tracked on the Spark tracker. Its so easy to get off topic.

This is not to discourage Sparkers from posting! If you want to talk about something else, then by all means, open a new thread! This way we can preserve the original intent of THIS thread, which is information oriented.

Thx.

*****

There is a great tool here on Spark Pages that I'm not sure everyone is aware of, cuz its a little tricky to find.

Its the Track It tool. Along with Sparkpages assessing your daily protein, fat and carb intake, you can also program it to track things like fiber, minerals, and vitamins, automatically! but you have to do a little work first, and sign up.

I am suggesting this, cuz I have said stuff before like: O I eat plenty of salads and get lots of fiber, and drink lots of milk, so I really don't need this. Man I was WRONG!

: )

Interested?

Then here's how to add additional tracking info:

1.Go to your START page. How do you get there?
The START page is the first selection from the drop down menu in MY TOOLS on the horizontal orange toolbar.

2.On START page there are 3 columns, Orange, Blue and Green. You want the Orange MY TOOLS column onthe left.

Scroll down, Find "My Spark Diet" under which is "My Goals". You should have 3 goals listed.

Select "change" in the one that has your daily caloric range.

3.You'll redirected to the EDIT NUTRITIONAL GOALS page. There is a button, near the bottom of the page, that says: "Add another Nutrient."

Selecting button this will open up a menu of options. You'll find the Fiber tracker, minerals and vitamins listed. I dont' bother with vitamins, as I take a multi that covers my MDR. But you might want to track something in particular... go for it!

4. Be sure to add your Multi or Minerals to your "favorites" list. You may need to create a profile for your pill,if its not listed in the Sparkpages "add foods" Menu... which is simple to do. That way, when you take them, you can easily add them off your favorites list.

I hope more people will take advantage of this great feature that Sparkpages has made available to us!
