I agree w/your comment re: Ronaldo...As awesome as he is, he can't do it all!! Was glad to see City's result as well.

Wow, would not have taken bets that Real Madrid and Man City would both go down the same day. RM seems to be relying way too much on Ronaldo. The game plan appears to be - run down the field and cross it to him as quickly as possible...then watch. The poor guy can't completely carry that team

Here's the funny thing - not RVP, not Kagawa, not Nani - of all people, Michael Carrick! It was a weird goal but he deserved it just for persistance alone. I think it was his first UCL goal ever.

The biggest issue I saw was inability to hold the ball in the midfield

As good as the RM/MC game was, the MU/Galat game was NOT. Talk about a yawner! I'm happy with result, but definitely not with the way MU played - it was painful. The Chel/Juv game was fun - Oscar looks an 18 yr old, but he was fun to watch - his 2nd goal was a beauty! Don't think i saw any major upsets this week - next set of games right around the corner.

Sir Alex has some work to do before that game!

Fantastic game! RM dominated the game in terms of possession, shots on goal and corners, but they still had to come from behind twice to win. RM's defense in suspect. They need to gel and get organized back there, especially in the center. Ozil should be starting. Essien is good, but Ozil is awesome! DiMaria was everywhere, he had a great game! Marcelo was brilliant.

Unbelievable game yesterday between MC and RM!!! Goals came late, but when they did - man did they come fast and hard. Love seeing Mourino's passion after CR's goal. I despise City with every ounce of blood in my body, but I do have a soft spot for Joe Hart and actually felt a little bad for him (but no one else). Hoping my lads won't overlook teams again this year and get totally embarrassed like last year. Already have the DVR set

Chelsea is the luckiest team i've ever seen this year! But at the end of the day, they are the UCL champions - can't take that away from them. Sometimes you make your own luck and sometimes it's handed to you. Regardless of the luck factor, they stood with the trophy at the end of an improbable ride - so congrats to the the Blues, their coaches, their fans!

Bayern Munich had their opportunities - the three factors i saw that led to their demise were 1. Gomez couldn't hit the broad side of a barn yesterday - unbelievably bad shank after shank
2. Robben's missed penalty - or PC's amazing save - however you want to look at it
3. My heart broke for my favorite German player, Schweinsteiger, from being the hero against RM now the guy who will be remembered for that weird stagger step that ended up in a missed penalty shot on home turf that gave Chelsea the win

Ouch

As much as I thought I really wanted to see another Barcelona/Real Madrid match up in the final, I have to say that I'm really looking forward to see Chelsea/Bayern Munich go at it - kind of fresh to have the two underdogs in the fight. I saw online that there is a push to "forgive" the yellow card carriers who are ineligible for the final due to accumulated cards. Each team has three players ineligible. I'll be shocked if the soccer gods will agree to that, but i don't necessarily disagree. I totally back the red card ineligibilty, but can be swayed on the yellows. Anyhow, the final should be great and of course, have to root for BM now.

I really got a kick out of seeing my favorite German, Bastian Schweinsteiger, get the game winner. I love saying that guy's name! And PS... the goalie from BM has got to be the number one hero in Germany today! Wow, stopping both Ronaldo and Kaka - impressive

And there it is...I should have bet money that Chelsea and Bayern would be in the final. This is why I love this game. Anything can happen. I thought for sure that Real Madrid was on their way to a rout when they were up by 2 in the first 30 minutes. Then Bayern just started dominating the rest of the game.

I will be rooting for Bayern in the finals!!!

WOW!!! I can't believe that game. I've watched it twice. It was a really exciting game. I really don't like Chelsea, but they clawed their way through that game so I have to give them the thumbs up. The goal by Ramires was a thing of beauty. Perfect chip. Torres finally earned his money. Straight red card to Terry. Cahill hurt. Messi misses from the penalty spot. That game had a little bit of everything! The soccer gods were smiling on Chelsea yesterday. Will they be able to do it again with a big chunk of their team unable to play in the final???

If Bayern makes it through today, it would be the most unexpected final ever.

Very surprised! As much as I despise Chelsea, I do have to say that Torres' goal was a thing of beauty - I love the slow motion replays, his concentration level as he juked the goalie was cool to see. I wouldn't have placed bets on that outcome, for sure!

Who knows, maybe Bayern Munich can pull off another major upset in this tournament!

There's no way Chelsea holds it together at Camp Nou. I love watching Barca play, which is blasphemous for me to say since I am a big fan of Real Madrid. Mesut Ozil is one of my favorite players. There's just something about watching Barca play that is like watching art that makes it impossible for me to hate them.

I see Chelsea getting beat in the second leg. Possibly a 3-1 scoreline. I like Bayern Munich, but I think everybody is looking for El Classico. I don't think watching Barca beat up on Bayern will be nearly as much fun.

Wow, classic cases of teams looking ahead to El Classico this weekend! Both Barcelona and Real Madrid should be embarrassed! Hopefully we'll see which ever team loses on Saturday come back and beat the other in the UCL final. As much as I really like Bayern Munich (and my favorite German Bastian Schweinsteiger), I really don't want to see a BM/CH final. Goes without saying that I DEFINITELY don't want to see the blues there! Good for both teams though in their upsets - couldn't believe the chances BAR had at the end of the game - especially the one hitting the post that was a gorgeous shot!

