I've been taking a kickboxing class and a bellydance class. I can't speak for other kickboxing classes, but my teacher is more interested in how you progress compared to YOURSELF than how you're doing compared to others in the class.

I've taken a few bellydance classes before and it seems like they're always very supportive/woman-centric environments. One teacher said it's better to bellydance if you ARE overweight since it's "supposed to shake!" The same teacher told us about a very good professional dancer who was told to gain about 20 pounds. Bellydance class is one of the very few places where I'm comfortable showing off my tummy.

I got called out once during the class which embarrassed me, but she didn't do it in an embarrassing way. We did a lower ab strengthening thing where you lay on your back with your hands on the floor at your sides, put your legs straight up in the air, and then, without using your arms or hands, lift your bum off the ground.

Ok, I tried and I didn't even get 1 mm off the ground and I felt stupid and weak so I wanted to just give that one up. She was like "if you don't practice you'll never get it" telling the WHOLE class despite the fact that I personally knew she was speaking to me. While you were doing this thing though you couldn't exactly look around so no one knew that I had given up.

If she had come over to me, stared at me, and called me out so everyone knew I probably would have never gone back.

I was also appreciative of the fact that she had ways to make it more or less advanced - use a mat or use a ball, sometimes add in weights.

This morning my abs are KILLING. Every time I laugh it's agony. Seriously you never realize how much you use your abs until they hurt.

What did you think of pilates? Can you tell me what the exercises are like or offer any advice?

I also want to try a spin class.

i used to take an awesome pilates class at my gym, but it meant staying at school really late and not getting home until 8:30, so I gave it up. what made it awesome was the instructor. she's a really clever, quick woman in addition to being a good instructor, so she'd crack really witty jokes all hour long. it was great! i find that the instructor really matters for me. i also used to take a step-aerobics class before that pilates class, and i quit that because the instructor was a mirthless bitch who never did her own moves and had beginners rely on one or two demonstrations to get a whole routine.

So today I went to go to the pilates class that my gym offers. It was going to be my first ever pilates and I was kind of nervous. I asked at the desk whether I would be ok and they told me that while yes, I would be ok, that the class was cancelled because the instructor was away. Instead they were running rock hard abs and bottoms. So I signed up.

Ok, that class kicked my flabby abs and bottom! I did about (by my estimation) 800000 crunches of all different styles. There were also lunges and squats and all kinds of crazy shiz. It was... great! It totally targeted my problem areas (ie: my abs and bottom, haha [bottom includes thighs]). The instructor was pushy, but that just kept me going where I can guarentee you I would have otherwise given up. The hour seriously flew by and I will be taking that class again.

So... anyone else have classes they take? What are they like?