I don't know if it's me, but has there been a change in how the last 16 games are being played. I could have swore that their wasn't no 3 week gap between them and that they used to be played back to back...meaning tuesday team a and b play, and then next wednesday they meet again.

I'd say so - wish they had been a bit more in it. I think Henry is supposed to leave to come back to the US today, so he won't be an extra spark for them anymore this year. Wenger just isn't showing passion like he used to - looks tired and i think it's being reflected by the team. Do have to say RVP had some great moments!

I'm rooting for Real Madrid, Arsenal and Bayern Munich. I like their attacking style of play. I'm a little tired of seeing Barca win everything. It great that we can watch these games on TV now. When I was was kid, the only international soccer on TV was the World Cup...

Must admit i was impressed with Napolis preformance against Villareal....i was totally not expecting that, but they played well.

I knew Bayern Munich was going to be too good for City...as for Teves, his attitude stinks. I can't believe he would refuse to go on...Had he done that while at United he was have got the hairdyer/boot at the back of hid neck. I love Teves as a striker too....and last but not least United =/ I don't know what happened, but i'm still confident we will progress

Okay Maggie ... I read this :-)

Schalke looked pitiful. It was like watching a totally different team than the one that booted Inter out of the competition. The best thing to come out of it was Neuer's performance - he would be a great acquisition for Sir Alex if he can get him. I watched on Sky Sports where Peter Schmeichel called Neuer the best in the game right now. That's a pretty weighty opinion to ignore.

Real v Barca ... y'know ... I'm not a real big Mourinho fan (the guy is just a tad arrogant), but I'm even less of a Platini / Blatter (UEFA / FIFA) administration fan. I would not be at all surprised if there was some backroom "suggestions" made as to how the match should play out - or at least be called by the referee. Pepe's tackle was not all that bad and he should not have been given a straight red. And what happened to the Respect campaign? If I was calling the match and I had an entire Barca team surround me yelling for me to card Pepe, I'd probably be scared to death and give the red card too. On the other hand, being played at the Bernabeu, one would have thought that Real would be given a little leeway.

Anyway, I think the powers that be were looking for Barca to make it to the finals. What with both ManU and Barca up 2-0 on aggregate (and with away goals no less), looks like it will be ManU v Barca at Wembley.

Unless Schalke somehow wakes up and performs at Old Trafford the way they did at the San Siro. But somehow I doubt it - OT is practically an impenetrable fortress for United this year.

I hope someone reads this....this team is too quiet

So after the first leg of the semi's man utd and barca have the upper hands.

I was real surprised at the schalke's preformance. I was expecting more attacking from them. United could have been 4 up by half time, but Nueer made some great saves. As a Utd fan i'm pretty satisfied, but we still have the second leg.

Now as for the real v barca game...Messi is just breathtaking, but the game as a whole was full of dives, fouls and bad decisions. Why is it someone always gets sent off playing against madrid??

Looks like a repeat of the 09 final (i'm confident united will go through), as for the other game...no clue, but i can bet someone will get sent off

The Real v Barca game is going to be one of those game. Barcelona have a great record against real madrid and Jose, but i really want madrid to win so they can face united in the final

Didn't know that Kusczak was leaving. I actually kinda liked him. Fergie did sign a keeper from Poland (I think, or perhaps Denmark because they were comparing him to Schmeichel) and he featured in one match, injured his knee, and underwent surgery. But he's supposed to be young, huge (height and wingspan), and destined to be Poland (or Denmark) National Team keeper for years to come.

As for Owen, I agree - I think he's simply a "marquis" name whose glory days are well past him. I'd say they need him in case the strikers / forwards get injured, but that hasn't been the team's problem. They can certainly use more backs. The day that both Fabio and Rafael both were injured (forgot what game it was) was just freaky weird.

Anyway ... I'm sure Fergie won't make the same keeper mistake he did when he brought in Barthez - who was more circus clown than great keeper. ANd they, geez, there was Howard (who is great, but never really fit in at United), and ugh Carroll, who had more gaffes than saves. I'm still amazed he was a national team keeper (I want to say for Ireland, but I could be wrong there - I forgot where he hails from). We'll be fine. As for Van Der Sar ... as a parent, I can understand wanting to spend time with his family before all the time goes by. On the other hand, he's probably been in as good form these days as he's ever been. Amazing keeper.

So true. The player i never quite liked was O'Shea...yeah i know he has scored a few vital goals..will never forget the goal he scored against arsenal when we beat them 4-2 at their old stadium, but i'm really edgy when he plays.

And i seriously don't know why Fergie is keeping Owen....that just baffles me emoticon
Also i'm kinda upset Van Der Sar is retiring. My only regret was they didn't sign him earlier and his immense talent was stuck playing at Fulham. I have no idea who Fergie will turn to cause Kuzchek (totally spelt his name wrong) is leaving. He announced it a few days ago, but i never felt secure with him anyway

I'm pretty confident that they'll do it. Watching today's match against Fulham, it just underlines that no matter who they put on the field, they are an awesomely cohesive unit. The only weak link in their entire squad (in my humble opinion) is Wes Brown. He may have been qute the back in his prime, but since the early 2000s, it seems whenever he plays, he either loses the player he's marking, gives the ball away, or just has a howler moment that costs United the game. First time I saw him live was Unived v AC Milan (or possibly AS Roma) in one their US tours in the early/mid 2000s. United up by 1 and in 2nd half extra-time, Brown gains possession in *his own* 18-yard box and tried dribbling to the corner flag to kill time. Slips, falls, gives up the ball to the opposing forward who then goes in and scores. Final whistle then blew. Ughh. As long as United have enough healthy backs that they don't need to bring Brown in, I think they'll do fine in the 2nd leg.

I'm happy with it too because that easily could have been an equaliser.

I'm hoping they can do it. They are playing great so i think they'll take their terrific form into tuesday nights game. On the other hand Chelsea are busy blabbing their mouths about how the whole world hates them an what not.

It would to take something SPECTACULAR from Tottenham, Inter and Shaktar to come away with victorys

It was a great game. And even as a United fanatic, I have to say the referee missed the penalty on Ramirez in extra time. But hey, FIFA doesn't want any sort of technology to help the game, so ... I'm happy with the missed call.

Sad that Barca, Real Madrid, and Schalke walked all over their opponents this week. It's going to make for a pretty boring 2nd leg. The only tie that has any chance of swinging either way is the United-Chelsea game. Which of course, at Old Trafford, I'm fully expecting United to come away with at least a draw.

That sucks. I was wondering why they weren't showing them. When i was in highschool i remember running home to catch the games at 2:30.

So um i think it's safe to say that Real Madrid have one foot into the semi finals right??
And as for the Inter game...i'm not even shocked by the score line... Italian football is just not what it used to be.

So this is random, but while writing this i thought about Pavel Nedved...what ever happened to him?? Anyone know?

Nope ... Rupert Murdoch and Fox have the exclusive rights to the CL games televised in the US this year. No espn.

So i know this is a champions league thread, but my God their preformance against West Ham was just epic. That's how champions play. I saw that they were playing in Jersey and i got so excited because i live in Jersey. I would love to go, the cheapest tickets are 135 and i'm going to do my best to be there!!!

Do you know if they are showing any of the CL games on tuesday and wednesday on espn??

Agreed. I'm a bit concerned that the Chelsea/ManU tie might also be the toughest for ManU to get through. On recent form, even with ManU's defeats, I think their mental strength is much higher than Chelsea's (this past weeks fixtures and results against West Ham and Stoke being proof). But Chelsea has really nothing else to play for this year, and Ancelloti's future with the club is, I think, wholly tied to the team's results in the CL. And, not to take sides with Sir Alex regarding officiating (what with the "Respect" campaign and all, but some referrees, like Atkinson, I truly believe have a negative bias against ManU. In any event, if United can come away with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, I think they're in great shape.

As for Spurs ... when it comes to football, I have fan appreciation like I do for baseball: first and foremost, I want the NY Mets to win. If they don't, then anyone else other than the Yankees must win. That said, in the Premiership, ManU are the Mets and Chelsea the Yankees. I happen to love the way Spurs are playing these days - and I would love to see an all-English final at Wembley. Of course there still will be Barcelona to deal with on that side of the draw, but I'll worry about Barca v Tottenham if that actually comes to be.

In the meantime, as a complete aside, with the news that United was making a 2011 summer tour in the States, I looked at their schedule. They play the MLS All-Stars in New Jersey, and they play Barca in Washington D.C. As a United fan in good standing, I'll be able to buy tickets for the Barca match through manutd.com. But to see them play in NJ (which is near where I live), the stadium only seats 25,000 and priority goes to Red Bull season-ticket holders. So, I just bought season-tickets for the NY Red Bull primarily so I'll be able to purchase tickets to the ManU v MLS All-Stars game.

I'm one of those who puts the "fanatic" in "fan" :-)

Out of all the quater final line ups, the most mouth watering ones will be chelsea v united and tottenham v real madrid. As a united fan i want man u to win, but i know chelsea will give us a good game. They're still sour about losing to us in the finals and thet're going to want to prove something.

Real Madrid are coming out of a loss in La Liga, so they're going to want to prove something, but Tottenham are proving that they are a good team. Barcelona is just epic, and inter milan v schalke...i just don't have no idea.

In a pefect world for me, the final would be man utd v real madrid. I'd LOVE to see Cristiano play against his old club

I'm following the games religiously (can't wait to slip out of work early so I can catch the Barca/Arsenal match live.

As for who will be in the final? I'd love to see 2 English (with the exception of Chelsea) teams square off against each other at Wembley, but as long as ManU is one of the finalists. Two weeks ago I'd have said Barca for sure, but with the surprise defeat at the Emirates, I think Arsenal will hold off the pressure at Nou Camp and move on.
